Subject: The 'After Serious Weather' - "I'm Alright" thread

Written By: Tam on 02/06/08 at 6:32 pm

I know, the title is a little lame but I couldn't really come up with anything else.

Basically, after you and yours have weathered some serious storms, tornadoes, hurricanes etc. you can come here and just let us know all is well with you.

I was prompted to do this mostly because when I hear about tornado possibilities in the Chicago area, I worry about Rice, Jess and The Spawn. When I heard about flooding in Ohio, I worried about Brian. When there were threats of a hurricane hitting Houston, I worried about JoeDeerTae. When I heard about tornadoes yesterday through the mid west, Tennessee esp. I worry about WindBreaker05....

So ya - holla and let us know alright! ;)

Nah, but seriously, we got some nasty storms here last night, rattled the whole house but no damage anywhere, just a few counties south they had a couple people dead though.

Where does she live?  I live in Knoxville Tn and for the past 3 days we got rain, today a lot of wind , some other days too.  If she lives in Nasville, we usually get their weather.

Nice post...keep tabs on people.  :)

The snow tonight was thick.  I drove down Hwy 401 super slow, not by choice, but because I was following a slow moving convoy of Transports that were behind a snowplow

I need to start listening to the local weather more.  I was very surprised this afternoon when the lady across the road mentioned that the evening gym classes were cancelled because of the weather.  It wasn't snowing or anything at that time.  Turns out James's class was still on but the place was shutting at 5.30.  It started snowing around 6.00

To add to listening or watching the weather Karen, I always go to www.weather.com, pu tin my zip code and it will tell me everything I want to know. From current to 10 days, it will try and tell me what to expect, how to dress, and of course, how to re-check it to make sure nothing or something has changed! ;D 8)

Finally got my cable back tonight. Been out since yesterday.

Tuesday night we had a crazy storm, they are still studying the debris in my neighborhood to see if it was a tornado.
Last night we had three storms roll in one after another. First one had 2 tornadoes in it, about 16-17 miles west of us. The other two had golf ball size hail and tons of rain. We are good though and eagerly awaiting our departure from Texas!

Dealing with tropical storm Fay, had no electric for 12 hours. Thanks God it came back on at about 2:30 this afternoon.
My daughter lives about 40 miles south of here, and they got 25 inches of rain. My son got his car stuck and they had to push it out.
She lives in a town home which has two stories, the water came up her sidewalk but not in the house.
Everyone is fine though, we are getting the worse of it right now. Not as bad as down in Palm Bay, not nearly as much rain, but lots of wind.
This has been a weird storm, they usually weaken overland but since this one moved so slow and was over the everglades it got stronger, Now it is out to sea, and is expected to come back on shore.
My dog is afraid to go outside to do her business!!!! I guess she will be spending someime on the backporch. It is protected but has astroturf so it would be easy to clean up any accidents.

I'm allright.  The Worcester area got destroyed by an ice storm Thursday night/Friday morning.  Fortunately, it didn't hit my office 15 miles to the south in Southbridge, and I have all of the above plus Internet access at my workplace.  I sent Susan and Neal to her parents house 20 miles to the east where they also didn't get hit.

I spent Thursday night listening to trees snapping in half and dropping branches.  It's been 36 hours since I've had electricity/light/water.  Very weird how narrow an area it hit. Where it did hit though, every 50 feet or so there's a line from the phone polls on the ground, or a giant tree limb hanging on it.  They're talking Monday or even longer before the power comes back on.  I've been sleeping at the house (with a ton of blankets on me) just to make sure nothing bad happens to the house.  Drained all the pipes last night.

Really kicking myself at the moment because my generator is totally broken and has been for a long time.  I tried fixing it this spring and had to give up (the carb. jets are completely plugged and I can't break them free).  Susan authorized me to skip renting a beach house and invest in a quality backup generator ASAP. The generator I had wouldn't run the well anyways, so it's better to just give up on fixing it.  I doubt I'll fine one locally before the power comes back anyways.

The generator I had wouldn't run the well anyways, so it's better to just give up on fixing it.  I doubt I'll fine one locally before the power comes back anyways.

Glad to hear you got Susan and Neal somewhere safe and that your house is surviving so far.

We were lucky here - we got loads of rain but it was a few degrees above freezing so we just had some minor flooding.

Get that generator asap.  There was a Mass. based company advertising on Rock FM recently but I can't recall the name.

Drained all the pipes last night.

spent the day getting my old one running.  still wouldn't run the furnace.  Borrowed another tonight from someone else (thinking the old one was no good even though it runs now) with similar results.  Just going out of my mind at this point.

Glad to hear you are ok. I was wondering if you, Danoota, and/or Max were hit by the storm. Haven't heard from Max yet. (Danoota still has power.)

Keep warm and SAFE!!!!

Please be safe, Chucky.  I finally got to see some of what you were talking about earlier when I was able to catch some national news.  I saw Worcester on the news and thought of you, remembering your post.  I'm glad you sent Susan and Neal to safety, but still worried about you.  Keep the posts coming so we know you are ok.

Take care, and good luck- 2 years ago when the area was hit by an ice storm and some did not have power for 2 weeks.... I am feeling for you, take care

Thanks for letting us know chucky.
We obviously missed it, although they had said we were going to get hit as well. It got too cold here so we had tons of snow to deal with.
Sorry about the generators - perhaps your furnace is simply too much for a gen. to run?
Like everyone else, I am glad you got Susan and Neal to safety - but you need to take care of you too. Please stay warm and don't get sick.
Let us know if there is anything we can do.

turns out there was an issue with the wiring of the generator cross-over switch.  As a last ditch effort, I tried wiring it directly to the generator and surprise, it worked.  So I'm home with heat and a little power to run the PC now.  No water still (didn't even try to wire that too).  I still haven't gotten the house all the way up to room temperature, probably going to take a few more hours since the house was so cold to start with.  The heat just gets sucked into the furniture as the air gets warmer.

Last night was in the teens.  tonight it's almost 40 degrees, quite better.  Supposed to get cold again soon though.  I haven't even seen a power company crew on my street yet.  Probably going to be a few more days at least.

Excellent that you are finally getting some heat, even if it is only a little bit.
It warmed up here today and supposed to stay warmer through the night. I hope these temps come your way. Tuesday is when it is supposed to get bad for us again. Stay safe Chucky. Keeping you in my prayers!

just got my power back. I had it up to 77 this morning, I just let the heat blast all night to get the house warmed up.  Of course had I waited it would have happened anyways, it was 60 degrees this afternoon.  I'm still busy cleaning up the messes I created while trying to get the heat going.  Susan and Neal return tomorrow.  Tonight I focus on returning the borrowed generator and getting laundry done.  Tomorrow we go food shopping to replace everything that got ruined due to the lack of power.  An entire fridge worth.

That's excellent news Chucky.
Now about the food, I know when I went through the ice storm in '98 we claimed our food loss and such through our insurance. Not sure if that is an option for you but one you might look into.

Well, we had a pretty wacky storm a few nights ago, and it was cold, too. It even snowed in San Francisco for the first time in over 50 years. Our nearby mountain, Mt. Diablo, has also got a nice bit of snow on it's peak. I need to capture some pics of that tomorrow. It's still pretty cold out. Much colder than it usually is this time of year. It's often just in the late 40s/50s. Right now during the day, it's barely hitting 40F. It's 32F as I speak, so it's literally freezing out!  :o

I didn't notice the snow on the mountain on my way to work. it must have been enshrouded in cloud cover. my car was frozen this morning but it was actually warmer today when the sun came out, but it is cold now

Yeah, my car was freezed over, too! Even my doors were frozen over - very strange. I never saw that before. Yeah, the mountain seems like mother nature is doing a nice little number on Mt. D. Soon, (hopefully tomorrow) we can catch a glimpse of what she's done!  :)

We are supposed to be going down your way this weekend. (Sorry, can't stop on this trip-but there will be others). We are supposed to go down on Sat. and come back on Sun. I was hoping to go down tomorrow but the weather looks nasty. I really hope we can make this trip because I feel it is something that I NEED to do.

I just heard there will be more snow on Sunday  :-\\ and a chance of snow on Saturday.

The interstate might not be too bad.

Well, we just can't make this trip.  The car is buried - literally.  The roads are snow covered and it's still coming down.  Forecast is for snow all day and into Sunday.  Luckily I went shopping yesterday before it started.  By the time I got home though, the roads were covered.  Very bad.

We're getting hit by another ice storm today.  Already lost power once for a couple hours.  I of course had to set up the generator all over again because I had disconnected it to be safe.  Crossing my fingers nothing happens, because the conditions are pretty similar to the last time.

I've got a gigantic pine tree near my house that I just found out Monday has a big crack running down the middle, and might fall at some point.  Called up my brother's friend, got an estimate and told him to do it next week.  Just one more thing to waste money on, and worry about.  UGH!
