That's what I've heard too. I'm sad to see him go, especially since I've no idea who's to replace him.

The most worrying thing about this season? Willem II may be top of the table at the end of the first day of the season. And we all remember what happened last time that was the case...

Emmen were not relegated from the Eerste Divisie last season, despite finishing bottom of the table, as all the potential candidates for promotion from Topklasse refused promotion to the second tier.


So far the new regulations for promotion to/relegation from Eerste Divisie have not been very useful. Not so much because the (semi) amateur sides in Topklasse don't want to, but more because of the financial issues coming with promotion.

That's what I've heard too. I'm sad to see him go, especially since I've no idea who's to replace him.


Van Marwijk is one of the most successful coaches we've had. Of the 52 games the Dutch squad played under his guidance, 34 were won. Only one coach did even better (Van Basten, with 35 wins in 52 games), but oddly I don't see anyone mention his name as a possible replacement.

FTR: there is one Dutch coach with a 100% score to his name: Rob Baan. Then again, he only was coach for 2 games... ::)

Uh-oh! According to the game report, the Albanian referee made a terrible error in showing the Andorran player a second yellow. Apparently he got two players mixed up.

KNVB have announced they've found a successor to Bert van Marwijk, who stepped down as coach of the Dutch national squad a couple of weeks ago. The new man is Louis van Gaal. He will be officially installed as per August 1.

Van Gaal has led the Dutch squad before (from September 2, 2000 to November 10, 2001), but resigned when Oranje failed to qualify for World Cup 2002.

I'm utterly disappointed. I wouldn't say we're doomed, but the chances of us making WC 2014 in Brazil have suddenly decreased with at least 50%. :(

I'm giving it a year. By then, I predict we're third in our group (behind Turkey and Hungary) and Van Gaal is given the sack. In a desperate attempt to save qualification, KNVB reappoints Bert van Marwijk, but even he can't help us out.

Of all possible choices, Van Gaal is probably second to bottom on my list (the bottom choice being Johan Cruyff). Wherever he goes, he leaves chaos, mayhem and mass confusion. But it's never his fault... ::)

It's fall... Leaves are falling, and heads are rolling. :D John Karelse (of NAC Breda) is the first coach this season to lose his job. Following the 0 - 3 defeat against Vitesse this weekend, NAC Breda are currently 17th (penultimate) in tables. Apparently, that's not good enough... ::)

Other news that I completely forgot to mention:

As of 2015/2016 season, there will be a significant change in the promotion/relegation system. Currently, the overall champion of Topklasse can opt for promotion to Eerste Divisie. As of 2015/2016 season, the promotion is no longer optional, but obligatory. As a consequence, the number last in Eerste Divisie at the end of 2015/2016 season will also relegate automatically to Topklasse.

One match, VVSB v. HBS, was suspended after 52 minutes due to bad weather conditions.

And with that, both Ajax and Feyenoord are now 10 points behind leaders FC Twente.
PSV hold on to second place (only one point behind) while Vitesse and FC Utrecht claim 3rd and 4th place respectively. The latter two are doing surprisingly well - something that can't be said of teams like FC Groningen and sc Heerenveen (10th and 12th place).

VVV Venlo claim their first win of the season (away at AZ Alkmaar, no less) and are now level with Willem II at the bottom of the table.

PSV are scoring like crazy. They're currently at 48 from 13 games. At this rate, they'll break the record of 122 goals in one season, held by Ajax.

No action on the soccer pitches these weeks. About halfway through the season, PSV are what the Germans call Herbstmeister. Will they be able to hold on to that position until the end of the season? We'll have to wait and see.

Meanwhile, in Eerste Divisie, AGOVV Apeldoorn are given a 2-point penalty for failing to pay in time.

I've been so busy over Christmas that things are only just starting to calm down again..! Eredivisie returns on January 18, Eerste Divisie returns on January 17, Topklasse returns on January 12.

Former (assistant) coach of Oranje Jan Zwartkruis has died last Thursday. He was 87 years old.

Zwartkruis (co-) led the Dutch national squad from 1976 to 1981. Originally appointed for only two games, his contract was extended for another two games. After that, Ernst Happel was appointed head coach with Zwartkruis as his assistant. The two led Oranje to the 1978 World Cup final (that was lost against Argentina). Subsequently, Zwartkruis was appointed head coach again, and under his guidance Oranje qualified for the European Championships of 1980. Those championships did not end well for The Netherlands, and with the following qualifications for WC 1982 also going abismal, Zwartkruis resigned.

Zwartkruis was remembered as "a gentle man off the field, but very strict and demanding in training", probably due to his background in the military.

Something that was bound to happen sooner or later:

SC Veendam has been declared bankrupt. The team will be withdrawn from Eerste Divisie as per now. All previous results will probably be declared null and void.

Following the demise of HFC Haarlem, RBC Roosendaal and AGOVV Apeldoorn, Veendam are the fourth team to disappear (as a result of bankruptcy) from Eerste Divisie since 2010. There are now 16 teams left in Eerste Divisie, of which at least one (FC Emmen) is also struggling to survive.

And so, with three rounds of play left, it's Ajax leading the table, with a 4-point margin over PSV and Feyenoord. In theory, anything is still possible, but my guess is it's gonna be Ajax in the end.

Meanwhile, at the bottom of the table, Willem II hang on for dear life. Their win over Roda JC brings them within three points of a relegation/promotion play-off ticket, instead of straightforward relegation. Who knows...it ain't over till it's over!

Although, with matches against Vitesse and Ajax (both away) still coming up for Willem II, it does seem rather unlikely they'll manage to escape direct relegation. :(
