'89...almost there...!

Fine Young Cannibals - She Drives Me Crazy 3 - good song for its time, but hasn't aged that well...
Marc Almond & Gene Pitney - Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart 3 - typically melodramatic Almond performance with the unmistakable tones of Pitney thrown in...sadly, song's not that great...even Pitney's original (1967) wasn't...
Mike & The Mechanics - The Living Years 3 - rousing sentimentality all over it, if a bit sickly...co-written by long-forgotten past UK hitmaker, B A Robertson...
Bangles - Eternal Flame 3 - like FYC, good at the time, but a tad tiresome now...
Michael Jackson 2 - or, how to screw the public big time...this was only available on CD issues of 'Bad' which, after a lot of people had bought it for this track, was suddenly released as a single! Still mediocre...
Paula Abdul - Straight Up 2 - somewhat corny piece of dance-pop...
Jason Donovan - Too Many Broken Hearts 3 - Teen scream of 1989, and another Aussie soap star! More SAW disposable pop, enjoyable enough...
Madonna - Like A Prayer 4 - after some lacklustre releases, Madge got back on form for a while with this...good gospel-ish refrain near the end...
Transvision Vamp - Baby I Don't Care 4 - what on earth happened to this lot? An absolute racket, which somehow seems to work...!
Simply Red - If You Don't Know Me By Now 1 - on the evidence of this, Mr Hucknall, sometimes I wish I didn't...!
Cyndi Lauper - I Drove All Night 2 - not as enjoyable as some of her stuff...weak song...
Neneh Cherry - Manchild 3 - shuffling 'trip-hop' affair, which I normally wouldn't like, but has a fine melody attached...loses points for that unneccessary 'rap' near the end...
Beautiful South - Song For Whoever 3 - listenable, but tends to meander into nothingness...
Madonna - Express Yourself 2 - just as it was picking up, Madge lets her guard down again with this piece of forgettable dance pap...
Soul II Soul - Back To Life 2 - couldn't really see the attraction of this group...slow and lazy dance stuff...sloppy...
Sonia - You'll Never Stop Me Loving You 2 - yet another SAW poppet with a cutesy tune which, presumably, Kylie wouldn't touch with a bargepole...!
Alice Cooper - Poison 2 - back comes Vince with a rousing number which sadly doesn't really go anywhere...
Kylie Minogue - Wouldn't Change A Thing 3 - okay...but weren't they all starting to sound the same by now...?
Black Box - Ride On Time 2 - the first Italian act to top the British chart, this was the work of a couple of Italian DJ's, who sampled Loleatta Holloway's 'Love Reaction' to within an inch of its life...bit of a yawn though...
Cher - If I Could Turn Back Time 3 - several visits to the plastic surgeon later, Cher returned with this ho-hum affair...
Richard Marx - Right Here Waiting 4 - very pretty uncluttered ballad from the man more akin to power ballads and rockers...nice enough...
Billy Joel - We Didn't Start The Fire 4 - the chorus refrain is one of his weakest, but there's no denying the man credit for an extremely clever piece of lyric work...
Milli Vanilli - Girl I'm Gonna Miss You 1 - I bet the Girl's heartbroken...! Pap!
Belinda Carlisle - Leave A Light On 3 - bearable rouser, can get a bit ho-hum here and there...
Kaoma - Lambada 4 - Ah! The dance craze of '89 where complete strangers would suddenly press themselves up against you seductively for no apparent reason...I did keep telling the gentlemen I wasn't interested, but...!
Phil Collins - Another Day In Paradise 3 - typical Phil ballad with a thinly-disguised bit of social commentary thrown in...did grate after a few listens...
Lisa Stansfield - All Around The World 3 - a song that I would have liked more, but it just sounds too 'safe' for its own good...
New Kids On The Block - You Got It (The Right Stuff) 3 - yep! With a little bit of hype, we eventually got it all right...! Probably about the most bearable thing they came up with...
Linda & Aaron - Don't Know Much 3 - fine singers both, but this song doesn't do 'em credit...
Stone Roses - Fool's Gold 2 - the shape of things to come, when Indie music made its presence felt on the dancefloor...it was time for me to call it a day...!
De La Soul - The Magic Number 3 - odd rap trio with a flair for odd samples...don't hear this much now...

And that, folks, is that...!
I won't be going beyond '89, as the music of the '90's held little appeal for me...a bit out of my league, methinks...! But I'll keep having a gander at 'em from time to time...
It's been a real ball looking back over them last 11 years...hope some of my comments made some sense to you...! (Well, some of you, at least!)
Criz - thanks again...!

I loved the music of 1989 . . .

Fine Young Cannibals - She Drives Me Crazy
Roland Gift's voice almost made this song unbearable to listen to (like biting into an ice lolly and juddering). The chords couldn't make me hate it - 4
Marc Almond/Gene Pitney - Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart
Odd colloboration here but I think seemed to work well. The video was poor though (based in a fair) - 3
Mike & Mechanics - The Living Years
Too slushy and not risible, therefore don't like this song - 2
Bangles - Eternal Flame
Bangles did this song better than Atomic Kitten - 3
Michael Jackson - Leave Me Alone
Song was rubbish, video was great - 2
Paula Abdul - Straight Up
Strong electronic beat grabbed me - 3
Jason Donovan - Too Many Broken Hearts
Love this slice of S/A/W. In the video, Jason walks along a piece of landscape playing his electric guitar - with no amplifier in sight guffaw! 4
Madonna - Like A Prayer
Controversial video couldn't disguise this rousing track - 4
Transvision Vamp - Baby I Don't Care
Wendy James revving it up with a classic piece of rock - 4
Simply Red - If You Don't Know Me By Now
Harold Melvin and The Bluenote's version bored me to tears. There was no way this was going to fair better - 1
Cyndi Lauper - I Drove All Night
Was this Roy Orbison's song? A poor version - 2
Neneh Cherry - Manchild
Sophorific rubbish - 2
Beautiful South - Song For Whoever
Lovely song! Anybody know how the chorus goes? 4
Madonna - Express Yourself
Pop slop before my favourites 'Cherish' and 'Dear Jessie' - 2
Soul II Soul feat. Caron Wheeler - Back To Life
No 1 for quite a while. I never understood why - 1
Sonia - You'll Never Stop Me From Loving You
No 1 for quite a while. I never understood why - 2
Alice Cooper - Poison
Aw! This is great classic rock 'I feel you coming but it's needles and pins' - 4
Kylie Minogue - Wouldn't Change A Thing
Poor showing from the successful Australian - 1
Black Box - Ride On Time
I didn't know this was sampled? Well I'm surprised. Should have been a great dance classic but a big voice (too powerful for the stick insect on stage) and overplaying means it gets a 3
Cher - If I Could Turn Back Time
Nice song and Cher caresses cannons - 3
Richard Marx - Right Here Waiting
Nice song and Richard Marx caresses . . . Nothing I think - 4
Billy Joel - We Didn't Start The Fire
Keeping up with this song was tough. I know that it's worth it - 4
Milli Vanilli - Girl I'm Gonna Miss You
Ho ho! The kings of miming come up with another comedy classic - 2
Belinda Carlisle - Leave A Light On
Typical Belinda Carlisle - 3
Kaoma - Lambada
The fad that spawned an appalling film. Forgotten what it's called now. Risible that's why it gets a 3
Phil Collins - Another Day In Paradise
I shouldn't like it as much as I do because it is so slow but it gets a 3
Lisa Stansfield - All Around The World
This is slow and awful so it gets a 1
New Kids On The Block - You Got It (The Right Stuff)
Oh oh o oh oh - Heh heh! 3
Linda Ronstadt feat. Aaron Neville - Don't Know Much
Nice chorus, the rest is a pile of pants - 3
Stone Roses - Fool's Gold
I never understood the interest in this - 1
De La Soul - (3 is)The Magic Number
Nah. Uninspiring - 1

Well Paul it's a shame your leaving it at 1989. I've learnt a lot from you.  :)
