Subject: MLB 2010

Written By: Rice_Cube on 02/03/10 at 10:08 am

Going on 102 seasons now...but we shall remain ever-hopeful!

The Cubs sort of fuxxored themselves with the Milton Bradley situation...but got some fix-it signings in the offseason after dumping Bradley for another POS player in Carlos Silva.  Waiting for most of the ginormous contracts to fizzle out, and then there will be cash freed up for big time signings in the following postseason as a number of big names will simultaneously hit the market.

Cubs probably won't see a World Series championship for a while, but it'd be nice if they at least got there to have something to build on.

Red Sox lost Jason Bay. David Ortiz is on the downside of his career. Red Sox don't look as good this year as they have the last many. Can anyone stop the Yankees?

I dunno if you need Jason Bay anyway.  At least the starting pitching improved on paper with the addition of Lackey.

That's right, the Redsox got lots of key players.

What I'm upset about is that LAD got rid of Randy Wolf and Juan Pierre. I liked Pierre; he was really good, both offensively and defensively. He did a fine job in '09 for the two months that Manny was suspended...and was really great on the basepads. As for new acquisitions, I know that the Dodgers acquired Jamey Carroll in mid-December, but his jersey # is to be determined. I hope he's good. I haven't heard about any other acquisitions, except for some minor-leaguers.

Red Sox needs another power hitter. Bay is gone. Ortiz has something to prove this year. Hope he won't be batting .180 with 2 HR's in the middle of May.

Cubs signed all their arbitration-eligible guys except for Theriot, whose demands seem a bit extreme but may end up making $3M for the next year.  Also have a few guys on minor league contracts to improve competition during spring training.  Should be an interesting season.

I think he was injured quite a bit.  The DH, unfortunately, is a part of the game so using that as a crutch against HOFness kinda sucks for them.

Ted Lilly ahead of schedule it seems...no word on when the Theriot hearing will be.  From what I read the Cubs may win but it might end up being a tossup...many good points either way, I'm voting for the Cubs though because Theriot shouldn't be worth $3.4M.

He's actually pretty average.  The other comparable shortstops to him are overpaid.  The only reason he can get away with the salary demands is because the Cubs don't have a lot of depth at SS.

And that will be his case, other comparable SS makes a certain $ amount, he will want similar. Sadly, it goes that way sometimes.

With all this snow still on the ground and more on the way it's kind of hard to think about baseball but
it is getting to be that time of year. I still wish the Phillies opened their wallets a little and kept Cliff lee,
a rotation with Halliday, Lee and Hamels sounds pretty damn good. Oh well, we'll see if Hamels can get
back his old form, at least that is what the Phillies are hoping. I still don't understand the signing of Polanco,
he left the Phillies because he didn't want to play third base anymore, he wanted to play second. Now he's
back to play third. The same base he didn't want to play anymore.  ???

Like you guys need any more help repeating...sheesh :P

If you guys only have a backup third baseman then it kind of makes sense.  Utley is too good of a 2B to take out late in games simply for defensive purposes...Feliz is probably gone, right?  I bet he realized that Detroit wasn't really going anywhere and Philly was his best bet to get back to the World Series so he just said "whatever".

Once you win it kind of spoils you.  ;D

It's just that there were other options for third. Chone Figgins was available, a true lead off hitter as well. I don't think the organization had
the nads to tell Rollins he'd be hitting 6th. Rollins is weak at the lead off spot but he'll throw a hissy fit if they try to put him down in the line up.

Yeah, Rollins is fast but he doesn't actually have a good OBP right?  I'd probably put Victorino at the #1 position and Utley/Howard right behind him to give them the most at-bats.

For that very reason I wish Lou Piniella would hit Fukudome first instead of Theriot...Theriot belongs in the #8 spot (#9 if he'd hit the pitcher 8th to give Lee/Ramirez more RBI chances).  Too old school!

“I don’t know,” he said. “I just know I’m not going to be here.”

Hey, I agree with ya, Kin. I wonder if they will drop the DH one day. I think they brought it in coz the 60s was the decade of the pitcher, they lowered the pitching mound ( I think) after 1968 and they wanted to generate more excitement and of course ($$) so they brought in the DH for more offense.
40 years later, the National league still won't adopt it. Kudos to them.

True that, especially after Manny was suspended for 2 months last year. ::)

re: Nick Johnson: Yeah, I guess he'll be the Yanks' everyday DH, replacing Hideki Matsui, who will most likely be the Angels' primary DH, since Vlad Guerrero in return signed with the Texas Rangers. After Matsui's performance in last year's World Series, he should provide some good offense for the Angels this year.

Mark McGwire was saddened to learn his estranged brother (Jay) was writing a book that chronicled their use of performance-enhancing drugs.  He was so upset by the breach of trust that he thinks reconciliation is out of the question.

“I don’t plan on ever seeing him again,” Big Mac said Thursday.

Jay McGwire says in the book that he persuaded his brother to start using steroids regularly in 1994 and set him up with a supplier. He says Mark regularly used an array of drugs through 1996 that included Deca-Durabolin, human growth hormone, Dianabol, Winstrol and Primobolan. McGwire later used androstenedione, a steroid precursor that wasn’t banned by baseball until 2004, when it became a controlled substance.

Yup. The Dodgers will begin their season in Pittsburgh (with an idle date next Tuesday; I dunno what that's about), and then travel to Florida to play the Marlins. They will play their first home game on Tuesday April 13th against the Arizona Deebacks.

I think Pittsburgh has just about the worst record in pre-season. Long gone are the days of the 70s when Pittsburgh was a powerhouse. and they had success with Bonds and Bonilla some 20 years ago.

That's right, they haven't finished a regular season with a winning record since the early 1990's. Namely, '92, when they won the NL East division and lost to the Atlanta Knaves (who were still part of the West) in the NLCS.

Nope, they haven't. But they've made it before then, only to lose in the playoffs. A notable example is 1989, when the A's won the ALCS and went on to sweep the earthquake-interrupted Bay Area World Series against the Jints.

For most of the past 15 years, the Evil Empire has dominated the AL East division, (except in 1995, '97, and 2007, when they won the AL Wildcard spot). I forget who won the division in 1995, but I know it wasn't the Jays. In 1997 the other bird team (the Baltimorioles) won it, but hasn't made the postseason since then either.

Twelve years later, the Redsox won the AL East again, but defeated Cleveland in the ALCS.

They had some opportunities to cash runners in (including a situation with a runner on 3rd and nobody out), but no avail. The Bucs won in the tenth on a bases-loaded walkoff single.

On the plus side, L.A. did get their first home run of the 10's today: a solo shot by Russell Martin in the 5th inning. And James Loney turned a brilliant unassisted double play in the 7th inning, catching a line drive and tagging out a runner who was already at first.

Thankfully that was it. Even though Broxton finished 'em off, he still almost let it get away.

Today's Giants-Dodgers game remained scoreless through 6 innings, until a Giants batter hit a home run in the 7th...and then in the bottom of the 8th, L.A. found themselves in a scoreless drought for at least 17 straight innings, until Garret Anderson walked (and was replaced on the basepads by pinch runner Blake DeWitt) and Manny Ramirez smacked a towering home run to give L.A. a 2-1 lead. This was Manny's 548th career home run, which ties him on the all-time list with Mike Schmidt. And Jonathan Broxton pitched a perfect 9th inning for the save, giving L.A. the series win and closing out a 4-2 homestand. This makes their record 6-6 on the year.

Yankees lost a series yesterday, for the first time this season. :D In the bottom of the 7th, with 2 on and 2 out, the Angels were up 5-4, and the Yankees were gonna intentionally walk Kendry Morales...but after one Intentional Walk pitch, Girardi changed his mind and decided to have Marte (the Yankee reliever) pitch to Morales...and I bet Kendry is glad that they pitched to him, cuz he smacked one of the pitches high over the centerfield wall for a 3-run homer, thereby tacking on some insurance runs...and the Angels hung on to that 8-4 lead and won the game.

Dodgers rained out in New York against the Mets. Hopefully that game will be made up as part of a doubleheader tomorrow or the next day.

If they're not careful, they will end up with a worse record than the Baltimorioles. In tonight's game, they were getting people on base with nobody out (or maybe 1 out), but just couldn't cash them in! The problem is, they don't have any effective starters (since they got rid of Randy Wolf...stupid idea!), or any real power hitters. (Juan Pierre would've been great to keep on the team, too.)

But they're still in last place in that division. And they still have yet to cross the five hundred mark (which I hope they do). Joe Torre needs to do something, altho I don't know what.

Right now the Tampas have the best MLB record. And they are not scheduled to play my team this year. (For the record, they are the only team that has not yet played in Dodger Stadium. Maybe they will in 2013.)

Dodgers are getting the crap beaten out of them right now. Ten to nothing Brew Crew (I forget what inning). LA got bombarded with 9 runs in the second inning, thanks to some crappy pitching by Curtain Clayshaw. All the offense that the Dud-gers have managed was only one hit. I don't have any hopes for them tonight. They seriously need some good pitchers on their staff. Kershaw doesn't seem very good at all; he's got 1 win, 1 loss (but he's in line for his second tonight), and several no-decisions so far this year. And with Vicente Padilla sidelined and Charles Haeger ineffective, they're gonna need to do some serious work on improving their starting pitching rotation. This can't go on. They're never gonna cross the .500 mark without decent starters.

That was Monday night's game. Looks like the Sox might sweep, if they haven't done so already.

Speaking of sweeps, the Dud-gers are trying to avert one by the Brew Crew, who have never swept the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium (but L.A. has swept 'em a few times, both in L.A. and Milwaukee). In tonight's game, L.A. went up 3-0 after two innings; by this inning in the game yesterday and the day before, the Brewers had already scored a multitude of runs. Newbie John Ely seems to be doing pretty good in tonight's game (although he didn't do so well last week in NY).

Update...still 3-0 L.A. through 6 innings, but they blew a bases-loaded-and-nobody-out situation by hitting into a force play at the plate, striking out, and striking out. Injuries have plagued the Phillies so far. Rollins is out again and it's been said that,"As Jimmy goes, so the Phillies go."

Written By: nally on 05/31/10 at 11:25 pm

So, in tonight's Dbacks-Dodgers game, both starters go 8 innings, but neither one wins or loses. Rodrigo Lopez of the Diamondbacks pitches a gem, allowing only 2 earned runs (2 others were scored in the 8th inning to tie up the game, but they were unearned because of two errors by Arizona second baseman Kelly Johnson on the same play); Chad Billingsley of the Dodgers surrenders three early home runs to the Dbacks in the first two innings; and they throw a combined total of 235 pitches (Lopez 115, Billingsley 120), but the game is decided in the bottom of the 9th inning. With one out and the winning run (Casey Blake) 90 feet away, Arizona reliever Esmerling Vasquez is charged with a balk, allowing Blake to score and win the game. Vasquez walked off the mound, all confused, probably thinking to himself, "What'd I do?" A rather unusual way for the game to end.

Today the Dodgers played a day game, and once again they took a scoreless tie into extra innings...before finally winning it in the 14th, 1-zip. So this means they complete a sweep of the Dbacks (who've now lost all 9 games of a current roadtrip, and 10 overall), winning all three games walk-off style, playing a total of 33 innings.

Oh, and in other news, Armando Galarraga of the Detroit Tigers loses a perfect game with only one out to go, on a play that the 1st base umpire made a mistake in calling. So he had to settle for a shutout.

More importantly, the Phillies beat the Padres in Philadelphia, thereby cutting the leads of the respective teams in the NL East and West divisions. It was in the bottom of the 7th when the Cubs broke through with a hit (with 2 out), and that guy later scored. Ted Lilly kept a no-hitter through 8 innings, but then CWS pinch hitter Juan Pierre led off the 9th with a single. Even though the game was on the line in the 9th with Carlos Marmol trying to preserve a win for all of Ted Lilly's hard work, it was still more interesting than the Angels-Dodgers game.

Boston has now made it a 3-team race in the AL east, so they need to take 2 out of 3 from LA just to keep pace. Of course, L.A has San Diego to contend with as well and need to keep pace with them.

Yeah, he's been one of their consistent starters (even when he doesn't do so well)...but their options are ever so limited as to who can fill his void when they need a fifth starter, now that Padilla is back. (I think he replaced Billingsley in the rotation after he was placed on the D.L.) Kuroda, Kershaw, Ely, and Padilla are in the current rotation, in that order, and of those guys, Kershaw and Kuroda seem to be doing the best job as of late. Ely was great during the month of May, but he hasn't won since then. They just need a true ace on the staff.

Kuroda did okay tonight, even though he allowed two runs in seven innings. Only problem is that his teammates couldn't give him any run support whatsoever!

I am so angry I could scream right now. And I bet most of the Dodgers players are, too.

Clayton Kershaw threw 100 pitches through 7 innings against the Evil Empire. He clearly deserved to win the game. Especially with a 6-2 lead going into the bottom of the 9th. And what does Broxton do? He gets the leadoff man out, Mark Texeira, but then it all falls apart. And then in extra innings, George Sherrill hands the game to the E.E. Plus, the umpires made some disputed calls, especially the home plate umpire. I think Torre should've left Belisario in to pitch the 9th; he was clearly effective in the 8th inning. If I were Torre, I would've kept Belisario in, and then if things got out of hand, then turn to Broxton as a last resort.

I'm gonna have a long list of smite-ees in the appropriate thread, if I ever get there.

Right now the Dodgers aren't doing so well in Arizona against the cellar dweller Diamondbacks, who have Kirk Gibson as their new manager. There are already three runs on the board for the Dbacks against Hiroki Kuroda, who is clearly struggling.

Edit: 1st inning is finally over! But not without Kuroda making 41 total pitches. He ain't gonna last very long.

...yep, I was right. Kuroda was lifted before the end of the 2nd inning, after being bombarded with 6 total Arizona runs. I think this was his worst regular-season outing. Dodgers ended up with 5 of their own while the Dbacks put up a total of 12.

The Error-zona Diamondbacks commited half a dozen errors in last night's game, leading the Dodgers (who scored a total of 14 runs, a big chunk of which were unearned) to a near-shutout victory. The only Arizona run was a leadoff homer in the 9th off Jon Broxton, who had not pitched since blowing a four-run lead against the Evil Empire last weekend.

Dodgers fail to recover from a 6-run deficit given them in the 3rd inning, thanks to Joe Torre not lifting John Ely in the 2nd inning. Ely seems to do great against teams within the NL West, but outside the division he's not so good at all. After Ely surrendered half a dozen runs in 3 innings, the relievers shut down the Marlins for the rest of the game, while L.A. managed to pull within one run and lose 6-5. :-\\

Dodgers win their home opener against the Cubs to keep pace with the Padres, Giants, and Rockies (who all won their respective games). Clayton Kershaw pitches 8 innings, striking out a dozen and throwing 97 pitches altogether, and Broxton nails down the save (which I wish he coulda done against the Yankees not too long ago, when Kershaw had pitched a gem).

Dodgers fail to fully overcome deficit, and lose 7-3 (I think). Yes, and I enjoyed watching the whole game on ESPN tonight. O0 Padilla had a no-hitter through five innings (I think) and then in the sixth inning a Cubs batter broke through. At least the shutout was intact, although a couple of Cubs runners got to third. Well...tonight, the National League did something for the first time in 14 years...

They won an All-Star game!!!

That's right, the curse is finally over for them. It mostly had to do with the NL pitching, and the AL's inability to cash in runners who were in scoring position. Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann knocked in all of the NL's three runs...in the same pitch, and was named series MVP. Most all the other National Leaguers did great, too...except for Hong-chih Kuo (who pitches for my L.A. Dodger team), who threw a ball too high in attempt to get a runner out; this led to an unearned run (the only one scored by the AL).

So this means whichever team wins the NL pennant will host Games 1 and 2 of the World Series. I'd like for it to be my team, but they gotta play well for the remainder of this season.

I think the Dodgers may have found a new reliable closer...one by the name of Kenley Jansen, who pitched a perfect 9th inning to preserve a 1-0 victory over the New York Mets. Jansen (who wears jersey number 74; I don't think any other Dodgers have worn that number) came up yesterday as a reliever in yesterday's extra-inning game and pitched very well (although I didn't see it, cuz I had somewhere to go), so today he was asked to close out today's game in the 9th inning, and he retired all three batters he faced. Now there is no more "Casey Blake DeWitt" on the Dodgers. (Casey Blake is still there, at third base, but Blake DeWitt is no longer with LAD, so the "before-and-after" combination is lost.) Hopefully Ted Lilly will provide his new team with some decent starting pitching, despite posting a losing record with CHC this year.

Dodgers built up a 9-2 lead in today's game, but the darn bullpen couldn't hold on to it. I am sick of Joe Torre making stupid decisions as manager that cost us games. The bullpen couldn't stop the Phils from rallying in the 8th inning, when they cut the deficit to 9-6, and after L.A. went 1-2-3 in the 9th, he handed the ball to Broxton to try to close it out. Well...the Cincinnati Reds win a game at Dodger Stadium for the first time in 5 years. :( L.A. didn't have their best stuff, and Carlos Monasterios (subbing for sidelined starter Vicente Padilla, who has gone on the DL for the second time this year) didn't last too long.

On a better note, Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners limited the Evil Empire Yankes to only four hits, denying them any runs!!! :D :D

Cincinnati has been red hot recently, pulling away a little from STL.

That's right; they recently swept the cellar-dweller Dbacks in Arizona this week, and the Cardinals seem to be sinking, having just dropped 5 straight.

Dodgers smack two pairs of back-to-back home runs en route to an 8-5 victory over the Cincinnati Reds, giving Chad Billingsley his 10th win of the season and handing Jonny Cueto his fourth loss (chasing him after 4 innings). This, coupled with the Cardinals' victory over the Giants, cuts a game off the Reds' lead in the NL Central and puts the Dodgers one game closer to the Rockies and Padres, who lost to the Dbacks and Brewers, respectively. The win for L.A. also means that they can't lose 100 games this year. 8)

But they aren't a Bench, Rose, Morgan, Perez big red machine of the 70s yet.

With Baltimore's pitching from 1969 to 1974, and the reds hitting, combine those two teams and they would have won 120 games each year with several world series

Oh, and Lou Pinella has decided to retire from baseball management today, stepping down as manager of the Chicago Cubs as soon as today's game finished. He'd initially intended to manage the team through the end of the season this year, and then call it a managerial career, but a family situation back home was the reason for his decision to step down today. In a career spanning nearly a quarter of a century, he managed the New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds (managing the team to a World Series title in 1990), Seattle Mariners, Tampa Bay Rays (back when they had "Devil" in their name) and Chicago Cubs, with gaps in 1989 and 2006.

STL loses to baseball's worst team today. They are making it difficult on themselves.

Of course, the NL Central seems to be a weak division, with four teams (out of six) with losing records. That division will undoubtedly be won by either the Reds or the Cardinals.

But as for the Reds, they've already dropped the first two games in San Fran to the Jints, after taking two of three from the Dodgers. I hope the Reds can win this afternoon to avoid a sweep.

No he isn't. He was great in the All-Star Game, but seems to have really gone downhill, which is why Torre removed him from the closer's role. Tonight Kuo entered the game during the 8th inning, but couldn't stick around for the 9th because his spot was due up in the bottom of the 8th (I think?). You're absolutely right, the team definitely needs a better closer in 2011 if Kuo doesn't get the position. 4!

That's right, my team has finally broken out of a losing streak. They won in 11 innings, thanks to a 2-run homer by Jay Gibbons. The winning pitcher was Octavio Dotel.

Hiroki Kuroda pitched well for the most part, allowing only one run. He left the game leading, but the bullpen allowed the tying run to score, thereby denying him his 11th victory. If that did come to fruition, I would root for the Giants. You know why? Because I root for any MLB team that plays the Yankees.

Yep, they last met in 1962 in the WS, but the E.E. won.

In 2002, when the Giants were paired with the Braves in the NLDS, I cheered for the Giants because I didn't want the Braves and their tomohawk chant moving on. And that series worked in my favor. However, the Jints also won the NLCS over the Cardinals...and I was going to cheer for the Angels in the World Series anyway.

Yes. Vinny always calls the Dodger home games, as well as the road games against NL West opponents. The same goes for when they play in AL West stadiums, except for that of the Texas Rangers (where they played last year for the first time since 2000), since it is east of Denver. He used to call all the Dodgers games, but in recent years he has cut down his work schedule.

yeah. But L.A. cannot get the wildcard, since the most they can win now is 85, and the Braves already have 86 wins. The NLW-leading Jints have 84 wins, and they do not play the Dudgers anymore this year. The Padres will come to Dodger Stadium for a three-game series beginning tomorrow, while the Jints go to Chicago to play the Cubs, and the Rockies go to Arizona (who have already clinched last place in the NLW).
After the Dodgers finish their series with the Pods, they go to Arizona and Colorado, and then finish the regular season at home with the Dbacks.

Still, I don't see the Dodgers getting higher than 3rd place.

Elsewhere, Dodgers avert a sweep by the Padres by beating them 3-1; Hiroki Kuroda went 8 strong innings to earn a long-deserved win. This knocks the Padres out of first place again because the Giants routed the Chicago Flubs 13 to goose-egg in Wrigley Field earlier today.

Yep, the remaining races are still tight as ever!

Padres defeated the Gints 4-2 this afternoon while the Braves lost to the Phillies by a touchdown (7-0), putting the Pods and Braves in a tie for the NL wildcard, and the Pods 1 game behind the Jints for the NL West crown!

If the Padres and Braves both win tomorrow, then they and the Giants would all finish with a record of 91-71. Since this would put the Giants and Padres in a tie for the NL West title and with the Braves for the NL wildcard, it would be a three-way tie, but the division title must be decided first. So the Padres and Gints would play a one-game playoff on Monday in San Diego (since the Pads won the head-to-head season series against the Gints), and the winner of that game would go play the Braves in Atlanta on Tuesday. (IOW, one team would play a 164th game!)

If the Padres win and the Knaves lose tomorrow, then only the Padres and Gints would finish at 91-71, and the Braves would be out altogether. That's what I hope happens. SF and SD would still play a tiebreaker in San Diego on Monday, and the winner of that game would be crowned NL West champ, and the loser would win the wildcard.

If the Padres and Braves both lose tomorrow, then they'd be tied for the NL wildcard at 90-72, and the Padres would fly to Atlanta for the wildcard playoff on Monday (since the Braves won their season series against the Padres). The Giants would win the NL West division with a record of 92-70.

Well... there will be no game 163 for any teams this year.

Braves won; so did the Giants. This means bye bye Padres. :\'( That ten-game skid of theirs from August 26 to September 5 (which preceded a three-game sweep of the Dodgers) was a disappointment that cost them first place and made it hard for them to get back into first. So the Gints win the NL West division, and the Knaves win the NL Wildcard. 8-P

What's more, the Giants and Braves will be paired up in one half of the NLDS, which means I will have to cheer for the Giants in that series (something that I don't normally do), just like I did in 2002. And the Reds will be paired with the Phillies in the other half. I'm rooting for Cincy in that series.

Yankeez lost; Rays won; this gives the AL East crown to Tampa Bay, and the AL wildcard to the Evil Empire. Yankees will be paired with Twins in one half of the ALDS, so I will cheer for the Twins; Rangers will play the Tampa Rays. I'm okay with either of those teams, but I'd like to see Tampa win.

I know; they could reach the World Series for a third straight year. If so, then the Series would open in their ballpark this time, rather than in the AL champion's park.

If the NLCS should come down to Philly vs. Knaves, I will by all means cheer for Philly (just like I did in 1993) because I detest the Braves' tomohawk Chant. But if it's Giants and Phils, then I may be torn.

Texas Rangers' Cliff Lee pitches good ball en route to a 5-1 victory over the Tampa Ray Bays. I was hoping Tampa could win, but they didn't do any scoring until a solo shot by Ben Zobrist late in the game.

Roy Halladay has a no-hit bid through 7 innings for Phillies against Cincinnati, whose starter Edinson Volquez couldn't survive the second inning. Game is still in progress; I will resume watching it shortly.

Evil Empire vs Minnesota Twins later on. Hopefully the Twinkies can come through this time, unlike the last three occasions in which the teams met in postseason.

Oh yes! It was only the second no-hitter in postseason history, the only other one being Don Larsen's perfect game of the 1956 World Series.

Halladay only allowed one baserunner, and that was by means of a walk. He only had a couple other three-ball counts, I think.

Something I wish they could have done last year.

But if the Rangers should reach the World Series for the first time ever, and the Phils capture their third straight pennant, then the Game One starters would undoubtedly be Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay. Lee would be pitching against a team he was a member of in last year's World Series! (And he'd be the visiting pitcher once again, since the NL has HFA* in this year's series.)

I watched tonight's game on FOX television in high definition. Great picture. I'm assuming that because of the placement of the FoxBox (the diagram that displays the score and status of the game), the regular channel might show a "compressed" picture.

Yeah, early on I was anticipating that they would be the probable Game One starters if Philly wins tonight, forces a decider tomorrow night, and wins that one.

Again, Lee would be the Game 1 visiting pitcher, since he faced the host Yankees in a visiting Philly uniform last year; and this year he would face the host Phillies (or Gints) in a visiting Texas uniform.

San Fran wins game 3-2 and the Seres 4 games to 2. Texas Vs San Fran. The series no one thought would occur.

I know... BAH! >:( And Howard continues his RBI drought.

The Philles had several scoring opportunities, including a leadoff double by Raul Ibanez in one inning, but they just couldn't cash him (or any of their baserunners) in. So frustrating!

I will definitely be cheering for Tex.

I don;t care who wins now. Texas has never won, San Fran last won, many years ago.

Sure, no problem. I understand a Dodger fan won't like the Giants.
Giants haven't won since 1954, they were still in NY at the time. (The year Mays made "The Catch" )

So they have never won in San Fran. Be nice to see them win, or Texas, who have never won (not even when they were the Washington Senators from 1961 to 1971..I remember that team too, I still have some of their baseball cards)

The Phillies are done, I could see it coming. They were in the same funk they've been in most of the year.
For some reason they would look at strikes and swing at balls. It was real fitting for the ending; two on, two
out with Special K at the plate. I told The Boy he would look at strike three, man I hate being right.

I don't think the Giants can win the Series, they play scared ball not small ball. I am a firm believer in the fundemental
game of baseball. Move runners, make the hard plays look easy and the easy plays routine but the Giants method is
pitiful. On three different occasions they used the first and second hole hitters to sacrafice bunt in the early innings to
move runners. That is playing scared, if it was the eigth or ninth I could see it...maybe, but definitly not the second or
third. They took themselves out of a potential big inning. You only get 27 outs don't give them away early.

The Catch...

One of the many curses that destroyed Cleveland Sports....

But the Giants have the Coogan's Bluff Curse. There, the New Yorkers said that The Giants would NEVER win another World Series. And if that's the case...the World Series may be the Rangers game, but...if the Giants win...the curse is broken!

Rangers should be the favorite. The Phillies top players just didn't hit. LKincecum is good, but the rest of the SF staff isn't that good.

Hey, at least the Browns beat the Super Bowl champs (Saints) today.

Lincecum and Cain are good, but the others are hit-and-miss pretty much.  Basically they just need to get the ball to their bullpen with the lead and it's over.  But being that the Rangers have similarly good pitching and a much better offense, the Rangers have to be favored.

Since the ball can bounce funny though, we'll just sit back and enjoy the games 8)

Thought Cliff Lee would be unbeatable in the postseason? Think again.

For the first few innings he was pretty good, and the Rangers gave him an early 2-nothing lead. However, as the game rolled on, things started going downhill. Tonight he just couldn't get out of the fifth inning, as the Gints got 7 total runs off of him, 6 of which were earned. And the Rangers couldn't recover from there. :(

But hey, it's only Game One; maybe things will improve tomorrow night.

Well, when the Gints were leading by seven runs with the 9th inning about to start, I knew things didn't look too promising for the Rangers this time. But they did scramble for three in the ninth, and the final score was 11-7.

It definitely wasn't the game for Tex tonight anyways, since they made FOUR total defensive errors, two of which came by Vladdy in the 8th inning. He doesn't normally play the field, but since the game was in an NL park, where there is no DH, Ron Washington chose to start him in right field, knowing that Vlad still has a good throwing arm.

Darnit, the Gints have another ginormous scoring inning. This time it's the 8th inning. It was 2-0 SF entering the inning, but then they take advantage of poor Texas Ranger relief pitching (including 11 straight ball pitches thrown by Derek Holland) and bomb them with seven runs...most of which came with two out. And the Rangers couldn't score any runs of their own the entire game. They had an opportunity to bring in two (on second and third bases), but just left 'em there. Disappointing! :(

On the bright side, at least it wasn't the Yankees who made it all happen. (Even better, I'm glad they're not even in the picture.) Also, as somewhat of a consolation for me, the Gints are a California team, even though I normally root against 'em. (But if we had a rematch of the 1962 series, then by all means I would want SF to win.)

Yes, I know. And as I stated above, the bulk of it occurred in one inning. Just like in the first game. And most of that combined scoring came with two out.

...which they have started to do in tonight's game! Colby Lewis (who has been the winning pitcher in all of the Rangers' home game wins this postseason) went 7 2/3 innings and got 4 runs of support, all of which came by means of home runs. First a 3-run blast by Mitch Moreland, then a solo shot by Joshua Hamilton. Neftali Feliz (who hadn't pitched since striking out A-Rod to win the pennant last Friday night) achieved his first postseason save in the 9th inning.

...No such luck, darn it! >:( The first base umpire made two bad calls tonight at first base, both of which favored the Giants. First, a Giants runner was called safe when he was clearly out, then a Rangers baserunner was called out when he clearly beat the throw. The Rangers just could not get a good break tonight.

Even worse, the Rangers could not score any runs tonight, let alone get a runner past second base. Only one TEX runner got to second base, but they had no XBH tonight. They laid a goose egg as Madison BUMgarner pitched 8 strong innings.

Oh, and just for the record, the Rangers were shut out at their home ballpark only once during the regular season, and that was a 5-0 defeat at the hands of the Oakland A's on August 28th.

Texas is in trouble now.

Yup. :(

Unless Cliff Lee can return to his old self tomorrow, it's all over for them. Also, they've never won a game in AT&T Park. (All those years of interleague play, whenever the Rangers were scheduled to play on the road against the Gints, they've been swept.) I hope that can change on Wednesday night. They gotta win tomorrow night first.

It's all over. Who'da thunk it? San Francisco Giants = World Series Champions?

Cliff Lee was doing fine tonight, up until the 7th inning when he issued a 3-run home run to eventual WS MVP Edgar Renteria. There were two on and two out, with first base open; I'm sure fans are wondering what would have happened if they'd given Renteria the IBB and pitched to the next batter. That was the difference in the game.

Well...I am kinda bummed that the Gints won it, but they hadn't won a World Series since they were in New York, and to my consolation they are now a California team. They played well, the Giants starters pitched well in the postseason, as did their bullpen. Hey, even after the game was won, Cody Ross even congratulated the Texas Rangers on-screen for making it this far.

Personally I think my beloved L.A. Dodger team could use some better starting pitching. I do know that they're keeping Ted Lilly, who was pretty decent since being traded from the Cubs.

Win/loss record means very little in the grand scheme of evaluating a pitcher.
