And here we go again...

Aretha & George - I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me) 2 - on paper it should've worked, but a weak song destroys it...
Beastie Boys - Fight For Your Right 4 - fine slab of 'punk-rap'...
Mel & Kim - Respectable 1 - horrid, plastic piece of dance fluff...
Terence Trent D'Arby - If You Let Me Stay 4 - a very good pop-soul attempt, his pipes going ten to the dozen on it...
Club Nouveau - Lean On Me 1 - sucked all the life out of a great song...
U2 - With Or Without You 2 - typical U2 fare...all gee-tar and impassioned vocals...heard one, heard 'em all...
Madonna - La Isla Bonita 3 - a change of style with the flamenco-type guitar...doesn't mask the fact that it's a average song...
Starship - Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now 2 - big, overblown power-ballad affair...group had become something of a joke with this...
Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody 1 - ...and the bland played on...
Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over 4 - fine song with McCartney-esque overtones...has become something of a modern-day 'standard'...
Firm - Star Trekkin' 1 - was funny for about 20 seconds...
Heart - Alone 4 - fine power-ballad...
Hue & Cry - Labour Of Love 4 - one you don't hear too much of these days...good, funky-ish tune which they couldn't quite follow-up...
Pet Shop Boys - It's A Sin 3 - overblown and over-produced...attracted some controversy with its melody, which is almost the same as Cat Stevens' 'Wild World'...
Bananarama - Love In The First Degree 3 - fairly basic but catchy pop-dance fodder...heh! Relax CF! This isn't the Alabama song...
Madonna - Who's That Girl 2 - Madge in a bit of a rut...fairly ho-hum...
New Order - True Faith 2 - never really appealed...began to lose their edge a bit...
Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up 4 - defining '80's song, which could've been worse but somehow wasn't...
T'Pau - Heart & Soul 2 - bit heavy-going and not very memorable...
Black - Wonderful Life 2 - a song that I've inadvertantly heard more times than I need to...sleep-inducing...
Whitney Houston - Didn't We Almost Have It All 1 - another piece of Whitney-by-numbers...
MARRS - Pump Up The Volume 3 - where sampling really came into its own...largely groundbreaking at the time, now it sounds truly dated...
Bee Gees - You Win Again 2 - would've been a fairly good song if not for the clumsy beat in it...
Fleetwood Mac - Little Lies 3 - sub-standard attempt from the Mac...have done infintely better...
Michael Jackson - Bad 2 - all sequencers, samples and yowling...he'd really began to sink from here...
Billy Idol - Mony Mony 3 - competent-enough cover, but adds nothing to TJ's original...
George Michael - Faith 3 - about the best thing he done solowise...
T'Pau - China In Your Hand 3 - slightly more bearable than the last, but slips into overblown mode alarmingly quickly...
Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes - Time Of My Life 4 - good performance from both, if a touch over-exposed...
Michael Jackson - The Way You Make Me Feel 2 - 'cutesy' song which had quite a few of us shaking our heads...
Pogues & Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York 5 - Shane's voice grates me almost every time, apart from this one song where it just seems to work...lyrics are sheer poetry...
Belinda Carlisle - Heaven Is A Place On Earth 3 - fair effort, but she's done better...
Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind 2 - seemed like a good idea at the time, but is really nothing extraordinary...

It's 1987. It's . . . Another song rating session!  ;D

'I knew you were waiting' - Aretha Franklin/George Michael
I love this song. Strong and powerful - 4
'Fight for your right to party' - Beastie Boys
Nothing special . . . - 2
'Respectable' - Mel and Kim
This is plastic pop . . . but I love it - 4
'If you let me stay' - Terence Trent D'Arby
Great song by a bloke you rarely see these days - 4
'Lean on me' - Club Nouveau
I love the synthesizer to this song - 4
'With or without you - U2'
A bit of a bore really - 1
'La Isla Bonita' - Madonna
Allright - 3
'Nothing's gonna stop us now' - Starship
A wonderful power ballad that deserved better than being a soundtrack for the film 'Mannequin'
'I wanna dance with somebody' - Whitney Houston
This is great stuff. The blippy beat is great - 4
'Don't dream it's over' - Crowded House
O.K I don't have much of an opinion on it - 2
'Star Trekkin' - The Firm
Quite an oddity. The video was good. - 3
'Alone' - Heart
In the year of the power ballad, this song fits in well - 3
'Labour of love' - Hue and Cry
This was something different. Wonderful stuff from the Scottish lads - Looking for Linda was a great song as well - 5
'It's a sin' - Pet Shop Boys
It's allright. A little bit too 'oomphy' - 3
'Love in the first degree' - Bananarama
From S/A/Ws Hit Factory, for me this is the 'Ramas best song - 4
'Who's that girl?' - Madonna
I keep confusing this with Eurythmics song of the same title, therefore can't be that memorable - 2
'True Faith' - New Order
Nice if a little plodding - 3
'Never gonna give you up' - Rick Astley
I love this song! This is the best song of 1987. That man from Newton-Le-Willows knew how to sing a song - 5
'Heart and soul' - T'Pau
Not really bothered about it . . . 2
'Wonderful life' - Black
Touching song with a haunting melody. I think it was a chocolate advert at one point - 3
'Didn't we almost have it all' - Whitney Houston
BORING! - 1
'Pump up the volume' - M/A/R/R/S
A collection of DJs came together to score an original (for it's time) number one hit - 3
'You win again' - Bee Gees
One of their best. - 4
'Little Lies' - Fleetwood Mac
One of the first I heard of Fleetwood Macs. I think it scores a little more because Stevie Nicks is not singing it - 3
'Bad' - Michael Jackson
This started off the confusion of the English Language. Everybody said they were 'bad' when they meant 'good' - 2
'Mony Mony' - Billy Idol
It's a safe cover but I prefer Tommy James and The Shondells version - 3
'Faith' - George Michael
I used to hate this song. I can live with it now - 3
'China in your hand' - T'Pau
A power ballad that could have been excellent, I consider it good - 3
'I had the time of my life' - Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes
A cracking soundtrack to the 'Dirty Dancing' film - 4
'The way you made me feel' - Michael Jackson
I like this bouncy tune. Catchy - 3
'Fairytale of New York' - Pogues feat. Kirsty MacColl
This is a great Christmas song by the bloke that sounds like Bob Geldoff - 4
'Heaven is a place on Earth' - Bellinda Carlisle
A powerful song by the wobbly voiced girl from The Go-Gos - 3
'Always on my mind' - Pet Shop Boys
Ah! This is a classic! This is the only version I will listen to and love. Dramatic production - 5

Could we rate 'La Bamba' by Los Lobos as well? I'll give that a 4.
