Subject: Favorite Accent

I would vote for the Texas accent and the British accent, which makes them sound so sophisticated.

Okay, so this question is not meant to offend anybody, but I'm just curious. Why is it that so many American chicks make complete fools of themselves over guys with British accents? That always cracks me up. I wonder if they would react the same way if the guys were American. I've pointed this out to many of my British guy pals, and once I made them aware of it, they noticed it alot. They get little or no play in England, but once they hit the States, they're the "flavor of the week" as soon as they say a few words. I guess Adam Ant said it best...
"She says she likes the accent, she thinks it's so polite. I think she's gonna like it more when we're alone tonight." Tee-hee ;)

Question

Which particular "British" accent do people think they are voting for?

Posh like Hugh Grant?  Or one of the stronger regional ones like Daphne in Frasier?  Or what about some West Country (Pam Ayres anybody?)  Or Black Country (like Slade?)

Those who voted for Scottish and Irish shouldn't have voted other, because they're part of Britain too.

I would say that I like all of the English accents...but that's because I don't recall what Pam Ayres or the guys from Slade sound like... ???

Pam Ayres sounded 'loike a bit of a country bumpkin' (being from the West Country and all...), whilst Slade's Wolverhampton dialects were as class as they come...'y'awl roight there mate?!'

Or then again, you could have sumfink as common as muck like mine...!!

I'll go for 'other'...the Southern Irish brogue - sounds dead sexy (and it's not too bad on the women, either...!!), as opposed to the Ulster accent which has all the appeal of fingernails down a blackboard...!!

I like the working class British accents, especially the Liverpool area. I'm not too fond of the posh accents. I'm glad you pointed that out, Karen.

Thanks for the descriptions, Paul, but to really get a sense of what these accents sound like I need to hear them for myself.

BTW, I don't know if I've ever heard someone with a 'Southern Irish brogue'.  Do you know of any well-known individuals who have this accent?

Well, you've got me there, Karen...there may well be a few actors/actresses blessed with it, but I'm not much of a 'filmie' so I couldn't say...

The best description I can give (and this is very bad)...try and imagine (very difficult) Bob Geldof in a very sedate mood...!!

Well I voted Scottish and Irish, because as far as I am concerned there is no such thing as a British accent, I don't think it is possible to be that specific.  So I laughed when I saw that  :)

Though I have to say, I love Pam Ayres' accent.  Always makes me think of a female Benny Hill  ;D

I went for New York accent but I'm not 100% what it is - such ignorance.  ::)

The British brummie (Birmingham and surrounding towns) accent is probably the most unsexiest accent ever. Will turn impressionable young American ladies off British blokes for sure.

Seriously the first time i went to Birmingham i thought they were joking.. i was looking at my dad with tears rolling down my face from laughing, i honestly thought they all played this joke, but alas it was there accent. Wow, there are a lot of fans of the British accent! it's okay, I suppose. All us British love the American accent, but of course, since as the Americans are used to hearing it, they don't think it's that great. it's the same for us British. I think they should have been more specific, ie: South London (Cockney), Liverpool (Scouser), North Eastern etc. I'm from the North East myself, so I don't sound very sophisticated! Infact, I sound dead common!  ;D

You would if you lived over here. Okay, well. South London is sort of like 'Awroight, guv'nor? Dog and bone' things like that. North East goes a bit like this... 'why-aye like, ha'way the lads etc'. And then the central-London snobs are all like: 'Pip-pip, cheerio dear fellows what?'. You kind of get the jist. Liverpudlian accents are accents like Wayne Rooneys (If you've ever heard him before)
