Written By: Philip Eno on 06/22/07 at 5:06 am

Andy Murray will face Nicolas Lapentti in the first round of Wimbledon next week - if the British number one recovers from injury in time to play.

Fellow Briton Tim Henman has been drawn against former world number one and 1998 French Open champion Carlos Moya.

Roger Federer opens his campaign for a fifth straight title against Russia's Teimuraz Gabashvili.

In other matches, second seed Rafael Nadal plays Mardy Fish, third seed Andy Roddick is up against fellow American Justin Gimelstob, and 2002 champion Lleyton Hewitt takes on Briton Richard Bloomfield.

British number three Alex Bogdanovic will meet Chris Guccione of Australia.

As far as the British women go, number one Katie O'Brien will play Germany's world number 106, Sandra Kloesel, Anne Keothavong faces third seed Jelena Jankovic, and Naomi Cavaday takes on Martina Hingis.

Melanie South, who reached the second round at Eastbourne, will be hopeful of an upset against Japan's 26th seed Ai Sugiyama.

Come on Tim!

Au contraire, as your near neighbours would say...

You're partly right about not watching much tennis (I didn't watch much many years ago)...but I can still recall a lot of the almost legendary 70s and 80s names...

Well, I could hardly agree with you...that would be admitting that I too am getting old. Which of course I'm not. :P

I don't paticularly like to watch tennis (you never know how long it will take you), but I do know/have heard of most of the players seeded.

I would venture to say, and Henk let me know if you agree/disagree....that no matter how much you watched or didn't, tennis was big enough back then that you couldn't help but at least hear about the players (and thank goodness not for the same reasons most people recognize football players' names these days!).  Doesn't mean we're getting old  ;)

Spectators saw red when cheeky French teenager Tatiana Golovin made her belated appearance at Wimbledon.

The 19-year-old blonde risked breaking the strict Wimbledon dress code when she appeared on an outside court for her rain-delayed first-round match against Su-Wei Hsieh, of Taipei, wearing red knickers.

But the Moscow-born Golovin, who lists Dirty Dancing and Grease as her favourite films, was unrepentant over her brightly-coloured underwear.

"I think it's totally in the dress code," she told her post-match press conference.

"There's a little red outline and they say red is the colour that proves that you're strong and you're confident, so I'm happy with my red knickers."

After grinding out a 5-7 6-3 8-6 victory to earn a second-round meeting with 16-year-old Tamira Paszek, Golovin intends to stick with her lucky red pants for as long as she remains in the tournament.

"I think so, as long as I keep on winning," she added. "For now, for these two weeks, it's going to be red. Then it's a surprise for after."

I read he was due to play an exhibition recently, at the age of 51, against 1987 Wimbledon winner Pat Cash. He had to pull out after getting his leg badly bitten by an Alsatian dog.

Also of interest, that he rang Roger Federer in 2001 to congratulate/ thank him for preventing Pete Sampras from equalling his 5 straight Wimbledon record. However, it seems times have changed, ... that he's keen to see his record equalled,  and he is quite friendly with Federer. It appears that they actually had a practice match together some time ago. Borg it seems intends to be at Wimbledon (centre court, final weekend)  should Federer (as expected) make the final, and to congratulate him, saying he may well go on to be the greatest player ever (if he isn't already). Personally though, I've yet to take to Federer in anything remotely like the way I did to Borg (whose hand I shook a few years back).

Tim Henman suffered another desperate Wimbledon disappointment as he came back from two sets down only to lose in the fifth to Spain's Feliciano Lopez.

The Briton, playing his 14th Wimbledon, looked doomed at two sets and a break down but found his best form to level.

However, it was Lopez who grabbed the key break at the start of the decider and went on to win 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 2-6 6-1.

Well, I suppose 'better late than never' that they're apparently finally working on getting a roof on one of the courts, so play can go on in future years. Still, I have to ask why the hell did it take so long for them to bite the bullet / admit that they should catch up with other countries in providing this facility? As somebody born in the UK (London) , I was embarrassed to watch this charade unfold year after year, decade after decade ....  at the worlds 'premier' tennis tournament. Surely Britain could afford this? Seems a bunch of 'stick in the muds' (cheapskates?)  had other ideas .... Looked a bit 3rd world that the eyes of the world saw Britain as impotent / too stuck in tradition to do anything about the elements as global coverage waited .... and waited .... and waited ..... for nothing to happen!

Spent many of a night watching waiting for rain to stop, only to hear the familiar chant 'play suspended/ cancelled for the day' ....

Wimbledon organisers will be forced to pay out more than £1m to spectators who endured a rain-hit day at the All England Club on Saturday.

Fans on Centre Court only saw 57 minutes of action and are entitled to a full refund on their ticket.

If Amelie Mauresmo's win over Mara Santangelo had lasted three minutes longer, organisers would have saved over £500,000.

Court One spectators can claim a half refund after seeing 74 minutes of play.

Saturday saw the worst weather of the championships so far with play starting almost two hours later than scheduled at 1455 BST.

And after Mauresmo and Maria Sharapova completed their matches, the rain arrived again with play finally abandoned at 1850 BST.

Well, I suppose I hope Federer makes it to the final ... just to see Borg in the crowd, although unlike Borg, I'm not too sure I want Federer to match his record .... although someone has to do it one day, and Federer may well go on to surpass it.

Since Borg is the last male to win the French Open and Wimbledon titles in the same calendar year (all the way back in 1980!), I probably don't want Nadal to win Wimbledon either ... so that record too lasts longer. Seems highly unlikely though that the winner will not be one of those 2 guys ...  :\'(

John McEnroe has criticised Wimbledon's organisation and believes the fixture backlog is unfair on the men's draw.
The tournament is badly behind schedule after seven days of rain.

Three-time champion and BBC pundit McEnroe said Wimbledon had "put themselves in this situation. There's been some bungled scheduling".

He added: "They didn't play on Sunday, they didn't put Rafael Nadal's game against Robin Soderling on first (on Tuesday) and now it has cost them."

Wimbledon organisers are fighting an increasingly desperate battle to get this year's event finished on time.

Wednesday should be quarter-finals day for the men, but two third-round ties have yet to be completed.

And the American added: "I totally disagree with the decision not to play on Sunday.

Well, I didn't see that final ... but having seen or should I say HEARD one in which Venus featured the other day .... I'm glad not to have bothered. In the end, I turned the sound off. I find it highly irritating to watch what should be a graceful exhibition of silky skills punctuated every few seconds by these awesome horrific screams. How they let her get away with what strikes me as such blatant 'gamesWomanship' ... I don't understand!

John Newcombe, whilst commentating,  made the observation that in the early rounds, when Venus had little to fear/ lose, she was not screaming at all. As the ante was raised (in later matches), so were the lungs.

I can't believe that many of the opponents on the other side of the net do not find this needless tribal screaming distracting / an interference to their concentration.  It seems some champions have the mentality that they intend to win  ... by hook, or by CROOK ! >:( >:( >:(  (and those who can see the screamers off ... I want YOU to win! ... so I can go back to focusing on the tennis!).  >:(

I watched it, and loved it, every grunt, groan, and screech, and hope she does it a few more times.    I also loved the way her father comforted Mr Bartoli, and you could see he made Mr Bartoli feel a bit better.  Sportsmanship at its best.

Set a new record for the lowest womens seed to win Wimbledon. Like the last time she won Wimbledon, I believe she was ranked something like 14th. Never count her out.

Or Serena for that matter.  She probably would've played in the final if not for her bum leg injury.
