I notice 'Like A Rolling Stone' isn't doing too well. Like much of Dylans' work, it is one which much be appreciated at a deeper meaning (not to say everyone MUST like it). I too found it repetitive when I first heard it. Though it's sort of a coincidence the Magazine was named after that song  ???. Good Vibrations seems to be doing pretty well though.

Dylan's singing does nothing for me.    And Smells Like Teen Spirit wouldn't even make my personal Top 10000 of all time. :P

Ooooh!  A chance to be an a$$! This I cannot pass up!  8)

1. Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan  4  Dylan had a number of very good songs...this was not one of them

2. Can't Get No Satisfaction - Rolling Stones  6  I was a huge Stones fan for years, but I could pick a hundred others of theirs that I would rather see on the list. A good song, but like most of the others here - overplayed

3. Imagine - John Lennon  1  Imagine no possessions...? Go sell it to the Commies, Johnny-boy..the older I get, the more ridiculous this song sounds... :P

4. What's Going On - Marvin Gaye  5    Not bad, but Trouble Man was better....

5. Respect - Aretha Franklin  3    yeah, I know this is supposed to be a great classic, but it just makes me yawn uncontrollably....

6. Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys  1.5    What did anyone see in these guys...? Well, at least they did accuarately reflect the superficial lifestyle of their state...

7. Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry  6  A nice little rocker, but not among my personal faves...

8. Hey Jude - The Beatles  2    I still contend that if all the Beatles were alive today, and they were together, they would be playing a Vegas lounge every weekend. Schlock, schlock, schlock...

9. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana  NA    I am one of the few fortunates in this world who can truthfully claim never to have heard this song....

10. What I'd Say - Ray Charles  4    See under #1 above.

There are a lot of Dylan songs I would have given very high ratings, but, since I'm just going strictly by what I like, this one didn't do as well.

Despite what they say about it, I think 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' deserves to be one of the top. Not only because it started off a whole new genre (how many songs can claim that?), or because it was overplayed to death, but because it is a really seminal song.

Yeah I too wasn't a big fan of grunge...but it was probably better than 80s hair metal ala Guns and Roses (though GnR was one of the few good examples). I think Nirvana's biggest offence was the inspire such acts as Creed, Live, Reef, 'Nu-Metal' sort of music throughout the 90s...But they utterly changed the whole face of music...something which doesn't have often these days.

See, I liked alot of the 80's hair metal... not particularly the 'fly-by-nighters' like Winger, Bad English, Warrant, Cinderella, etc... but I liked The Scorpions, Metallica, Aerosmith, Tesla, Skid Row, etc... and I also liked 'modern rock' (TMBG, Love&Rockets, etc) but grunge killed both of them!

I don't like to think of grunge as a genre... (yes, I know  ::) just like indie and emo), but... it really isn't. It's basically like... alternative with heavier guitars. I dunno... I don't even see the relation between Nirvana and certain bands named earlier (like Creed)

The Smashing Pumpkins are often classified as Grunge...and while some of their songs were indeed quite grungy (I think the definition of grunge is a simple riffs and lots of distortion) like Cherub Rock, much of their stuff is more what you'd call 'alternative' (though that term's really mis-used). Alternative and Indie are in themselves not genres at all...often misused to classify totally unrelated music.
