Subject: Dutch Soccer Competition To End In Breathtaking Climax...

Written By: Henk on 04/23/07 at 3:52 pm

With only one round to go, there are three teams sharing #1 position and in the running for the championship title.

These are the current standings at the top:

1. AZ Alkmaar          72 pts., goal difference: +53
2. Ajax Amsterdam    72 pts., goal difference: +47
3. PSV Eindhoven      72 pts., goal difference: +46

Competition has never been this tight, as far as I know. It's all coming down to the final round, this Sunday.

....and to think PSV Eindhoven had an 11 point lead over Ajax halfway competition.
:o

If AZ Alkmaar were to win the competition, it would be the first time in over 25 years none of the "Big Three" teams (Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord) would take it.

The last "outsider" team to take the title was...AZ Alkmaar, in 1981.

It's a fair old jam up there, Henk...

And I notice that all three are playing the last games against teams that have had a rather indifferent season...could be interesting!

Can you hear the F-Side sing? Ajax! Ajax! Ajax!

The boeren from Eindhoven and Alkmaar will fall at the last hurdle and the super joden will win the league.

You're quite right about the respective opponents...they've little left to play for but their pride.

And just for the record: Feyenoord Rotterdam (usually a Top 3 club) recently lost their away game against Excelsior 4 to 1...

That said, Vitesse Arnhem has always been a difficult opponent for PSV, and Willem II...well, you just never know with those guys. They've even played Champions League in the not so distant past. :o

So basically...it's still anyone's game.

I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you. :P Odds are very much in favor of AZ Alkmaar.

If Alkmaar win, it's a done deal, but otherwise..

...and it turned out otherwise. :( :\'(

PSV Eindhoven are (once again) Dutch champions.

AZ Alkmaar lost their away match against Excelsior Rotterdam 3 to 2. So close, yet so far away...

Anyone remember this...?

Well, I do.

The new season has started some 8 weeks ago. AZ Alkmaar was one of the favorites to win this season's title.

Currently, they're in 12th place. That's only four places away from relegation...
