Subject: Corruption In Tennis

The organisation tackling the threat of match-fixing in tennis received 48 alerts of unusual or suspicious betting activity in the first quarter of 2016 - up from 31 in the same period of 2015. The Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) got one alert from a match at the Australian Open and one from the WTA Tour. The rest concerned matches at Futures and Challenger level. The TIU, which is publishing figures after evidence of suspected fixing was revealed in January, says alerts are not always indications of wrongdoing.

I'm not sure if this signifies corruption in the professional Tennis circuit in any way, but women apparently tend to have lighter tennis balls than men do and they receive far less prize money than the men. There could very likely be good reasons for this, but I just think it should be noted.

A French tennis player has been suspended for seven months and fined $10,000 (£7,698) after being found guilty of betting on 220 matches.
World number 164 Constant Lestienne committed the offences between February 2012 and June 2015.
The Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) said none of the matches involved Lestienne, who is yet to win an ATP title.
Half of the 24-year-old's ban is suspended "on condition of no further offences", the TIU said.
His fine will also be halved if he "gives assistance" - which can include with anti-corruption education for other players - to the TIU.
The TIU was set up in September 2008 to combat betting-related corruption in tennis.
It is a joint venture between the International Tennis Federation (ITF), WTA, ATP and the Grand Slam Board, which oversees the sport's four majors.

Tennis investigators are examining whether a match at this year's Wimbledon was fixed after suspicious betting patterns were reported. The Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU), which was set up in 2008 to detect any corruption, has not revealed which match it is investigating. The TIU is already investigating a US Open first-round match between Vitalia Diatchenko and Timea Bacsinszky. "Both are the subject of routine, confidential investigation," it said.

The number of suspicious betting patterns in tennis is on the rise and is a "concern", says the first annual report published by the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU). In 2016, nine players and officials were sanctioned as a result of TIU disciplinary investigations.
