Subject: All-time favourite Dutch artists

Written By: FaultyDog on 05/20/05 at 3:00 pm

So I was a little bored... 8)

Simple question, innit? Just pick one of these splendid Dutch artists that have conquered the world... or died trying. I'd also like to know the "why" -  I won't hold it against you. ;)

Didn't you lot give us Father Abraham & the Smurfs?!!

(If not, blame Belgium...!)

Focus for me (although Golden Earring were good too), who always seemed to make a weekly appearance on 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' (almost legendary British 70s 'serious rock' show)...

I think they made an album with P J Proby - quite possibly one of the strangest pairings in history...!

Mouth & MacNeal, eh? Reminds me - Eurovision's coming up...!!

Oh yes, those little blue arscals..rascals. Well, they're actually French, but it was Dutchman Father Abraham (aka Pierre Kartner) who made them "dance" and "sing" and very famous and stuff...
They haven't totally retired since, as back in 1995 they topped the Dutch charts again with their performance of 2 Unlimiteds "No limit". Their comeback however was shortlived.

As for the Eurovision Song Contest: we won't be there this year... eliminated in the semis. :\'(
I think it's a fraud, but what can you do?

No! No Holland? How can you have a Eurovision without Holland?

('Ding-Dinge-Dong' - marvellous stuff...!!)

We (apparently) don't have to go through that malarkey - we get a guaranteed placing...

...which strikes me as rather odd, judging by some of the crap we've pumped out of late...!!

a: It's happened before... you'll survive!

b: 'Dingadong' is already 30 years ago... we're getting old!

c: some guys have all the luck. All you have to do is contribute (I mean: pay), and you'll never have to worry about qualifying. (This goes for Spain, Germany, France, the UK and.... hey, there's gotta be a fifth...o, Switzerland of course).

d: crap? what crap? Surely you're not referring to Katrina & the Waves or Imaani...

I thought Katrina & The Waves' effort was a right old plodder of a song...

There couldn't have been much competition that night - did anyone else turn up...?!!

I was thinking more along the lines of James Fox (who he?) and the legendary 'nil points' Jemini...

Anyway, apologies for hijacking the thread...

That's funny. I was expecting a ratings thread with something about Rembrandt, Vermeer, or van Gogh.  ;D

But you gave a good list of Dutch artists.

These would be my three favorites of the group...

Golden Earring for Radar Love
Diesel for Sausalito Summernights
Focus for Hocus Pocus

These are good too

Shocking Blue for Venus
Mouth & MacNeal for How Do You Do

And don't forget

Tee Set -- Ma Belle Amie

Of course they also did "She likes weeds", which isn't about drugs - it's REALLY about weeds!

Can't say that I've ever heard of these artists, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're not Dutch.
But don't worry - I won't kill you anyway.  ;)

Been searching the internet - seems you're right, although it really isn't quite clear. There are or have been Dutch members to this "bands" (more like projects) however.

As no-one's given him a shout yet, I'll also throw in George Baker for 'Little Green Bag' alone...

Shame he had to spoil it with 'Paloma Blanca'...!

Have looked in some covers. Koto is Italian. But Laser Dance is allmost a dutch "project". Rofo is pruduced by Fonny De Wulf. Guess dutch?! CoProd by Ray Muylle. This sounds all very dutch to me.

Greets from Germany

Golden Earring

But only tipping it in their favour was the classic "Twilight Zone"

Very close behind were Shocking Blue, Mouth & MacNeal and Focus

Where were Tee-Set ?  :o

They were born in the Netherlands, yes, but since they've lived almost their entire lives abroad I don't really consider them to be Dutch. I have nothing against Vanhalen, though.

But what surprises me most is to see you've also mentioned Time Bandits. I never realised they were known/popular abroad.

Their song I'm Only Shooting Love was a popular dance hit here.  It's a song I didn't actually remember until recently when I found it as part of a double LP set of dance hits from 83/84 called Can't Stop Dancin' - Volume II  :)

If I could be difficult for a moment Henk.

I would have to select Johan Cruyff as my favourite Dutch Artist. He may not have recorded his art but there is no way One could say that he wasn't an artist.

I'm Only Shooting Love was a #6 hit in Dutch Top 40. 1983 was the band's peak year, with three Top 10 hits. Here's a summary:

Live It Up (Dec 1981) PP: 9, WC: 9
Sister Paradise (Apr 1982) bubbling under
I'm Specialized In You (Jan 1983) PP: 2, WC: 10
Listen To The Man With The Golden Voice (Apr 1983) PP: 7, WC: 7
I'm Only Shooting Love (Oct 1983) PP: 6, WC: 7
Reach Out (May 1984) PP: 35, WC: 3
Endless Road (Jun 1985) PP: 16, WC: 10
Dancing On A String (Oct 1985) PP: 28, WC: 5
Only A Fool (Jan 1986) bubbling under
I Won't Steal Away (Apr 1986) PP: 18, WC: 6
We'll Be Dancing (Jul 1987) bubbling under
Wildfire (Oct 1987) bubbling under

There may have been more singles, but those didn't chart.

Those are all great songs.  I'm surprised Reach Out didn't make it higher in the Dutch charts

Yes, I've also stooped low by having both!

And lest we forget Big Jack Charlton with his 'Simple Little Things' from c.1973...

(It is as bad as it sounds!)

Extremely popular in their home country, scoring 13 Top 10-hits in a row and 15 Top 10-hits in total.

2 Unlimited had lots of success here in Canada.  Several of their singles became big hits here including "No Limit" which did hit #1 :)  Unfortunately, this success didn't replicate in America ... They only made it to two hits on Billboard with "Get Ready For This" (US #38) and "Twilight Zone" (US #48)

Apparently, Amber (Marie Claire Cremers) is far more popular in US than she is in The Netherlands. "This Is Your Night" only reached #16.

She is quite successful in the US. She's had many hits on the Billboard Dance Charts like "Sexual (Li Da Di)", "Yes!" and "Need to Be Naked"

I just thought of another good one.  Forrest Thomas (aka Forrest).  I didn't even know he was Dutch until I was googling him.  He did a FANTASTIC electronic cover version of 'Rock the Boat' in 1983 8)

Let Me Think About It - Ida Corr vs Fedde Le Grand (Ida Corr is from Denmark; Fedde is Dutch)
