Subject: 2011-12 in Dutch soccer

Written By: Bobo on 06/22/11 at 6:32 pm

Maybe this is too early. At least I won't let this one go dormant... I see Eredivisie fixtures have been announced for the 2011-12 season. AZ and PSV face off in the first week of the season, while Twente kick off at NAC. Promoted side RKC kick off at home against Heracles,

Almere City remain in the Eerste Divisie, as it appears that RBC have dissolved. FC Oss promote to the Eerste Divisie in place of IJsselmeervogels, who opt to remain an amateur side.

Seven new managers in the top flight, and seven in the second tier.

Altogether now. I will pay attention to what's going on...

One construction worker was killed today and 15 others were injured following the collapse of reconstruction works on the stands of the FC Twente stadium. :( At this point it isn't clear what caused the collapse.

A fair wadge of friendlies which I have missed. On Tuesday three Dutch teams (Feijenoord, NEC, Roda) put 24 goals past their Hoofdklasse opponents.

AZ beat non-league Belgian side Maldegem 0 - 6 last night.

A second construction worker has succumbed to his wounds. :\'(

The FC Twente Open Day, scheduled for July 17th, has been cancelled - for obvious reasons.

Here's a picture of the collapsed stadium:

Tomorrow night, in the first Eerste Divisie fixtures of the season, Willem II kick off against BV Veendam - the previous time the two teams met, they shared nine goals. Why do I get the feeling that it'll either be a 0 - 0 draw or a 13 - 0 Veendam victory? :D

It could (should?) have been so much more for Willem II, seeing how they scored twice within the first 7 minutes of the game.

But joking aside, Willem II should become champions of Eerste Divisie this season hands down.

Which makes Feyenoord the first team to top the table.

Champions League Qualifier Match (first leg)

FC Twente 2 - 2 SL Benfica

Twente were off with a good start, taking an early lead thanks to a 6th minute goal, but sloppy defense cost them dearly. Thankfully a late equalizer by Ruiz saved the day.
That said, it's gonna be hard (if not impossible) for Twente to qualify for group stage. :(

Yes yes, we finally did it: scoring double digits in an international qualifier. :D Until yesterday, the record stood at 9 to 0 (against Norway and Finland, in some distant past).

I must say, I was extremely frustrated after the first half, when we were leading by just 3 to 0. The Dutch squad had achieved this after only 17 minutes of play, but failed to push through for the final 25 minutes of the first half. I certainly wasn't expecting them to score another 8 in the second half.

Not a lot of surprises in KNVB Beker this year, unless you want to call (amateur side) Berkum's victory over (Eerste Divisie side) Veendam a surprise. Then again, Veendam...hardly Ajax, is it?

On another front: RBC Roosendaal (who went belly-up earlier this year) are planning on returning as an amateur side. :) They were hoping for a place in Hoofdklasse, but instead they'll be starting in...Fifth Division! :o Needless to say RBC officials are far from pleased and have announced to be challenging this KNVB decision.

AZ 2 - 1 Feijenoord
De Graafschap 2 - 3 Groningen
Excelsior 0 - 2 Vitesse
RKC 2 - 0 NEC

And so, after 7 rounds of play, AZ are the fourth team (I think) to top the table this season.

RKC Waalwijk continue to impress, still holding on to 7th position on the table.
De Graafschap hand away a certain (albeit not deserved) victory, after going 2 - 1 up with minutes left to play.
At the bottom of the table, Excelsior are still waiting for their first win of the season.

I've never heard of Henk Hofs, but then he didn't get to play much either. He played for Vitesse (like his brother Bennie and his nephew Nicky) from 1970 to 1972. He was forced to retire at an early age because of the state of his knees. In fact, it was complications after knee replacement surgery that eventually caused his death.

Another weekend gone...and no real surprises this time (unless you want to call AZ handing away a 0 - 2 lead over Ajax just that).

Some trivia:
Excelsior Rotterdam have only 2 points from 9 games - their worst competition start ever.
Both Excelsior and VVV Venlo are still awaiting their first win of the season.
Swedish striker John Guidetti (Man. City, but hired out to Feyenoord) has scored four times so far - all four from the penalty spot.

This week coming, I believe we have some third round KNVB Beker games. Amongst the mixed-league games, Heerenveen and Harkemase Boys are in a rematch of their club friendly earlier in the season, while Zwolle, in a good surge of form in the Eerste Divisie, are up against RKC, who have lost their last three Eredivisie games.

Don't worry - it took more than ten seconds of finding, so I don't blame you! :D And as for May '76, my memories of that time are pretty non-existent, too, so I wouldn't worry! :D

Nothing lost there, except for the match (obviously). Still every chance of making it to the EC - although we really have to improve on our play.

Meanwhile, at the Ajax headquarters... Louis van Gaal is appointed technical director. Apparently this was decided behind the back of Johan Cruyff, major Ajax icon and one of the most influential board members. Cruyff was/is not pleased, to say the least: the two don't see eye to eye.

The event was Euro 1996. The opponent was England (and we lost 4 to 1 - which just got us through to the next round!).

The turmoil continues... ::) Johan Cruyff and ten Ajax coaches have announced going to court over the appointment of Louis van Gaal. They consider his appointment to be illegit.
Cruyff is also quoted to have said that "the only reason why Edgar Davids (a fellow board member of Ajax) ever was appointed is the fact that he is black". Not helping...

Ajax 0 - 3 Real Madrid

And that wouldn't have been such a bad thing per se, had it not been for Olympique de Lyon trashing Dinamo Zagreb 7 to 1 (away win!). :o
Now it's Lyon proceeding in Champions League, whereas Ajax have to settle for Europa League.

The Zagreb vs Lyon game is being investigated, on suspicion of foul play, after a Zagreb defender was caught winking to a Lyon player.
My guess is that nothing can be proven (as usual).

Another result that I nearly missed:

Excelsior Rotterdam 0 - 0 AZ Alkmaar

This game had been cancelled at half time a couple of weeks ago (thickening fog), and last Wednesday the remainder was played.
Not a very good result for AZ, who remain top of the table nontheless and even increase their lead over PSV.

AZ are still top of the table, but their lead has been minimalized to 1 point (over PSV). And with Ajax and Feyenoord also winning, it's getting more and more exciting at the top end.
At the bottom of the table, however...not so much. Excelsior lose again, and so do VVV.

Match abandoned as keeper kicks fan

Unprecedented in Dutch soccer. We'll have to wait and see what happens next. I predict it's either one of these two:

- remainder of the match will be played later as we left it, with AZ down to 10 men and trailing 1 to 0.
- the entire match will be replayed, with both teams back to full strength (although the red card for Esteban will still stand - there's no excuse for his behavior).

For both options I expect there will be no crowd allowed, however. And no matter what, Ajax will be charged a considerable fine. 'Fans' are not supposed to be able to reach the pitch, let alone harrass the players!

Was the 'fan' hung drawn and quartered?

He was acting in self defense, as several jurists pointed out. Maybe he used excessive force, but that was justifiable, given the extreme circumstances. (I'm only repeating what jurists say)

KNVB have adopted a similar point of view, because they've decided to drop all charges - which also means the red card is being revoked.

KNVB has ruled...

There will be a replay, on January 19, behind closed doors (so no fans allowed in). Both teams start with 11 players and all charges are dropped.

Winner of the match will be facing.... amateur side GVVV in next round.

Does the one goal that was scored still credited to whichever player it was to his goal scoring career?

I can't help but bring up the fact that a friend redirected me to this story. VVV sign 18 month old.

So I guess in 18 years time we will be seeing van der Meij on VVV's scoresheets - I wonder if the team's youngest players, Musa, Udegbe, v. d. Ban, will still be playing football at that time? :D

Co Adriaanse is no longer coach of FC Twente. He and the team have decided to go separate ways. Apparently there was no chemistry between the team on one side and Adriaanse on the other. In spite of this, the team are still doing well in national competition (3rd place) and Europa League.

Former England boss Steve McClaren has revealed FC Twente's ambition persuaded him return to Holland. "I came back because of the ambition of the people, the ambition of the club. It was a good opportunity at Forest, but I wasn't given the tools to do the job."

McLaren has already stated that it is his ambition to go for the Dutch championship (which would be the second for FC Twente and for him). As I said earlier, Twente are currently in 3rd place, so everything is still possible.

KNVB Beker results (quarter finals):

Vitesse Arnhem 1 - 2 sc Heerenveen

AZ Alkmaar      2 - 1 GVVV Veenendaal
Heracles Almelo 3 - 0 RKC Waalwijk

A valiant effort by GVVV (the only remaining amateur side) against #3 seed in Eredivisie. They even took the lead in the 10th minute of the game, but it wasn't to be. So again, no amateur side(s) make it to semi finals.

One match still to go (tonight).

February 4
Excelsior Rotterdam 3 - 1 VVV Venlo

February 5
Ajax Amsterdam      0 - 2 FC Utrecht
Heracles Almelo      1 - 1 PSV Eindhoven
NEC Nijmegen          0 - 2 Feyenoord Rotterdam
FC Groningen          0 - 3 RKC Waalwijk

February 8
ADO Den Haag        0 - 6 AZ Alkmaar

And with that, AZ and PSV are both holding top position (tied in points, but PSV have a slightly better goal difference).
FC Twente have one match in hand, and should they win they'll also level with AZ and PSV.

For the first time this season (well, actually even longer than that), Feyenoord now proceed arch rivals Ajax in Eredivisie.

Well, I think The Netherlands slightly had the upper hand. At least they tried to make an effort...England would've gotten more than they deserved with a draw, IMO.

Sad news coming from Poland today...

Wlodzimierz 'Wlodi' Smolarek has died in his sleep, at the age of 54. :\'( Smolarek was a former player of Feyenoord (1988-1989, 13 goals) and FC Utrecht (1989-1996, 165 appearances, 33 goals). After his successful career as a player, he became a youth trainer with Feyenoord (1996-2009) and subsequently joined the Polish football association until his untimely death.
Smolarek also played for the Polish national team (60 caps, 13 goals), and as such took part in the 1982 and 1986 World Cups.
Smolarek is the father of ADO Den Haag striker Ebi Smolarek.

In a cruel twist of fate, Feyenoord and FC Utrecht will be facing each other this Sunday in Eredivisie.

Crazy things happening in Eredivisie. One week FC Twente thrash PSV, next week they make a faux-pas against NEC.

Now it's AZ Alkmaar back at the top of the table, with Ajax only three points behind.
FC Twente, PSV and sc Heerenveen are four points behind, but Twente still have a game in hand.

Things are starting to look grim for PSV coach Fred Rutten...

I don't think it's been mentioned, but there will be no team relegating from Eerste Divisie/Jupiler League at the end of the season  (which is good news for teams like FC Almere and SC Veendam).
None of the teams in Topklasse have shown interest in promotion to Eerste Divisie (mainly to do with the fact that they are obliged to contract a certain amount of professionals in the case of promotion).

We've had a midweek round of play in Eredivisie, and it looks like Ajax are the big winners (0 - 5 win over sc Heerenveen). They're now three points ahead of AZ (a 2 - 2 draw against FC Twente, who remain 3rd).
PSV dropped to 5th place due to a 2 - 1 loss against RKC Waalwijk.
Feyenoord move up one place (to 4), in spite of a goalless draw against Roda JC.
sc Heerenveen are still in 6th place, but due to their loss the gap between them and Ajax has increased to 7 points.

Maybe it's too early to tell, but it looks like Ajax will claim the title second time in a row. On the other hand, if RKC beat PSV... ::)

Ajax are now leading the table by 6 points. I don't see them losing twice (and even if they do, they still have the best goal difference of the entire field), so I think it's a run race.

As for second place...that's a lot more interesting! Five teams still in play, and they're only ONE point apart! :o

Oh, and FTR: FC Zwolle are champions of Jupiler League and will be playing Eredivisie next season (after 8 years of absence). Rumor has it they will be going by PEC Zwolle next season - a name the team also used in their heydays (1970s). Not sure if that will keep them from relegation, but it's worth a try.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think it is three yellow cards = one game suspension. Or two, possibly. :-\\
Unless of course you receive two yellow cards in one game. That means red, and you're suspended straight away (number of games depends on the graveness of the fouls committed).

Knobel's career as coach of the Dutch national squad (1974-1976) and Ajax (August 1973 - April 1974) were both shortlived and not very successful, although we did end up in 3rd place at the European Championship in 1976. (We didn't win the tournament until 1988)

Well, regular season has come to an end. Time for play-offs!

Let's see... Ajax are champions, and qualify for Champions League. (I'm not expecting them to survive first round)
Feyenoord are the surprise runners-up, and qualify for Champions League qualifiers.

PSV, AZ and sc Heerenveen (numbers 3, 4 and 5 respectively) qualify for Europa League.

FC Twente, Vitesse, N.E.C. and RKC (#s 6 to 9) battle it out for one remaining spot in Europa League.

Excelsior Rotterdam ends in last place, and relegates directly.

VVV Venlo and De Graafschap end 16th and 17th respectively, and face play-offs to prevent relegation.

Now here's when it gets a bit awkward...

Based on the UEFA Fair Play Rankings over the past Europa/Champions League season, we (i.e. The Netherlands) have earned an extra slot in Europa League. This place will go to the highest ranked team in Dutch Fair Play rankings over the past season, excluding teams that a) have already qualified for Europa/Champions League, and b) did not play in Eredivisie in 2011/2012 season.
Winners of 2011/2012 Fair Play rankings are sc Heerenveen - but they've already qualified for Europa League.
Second best ranked team is FC Twente, which should earn them a place in Europa League. BUT HERE'S THE CATCH!
Should FC Twente win play-offs for Europa League ticket, the extra ticket goes to... Excelsior Rotterdam! :o
If FC Twente fails to win play-offs, they get the extra ticket.

Get it?

Well, it is confusing.

Updates needed on the play-offs...

Promotion/Relegation play-offs

Round 2, leg 1 (May 10th)
FC Den Bosch - De Graafschap    0 - 0
Willem II - Sparta Rotterdam      2 - 1
sc Cambuur - VVV Venlo            0 - 0
Helmond Sport - FC Eindhoven    1 - 0

Europa League play-offs

Round 1, leg 1 (May 10th)
N.E.C. Nijmegen - Vitesse Arnhem 3 - 2
RKC Waalwijk - FC Twente          1 - 1

And the returns:

De Graafschap - FC Den Bosch  1 - 1
Sparta Rotterdam - Willem II    1 - 1
VVV-Venlo - sc Cambuur          4 - 3
FC Eindhoven - Helmond Sport  0 - 2

Vitesse Arnhem - N.E.C. Nijmegen 2 - 0
FC Twente - RKC Waalwijk          0 - 1

As a result, De Graafschap are (also) relegated from Eredivisie.
Willem II will now take on FC Den Bosch, and VVV will take on Helmond Sport for two spots in Eredivisie.

Vitesse and RKC will battle it out for one remaining spot in Europa League.
In spite of their loss, FC Twente still qualify for Europa League due to their Fair Play ranking over the last season. This also means that Excelsior Rotterdam do not qualify for that spot.

Thanks to two late goals, the Dutch U-17 squad beat their Georgian counterparts in the semi-final of the European Championship earlier tonight.
The Dutch will now be facing Germany in the final - a repeat of last year's final (won by The Netherlands).

UEFA U-17 Championship Final:

The Netherlands 1 - 1 Germany (The Netherlands win after penalties, 5-4)

Well that was close...We nearly got one in in the first half, but it was still goalless at half time. Then, in the second half, the Germans took control of the game, which led to a goal in the 51st minute. And that seemed to be the end of it... Until the penultimate minute of the game, when out of the blue we scored the equalizer.
So penalties it was (no extra time), and one penalty was stopped by the Dutch goalie. That left the Germans in tears (for a change).

EURO 2012 RESULT

The Netherlands 0 - 1 Denmark

We're all in shock right now. This is the one game "we" couldn't lose - a sure win! But one goal by Michael Krohn Dehli, and all has changed. It's not that we didn't get any chances, but our attackers failed to deliver.
On the bright side: we now know exactly where we stand and what we're supposed to do. Two games remaining in this group, and we can't afford another loss. But with the opponents being Germany and Portugal... :-\\
Well, if past experience is anything to go by: the only time we lost our opening game at a European Championship was in 1988. And I'm sure you remember what happened next...

You seem to be taking the well-trodden English path...making things difficult for yourselves! This has to stop immediately!  ;)

Sure do (and certainly not one of our better tournaments!)  :-X

I'd hate to lose you in the groups and I don't think Germany's quite the team they've been hyped-up to be!...so knuckle down!

I'm not at all convinced with England's opener...France to win by the odd goal (or two)...

I'm not entirely optimistic... :(
If we fail to qualify for the next round, that would be a first in 32 years. Last time we didn't get through the group stage on any major tournament was in 1980.

That's not counting the times we weren't even there in the first place... (1982, 1984, 1986, 2002) ::)
From memory, it was France (1982), Spain (1984), Belgium (1986) and Republic of Ireland (!) (2002) that kept us from qualifying in those respective years. I can still hear the tv commentary and feel the pain/disappointment...

Second Dutch result of Euro 2012:

Netherlands 1 - 2 Germany

This, worryingly, does two things - puts the Netherlands at the bottom of the group, with no points and just a single goal from their first two games, and secondly, makes it possible for them to *qualify* with a decent win over Portugal as long as Germany beat Denmark.

Anything is possible I suppose!

Anything is possible I suppose!

What we need to do:
Go fully on the attack from the get-go, put in three (or more) in the first 30 minutes of the game - and job well done.

What will happen (most likely):
Nothing of the sort. It'll be much the same as the Germany and Denmark games, which leads to nothing. And to make matters worse, Portugal will score one or two and the other game ends in a draw (leaving all our desperate attempts futile).
Afterwards every Dutch player will claim they "played to win" and "put in their best effort" and so on and so on. Bert van Marwijk will resign then offer his resignation, but both players and KNVB will reject.
And so we will muddle on, towards WC 2014 - but we will fail to qualify (following dramatic results against Hungary and Estonia).

And the final nail in the coffin, Portugal 2 - 1 Netherlands. Van der Vaart scored after 11 minutes, but Ronaldo, with a 28th minute equalizer and a 74th minute winner, turned the game around.

As predicted. Nice of Germany to do the honorable thing and win, but it was lost on us. We just weren't good enough this time/tournament.
Now anxiously awaiting Van Marwijk's resignation...

I think it's time. With us being eliminated from Euro 2012, the 2011/2012 season is officially over.

August will also see the next international friendly for us, against Belgium. Now if we can't even win that we'll know where we're heading. ;)
