Good topic!

Gandalf 4.5
of course we all love Gandalf, he only misses out on the 5 by virtue of his being a bit smug. Or maybe that's just Ian McKellen colouring my judgement.

Frodo 4

Sam 5
...the bravest of the brave

Merry 3
Pippen 3
these two always struck me as a bit of a pain, always needing to be rescued.

Gollum/Smeagol 3
the digitally simulated Gollum in "The Two Towers" movie really ruined the whole film for me, mainly because the voice was exactly the same as a character from a kids TV show in the UK (Jake from The Tweenies)

Legolas 4
before I saw the film I always pictured elves as shorter than men and sort of more like pixies...not like Orlando Bloom!

Gimli 4.5

Aragorn/Strider 4
Viggo Mortensen is one of the best things about the films

Boromir 2
...but Sean Bean is one of the worst!

Theodin 5
I can't wait for "The Ride of the Rohirrim" on the big screen in December, that chapter is my favourite in the whole trilogy

Tree Beard 3
hoooooooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmm

Sauroman 4

Tom Bombadil 4
they completed edited him out of the film! how could they do that!?

Characters:

Gandalf: 5.     Gandalf rocks! He definately has the best lines in the book. I loved Ian McKellan's take on him.
Frodo: 3.       Not a very compelling character in the book. Not very interesting until he begins suffering the effects of the ring.
Sam: 5.       Frodo wouldn't have gotten very far without Sam, would he, Dad?
Merry: 3.5.       In the books, Merry and Pippen were just nothing.
Pippen: 3.5       They had no characterization. They were just kind of
there. The movie mad them much more interesting.

Gollum/Smeagol: 5.    I have an obsession with Gollum's character.
Legolas: 4. Both Legolas and Gimli are good representations of their respective races
Gimli: 4
Aragorn/Strider: 4.     Cool in the book until he becomes king. Awsome so far in the movies.
Boromir: 4.      Very interesting character. Very sympathetic. I thought Sean Bean did a fine job in the movie.
Theodin: 5. Theodin rocks! He's old and he kicks butt!
Tree Beard: 4. He's good in the movie, but he's awsome in the book.
Sauroman: 4. The movie gives us much more insight into Sauroman's doings. He's better in the movie than in the book.
Tom Bombadil: 5 He's the hippie of the book. He rocks!

Characters:

Gandalf - 5.  Cool as Gandalf the Grey, cooler as Gandalf the White
Frodo - 4, more a case of having things done to him than doing.
Sam - 5, a hero!  "If Sam finds out, he'll kill him!"
Merry - 5, love the growth he and Pip go through, physically, spiritually and emotionally.
Pippen - 5, see above.
Gollum/Smeagol - 5, a necessary evil
Legolas - 3
Gimli - 3
Aragorn/Strider - 5
Boromir - 5. Pervy hobbit fancier.
Saroman - 5, also a necessary evil.

I think you're being a little hard on Sauroman as a character. Certainly he was evil, but his character was interesting and his betrayal was such a point of conflict in the books.
