Subject: England cricket hero Trueman dies

Written By: Philip Eno on 07/01/06 at 8:38 am

Former England and Yorkshire fast bowler Fred Trueman dies aged 75 after a battle with lung cancer.

Trueman was the first man to claim 300 wickets in Test cricket and finished with 307 from only 67 matches.

'Fiery Fred' as he came to be known, Trueman had a classical side-on action which helped generate fearsome pace.

Now that's a shame.  :(

Freddie was one of the greats, and a great character to go with it.

Ironicly, today sees the ODI England v Sri Lanka is being played at Headingley, which was Fred Trueman's home ground when he played for Yorkshire.

He is also known for a wonderful cameo appearance in the UK comedy series Dad's Army, in the episode The Test. When a cricket match is to take place between the platoon and the wardens and Mainwarings men struggle but eventually triumph with a little help from Godfrey!
