For the most part I'm not sure about the actual way to classify as I'm no good at that but there're a few I'd be willing to give a definite no to the emo possibility:

Weezer
Green Day
Franz Ferdinand
POTUSA
Nine Days
Sum 41
The Walkmen
Relient K
Blink-182
Lit
Smash Mouth

I'm not saying the others listed are emo, just saying they're close enough that I can't give a definite answer. (Bravery/Killers almost made my above list but I can vaguely see where they might have small traces)

Before I rate them, please note I consider Emo and Commercial Emo to be two different things.  Commercial Emo is basically boy bands with guitars.

All-American Rejects - Commercial Emo
Green Day - No, but they're partially to blame for Emo's popularity.  Just look at their clothes.
Weezer - Not Emo, but an influence
Simple Plan - Whiny pop-punk.  They're a boy band with guitars who came out before the word Emo was being thrown around everywhere.
Good Charlotte - Pop-Punk.  Their most well known album came out in 2002.
Death Cab For Cutie - Indie Rock
The Killers - some weird New-Wave Revival music or something
Franz Ferdinand - Indie Rock
Linkin Park - Nu-Metal.  They do have A LOT of Emo tendencies, but Emo bands don't rap and have DJs.
Modest Mouse - Indie Rock
Presidents of the United States of America - Their biggest song was in the mid 90's.  Not Emo.
Nine Days - Not Emo.  I only know one of their songs and it wasn't Emo.
Sum 41 - Pop Punk
Fall Out Boy - Commercial Emo
Dashboard Confessional - Emo
Brand New - Emo
Atreyu - Metal.  They have Emo connections though, including being on the same record label as that terrible band Hawthorne Heights.
Panic At The Disco - Commercial Emo
The Bravery - see The Killers
The Walkmen - Never heard of them
The Postal Service - Indie Rock
Relient K - Commercial Emo
Blink 182 - Pop-Punk
Jimmy Eat World - Older form of Emo before it became super popular
Lit - Pop-Punk
Smash Mouth - Just plain crap

The term Emo is really overused.  Emo music is whiny, but not all whiny music is Emo.  Also, I hate the lumping together of Pop-Punk, Indie Rock, and Emo in this topic.  How would Smash Mouth be even close to Emo?

Bright Eyes-The ultimate indiemo.
Arcade Fire-Eh. It's definitely emo-influenced, but it's more A/C indie I suppose.
Architecture in Helsinki-Somewhat indiemo, about as much as Belle and Sebastian.
Belle and Sebastian-Somewhat indiemo.
The Strokes-It's indie hipster music, but not emo.

Progressive rock is when a song has many different stages... much like any other song?

Alternative is basically the same as Modern rock.

Classic rock is any rock before the nineties, really...

And indie is something published by an independant company.

Alternative is supposed to be 'different' from 'mainstream' (whatever that is), but often times very conventional sounding rock is termed 'alternative'. I've heard almost everything - from Green day, to Jane's Addiction, to Red Hot Chilli Peppers bandied around as 'alternative'. Alternative to what? I think we should scrap these ambigious, generalised terms and stick to Blues, Roots, Metal.etc.

Speaking of RHCP, they just played... after Nirvana...

Emo is probably one of the most bullsh*t music terms ever invented...along with 'Alternative', 'Indie', 'Modern/Classic Rock', 'Progressive Rock', 'Acid/anything.'

To me...

Indie-Refers to 2000+ hipster music and indie label music, and maybe some late '90s stuff.
Alternative-Refers to the whole 1985-2000 "alt rock" scene...pretty varied, includes stuff ranging from Tori Amos to RHCP to Radiohead to Nirvana to Sonic Youth to maybe Oasis. 1984-2000ish in the US and 1990-2000 in Britain.
Modern Rock-New wave and post-punk and its derivatives and descendents, including synthpop and some '00s revival stuff. Late '70s and '80s, and '00s rock that is undoubtedly created by the punk revolution but is not punk.
Classic Rock-1964-1979 guitar rock. Includes prog rock, '70s stadium rock, psychedelic music and SF scene music, glam rock, folk rock, British Invasion, early heavy metal, and maybe some disco, pop, Motown, etc. Punk and new wave, though, is modern and not classic rock.
Progressive Rock-'70s guitar rock centered on extremely long songs and elaborate themes...largely British. Includes Emerson Lake & Palmer, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, etc. and in an indirect way Led Zeppelin. Also arguably includes some '90s alt rock and alt metal like Tool and Radiohead.
Emo-Includes both some indie and some pop-punk from 2001+. Gratuitously depressing, pretentious, and whiny music.
Metal-Probably the largest category of any of these...ranges from early '70s stuff like Black Sabbath through hair metal, nu metal, speed metal, real metal...
New Wave-Late '70s-Mid '80s genre that uses synthesizers and pop song construction heavily. Part of the banner of modern rock.
Punk-Another difficult term. The 1977-1982 music centered around the Sex Pistols, Siouxsie Sioux and the Banshees, the Ramones, the Clash, the Jam, the Damned...also arguably includes hardcore and, in a distant way, pop-punk from 1990+.

Indie just means 'independent' - not belonging to a major record label. Hence should have no relation to being a 'genre.' That's why I don't like it when bands are labelled 'Indie' as if it's a genre. They shouldn't be so lazy and properly categorise them. Just avoids alot of confusion.

I keep it simple:

Alternative- Emo, Grunge, Punk, Nu Metal, and all those other sub genres
Modern Rock- Nickelback, Maroon 5, 3 Doors Down, Creed, Matchbox Twenty, Train, Coldplay, Lifehouse generally what they play on adult comtempory stations

I consider most of the aforementioned A/C radio rock you mentioned to either be real '00s A/C (Maroon 5, Lifehouse, 3 Doors Down, Coldplay), all of which is sort of unto itself in its generic blandness, or post-grunge, like Nickelback, Creed, Matchbox Twenty. Nu metal is not really alt rock, IMO, and neither is pop-punk...it's all part of the great radio rock sludge.

Apparently, alt rock was too commercial so they reverted to "indie rock." To me, "indie" is a convenient term to describe the latest wave of alt rock, which includes the modern rock (new wave/post punk/synthpop) revival, the classic rock revival and current indie rock, post-rock, indiemo (Bright Eyes, etc.), emo, screamo, hardcore revival, etc. I also think that all the super-cerebral twee pop, like Architecture in Helsinki, Belle and Sebastian, The Unicorns, fits into the whole thing, and stuff like the Decembrists, Arcade Fire, etc. does too..."indie-yuppie" music.

To me, the mid '00s rock scene is basically like this:

Clear Channel Rock: early '90s grunge (Nirvana), post-grunge (Creed), nu metal (Linkin Park), nu-punk (Blink 182), various '90s (Chili Peppers)
Indie/Modern Rock: (all of these can be collectively considered part of the Emo movement): Neo-wave (The Killers), classic rock revival (White Stripes), emo rock (Fall Out
Boy), hardcore emo/metalcore/screamo/Hot Topic rock (Atreyu), indiemo (Death Cab), smart (ass?  ;D) rock (Arcade Fire)
Pop/Top 40 Rock: Pop-punk/emo pop (Simple Plan), grunge-pop (Lifehouse)

How do the two relate? From what it seems, Clear Channel plays a mix of c. 1999 holdovers. I'd add Maroon 5 and Yellowcard to the Top 40 Rock category...and stuff like James Blunt and Kelly Clarkson.

I think CC owns most of, or a ton of the stations.  Thus, I call any '90s/'00s rock station format CC rock.

Indie just means 'independent' - not belonging to a major record label. Hence should have no relation to being a 'genre.' That's why I don't like it when bands are labelled 'Indie' as if it's a genre. They shouldn't be so lazy and properly categorise them. Just avoids alot of confusion.

I think it's because a lot of indie groups sound similar.

They do, they sort of have the same sort of self-aware "intelligent" sound.

They can be a bit too cerebral at times. Not...sensual, for want of a better word, enough.

Yeah, I can only take very cerebral music and/or very whiny, grating music in small doses. The Talking Heads somehow managed to be both cerebral and highly funky and sensual.

Alternative is basically the same as Modern rock.

Modern Rock is, like, Soul Coughing.

Since I'm bored, and I've never done this before:

On this thread, I list a group of bands, and you decide if you think they're "emo" or "not emo".

All-American Rejects: Yes, especially with the vocals and lyrical nature.
Green Day: No, although American Idiot may appeal to some Emo fans.
Weezer: While they're sort of a '90s band who later picked up some elements, no.
Simple Plan: Yes, a pop/punkified version.
Good Charlotte: From what I've heard, see above.
Death Cab For Cutie: Haven't heard 'em enough to know.
The Killers: No. More indie rock meets new wave revival.
Franz Ferdinand: Slightly. What the Killers may sound like with Emo elements.
Linkin Park: No, nu metal turned slightly '00s alternative.
Modest Mouse: Don't know enough.
Presidents of the United States of America: Wasn't "Lump" from 1994? ;D So, no.
Nine Days: pre-emo in a way, yes.
Sum 41: Sort of. More early '00s pop/punk
Fall Out Boy: YES!
Dashboard Confessional: YES!
Brand New: Don't know?
Atreyu: ?
Panic At The Disco: From what I know, they're more indie.
The Bravery: No, more like an alt rock-ified Killers
The Walkmen: ?
The Postal Service: Can't say fully, but they're more new wave revival. So maybe a little?
Relient K: ?
Blink 182: No, but part of the pop/punk late '90s wave that laid the groundwork for it.
Jimmy Eat World: Yes. While they're more varied than the average band of that nature, I think they were the first majorly popular Emo act. They're to Emo in 2002 what Bon Jovi was to hair metal in 1986/'87.
Lit: Nah, late '90s alternative pop/punk.
Smash Mouth: Not at all, more like surf-tinged late '90s alt pop

My list and your new one are pretty similar.

Overall, do you think pop/punk is emo? Alot of those bands seemed to sorta inspire it and share the same lyrical content. As well as sometimes whiny singing (which isn't necesarilly a knock on it since I like some of those bands).

I think the 1997-2003 wave of commercial, suburban pop/punk inspired the 2004+ emo craze, with, say Good Charlotte, Simple Plan and Jimmy Eat World being sorta both. Despite sharing some common ground, I think the former had to be there first for Emo to become big. Like, I couldn't see Fallout Boy coming out of nowhere in the late '90s and being that popular without Blink 182 and the like.

Yeah from what I've sampled of those various groups, I've come to the conclusion now that they're basically go along with emo, even though that label was not used then really, I think they fit in with it though they aren't the true emo that say My Chemical Romance is. They set the stage as early emo for today's emo.

Hahahaha! How did Modest Mouse even get on here? They're definitely NOT emo. Not... at all, actually. Not even close!

Even their more polished last album is too happy to be emo. :P
