They'd probably have to specify a new location in such a short notice of time. I hope the games can be played. :o

Russia's weightlifting team has been banned from competing at the Rio Olympics because of doping offences.
Individual sport federations must rule on whether Russians can compete in Rio following the country's doping scandal.
Two of the eight-strong weightlifting team had already been banned for prior violations, and another four were named in the McLaren report into the issue.
Russia's Sports Minister said 272 of the original 387 athletes selected had been cleared to complete in Rio.

The Olympic Games so far turn out rather disappointing for Team NL.
There's been little to no success in the swimming pool and on the tatami - this in spite of all the optimism beforehand.
Also no medal for the team dressage, where we've been a top contender for the last 25 years.

And then there's the ruckus about Yuri van Gelder... A finalist on the rings, but he was sent home by team management because of breaking rules and regulations and being a nuisance to other (Dutch) athletes. Van Gelder (33), who already missed out on the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics as well for various reasons, tried to get his way by taking the case to court, but he was put in the wrong.

Ah well, there's some good news as well: the gold medals for Anna van der Breggen (cycling, women's road race), Maaike Head and Ilse Paulis (women's rowing) and Dorian van Rijsselberghe (men's windsurfing). Not as much as we hoped for at this stage, but there's still time.

Three days later, and things are looking quite different now. We've added five more gold to our tally:

- an unexpected gold for Elis Ligtlee on the women's keirin (that's some sort of track cycling, if you're unfamiliar with the sport).
- gold medals for Sharon van Rouwendaal and Ferry Weertman in the 10km Open Water Swimming.
- also gold for Marit Bouwmeester in the Laser-Radial class (sailing).
- and last but not least: gold for Sanne Wevers on the balance beam. Never before has a Dutchwoman won a gold medal in gymnastics.*

And the good news is: there's still everything to play for! We've got teams in semi-finals in hockey (both men and women), handball (women), volleyball (women) and beach volleyball (men). We've also got a finalist in the women's 1500m (Sifan Hassan), and we've got Dafne Schippers (for the women's 200m) and maybe Churandy Martina (for the men's 200m). And then there's also BMX (cycling) still to come...

* No disrespect to the women who won the Group Excercise in the 1928 Olympics, but those were entirely different times and entirely different gymnastics.

April Ross and Walsh Jennings lost in the semi-final to the Brazilians last night and won't be qualifying for gold this year  :(

However, they can still get the bronze medal though.

She's done alright on all the events she's been in.  Well built and muscly isn't she?  The GB cyclists look weedy next to her.

gold medals for Sharon van Rouwendaal and Ferry Weertman in the 10km Open Water Swimming.

I thought van Rouwendaal was going to lose out at the last moment when the boat got in her view of the finish.  She went quite out of her line and I thought the others might catch her.

Yes she has, and yes she is. And I'm ever so proud that she won an event (just about the only event not won by Team GB, I think)!

I must admit I haven't seen any of the swimming events (be it in the pool or in the open water). Most of those were held while we were on vacation, and believe it or not: there was no television in our accommodation!

Well... the men's hockey team lost their semi-final against Belgium (1 - 3). That was quite a bleak and somewhat lethargic performance. And they didn't do much better in the Bronze Medal match: a 1 - 1 draw against Germany (with luck on the Dutch side), but losing on shootouts. So no medal for TeamNL there.

The women's hockey team are through to the final, though, beating Germany after shootouts (that was tense!). Now they'll be facing TeamGB for the top spot.

Handball and volleyball are still underway as we speak.

The beach volleyballers Brouwer and Meeuwsen were beaten by the Brazilian team in their semi-final, although the difference was marginal. All that's left for them is a bronze medal match.

Sifan Hassan finished 5th in the 1500m. She was disappointed with herself - so much so that she was losing sleep over it, and subsequently failed to qualify for the 800m semi-finals the next day. Poor girl!

Dafne Schippers won a silver medal in her 200m race yesterday. I'm sure some of you have seen that happening.
Did you know that she is one of only FIVE Dutch athletes alive to have won a medal in track and field events in the Olympics?!?
In all, there have been only 17 Dutch athletes who have won an Olympic medal in track and field events in the entire history of modern Olympics. One could say that, quite literally, the Dutch have only a one-in-a-million chance of winning a medal in track and field events!

Churandy Martina stunned everyone (including Justin Gatlin) by finishing second in his semi-final, thus securing a place in the final later today. It is his third consecutive Olympic final on the 200m dash, an achievement he shares with... Usain Bolt!

BMX racing is on the way as well. All three men and two women are still in the race for a medal.
