Subject: Me, coming out of the closet

Written By: 80sfan on 01/03/14 at 3:55 am

If moderators decide to delete this, then I would understand, but I decided to come out on inthe00s.com.

I'm not trying to get attention, I'm just trying to be myself more on this website. AND I'm also trying to not lie/be secretive.

Yes, I am gay. I knew since I was like 9. And though I know a lot of you aren't going to accept me, I hope a lot of you are! I'm not on here to hit on any of you men, so don't get all nervous around me. I'm respectful of everyone, women and men, so that's all I wanted to say!

I just don't want to pretend to be straight on this website, when I'm not. I've come to like most of you on here. Again, I know this is a sensitive issue, so I wouldn't blame moderator(s) if they delete this thread by the time I read this again.

To be honest, inthe00s.com, is more loose and free than a lot of websites. There are websites where if you don't post what vibes with the author's political/personal views/personal tastes, the comment is deleted or 'under watch'.

I've never posted anything racist, homophobic (duh), sexist, but if I post what seems to be an innocent joke, the post is blocked or deleted. The comments I made on those websites have nothing to do with my sexuality, but the owner of the site feels my silly personality doesn't 'fit' well with her/him, so they block it until I post something they like.

In all honesty, it's their website, their life, so they can do anything they want with it, but I can do anything I want with my life, and I choose not to post on those sites. Yikes, there are some close-minded people out there. Those people made me appreciate inthe00s more, although I can be silly on this site, it's never out of line, or rarely is!

Most websites are pretty accepting, like 85%? But you'd be surprised, there are still some very close minded people out there. Karma back.

Just wondering. Do you parents know? Have you told them? If you did..how did that go?
I know you have discussed on this site that there have been some difficulties with your parents, the way they treat you sometimes. If this is too personal of a question, let me know and please don't feel obliged to answer.

My parents do know. I came out about one month before I turned 18. It went well, they're pretty open. My mother is especially accepting of it, my dad still thinks marriage should be between a man and a woman, but is pretty accepting.

We get along fine now, but they're still themselves, you know!  ;D

Nothing wrong with being gay. My mother once told me that gay men make the best girlfriends.

Like a few have already said, glad you feel comfortable with us to tell us-but personally, I don't think it matters one way or another. I have always said that it is not a matter of WHAT you are but WHO you are that counts.

Glad you felt comfortable enough to share that :)

I am also gay. This thread makes me realize how different the coming out process can be for some people. I came out to my "internet friends" (on another website) before I came out to anyone in real life. I wasn't nervous at all to tell my online friends -- I knew they would accept me. If anything the only reason I hadn't told them a lot sooner was because I was paranoid the news would somehow spread to people in my personal life who I wasn't ready to have made aware of it yet. I also figured there was less to fear online than offline in terms of having to deal with people's potentially negative reactions. Thankfully I have never had anyone react negatively in neither my online life or my personal life.

Wow, you did the total opposite of me, like you said. I came out at 17. I'm 25, only now am I coming out online.

I came out at 20 (I'm 23 now). I should mention I started coming out to people in real life pretty much immediately after I told my online friends. For me, it was just so liberating. I realized I was gay when I was 13 and so I kept it a deep dark secret bottled up inside for 7 years because I was so afraid of my friends and especially family rejecting me. But once I gathered the nerve to tell the first set of people, it just became so easy to tell the others...it was like opening a floodgate. Almost 3 years later, I can't really think of too many people who I would hesitate to be honest about my sexuality with if it became relevant in discussion, except for maybe some relatives.

I had no idea you were gay. I'm not, but I am fine with those who are. Back in my freshman year of high school, I was in Drama Class and was assigned a role of a flamboyant gay man in the end of the school year play. I was so nervous because this role required me to act like a gay man that is feminine. Even though my part was only about 3 to 4 minutes long, I was a little anxious that people would think I was gay. Yes a few people did think I was gay and teased me about it for a long time after that but a majority of people knew it was just acting. Ever since that experience, I've been a big supporter of LGBT rights.

You know whats weird is that I went to a relatively large high school (there were about 700 kids in my graduating class) but I don't recall there being any out homosexuals. Therefore, I have no idea how gay students in my high school would have been treated. Actually now that I think about it there were definitely some kids who were very flamboyant and "dressed and acted gay" but I don't think they ever confirmed themselves that they were in fact gay. Regardless, they were taunted about it...

I'm surprised there was still taunting at school that recently. Why I say that is because during the 1990s I worked in a department where there were many gay men and (to my knowledge) no one was ever taunted or bugged and it really made no difference to any of us (except for 1 guy who quit because he was afraid a gay man would sexually attack him  ::))

I think the taunting would have been far worse when I went to school then when you (Mark) or 80s fan went to school. I graduated in 1980. Heck, people at our school got beat up for admitting they liked disco. (back then...admitting to liking disco meant you were probably gay...that's the way it was in the late 1970s in High School.)

My dad had that same attitude toward gay men.  He used to say they shouldn't be allowed in the military because he wouldn't feel safe in a foxhole with them.  My response (in my head only) was that he would be safe, they are gay not without taste. ;)

My high school was not as big as yours. There were some guys that had a lot of stereotypical gay traits like the way they talked and the way they dressed. It was no surprise to anyone when they came out after high school. But there was one or two guys that shocked people because these guys acted very masculine in high school.

The "anti-gay" attitude and the bullying of LGBT is really a result of how they were raised. If they were raised by parents who also disliked gays, they would grow up to be like that too.

I don't know how it's like over those 2 countries, but if they physically execute gays (hanging, shooting, electric chair, inject poison for you to die) I'd stay in the closet for personal safety. It may be because I'm thinking too extreme about those two countries, and it's not as bad as I think.

I am glad you do not need to/nor want to pretend to be someone your not!!!  Why would you!  I understand some may feel uncomfortable and not accepting.  But that is their loss in getting to know you for you!  If they liked you before, this doesn't change who you are!

No where do I see that should this thread have to come down.  Your post was not sexually suggestive, or explicit, and can probably start others to freely talk about this subject.

I think you've answered your own question.  It was the 80s, my high school was a bit smaller, but by no means did I live in what could be considered a redneck/fundamentalist region, and (at least the nerdy squares I hung out with) knew not a single "out" person in the school.  There were hushed rumors, of course, and the fact that they were hushed rumors was precisely the problem.  The person about whom the rumors were circulating was often unaware that there were even any rumors.  The fact that nobody was willing to address the rumor mill (one way or the other) made it a source of shame.

Funny 80s story:  There once was a time, well before the first dot-com boom, during which being a computer nerd rendered you undateable.  I was OK with that.  Computers were fascinating.  Problem was, spending weeks tracking down pirated copies of Soft Porn Adventure or hacking the bitmaps out of a Strip Poker binary didn't count as evidence of one's straightness outside one's own circle of nerdy friends (who didn't care one way or another, because the story of the crack was as interesting as the n00dz), because the people spreading the rumors didn't have computers!

It was an asinine way to go through high school as a straight person, and I'm grateful that fewer people every year have to worry about it.

I noticed after Ellen DeGeneres came out circa 1997, it was the beginning of people being more accepting of gay/lesbians. Maybe because I didn't grow up in the 80s, and don't remember the early 90s.

I think this could be chalked up to differences in maturity levels too. In a work environment where you're associating with mature adults, I would not expect to be bullied about my sexuality (though you never know). In high school, you're surrounded by immature teenagers who haven't quite learned to respect others and treat people how they want to be treated.

I should also note that those who were labeled gay and taunted about it, were mainly taunted behind their backs and also for the fact that these examples I'm thinking of were part of the despised emo subculture. They did things like wear skinny jeans ("girl pants") years before they became mainstream. I'm really struggling to imagine what it would have been like if someone from the "popular crowd" had come out of the closet in my high school and what the reactions would be like. Someone like me though? I wasn't popular but I wasn't nerdy or anything either. I was just kind of there/under the radar...therefore me coming out might not have made much of an impact, especially since like I said I went to a larger high school. Being in the closet, my fears about everyone turning on me may have been amplified by my own paranoia. Oh well, I'll never know, and I can't really say I have any regrets about waiting until college to come out :)

Even though I'm gay, I have quite masculine qualities. I have no problems with effeminate males and are friends with some, and will continue to be friends with many more in the future. But of course I prefer to be myself!

I think everyone has masculine & feminine qualities that have nothing to do with their sexuality. I have known guys who were very feminine who were heterosexual.

This. There are a few straight men that have strong feminine qualities. They're called metrosexuals. Which just means they are straight guys that pay a lot of attention to their hair, skin, and clothes.

gay friends.

Yes, one is either bisexual or closeted though. I caught him looking at other men in the way a man looks at beautiful women. It might be he's bisexual though. And it's none of my business to out somebody else, besides me.

One is a black friend I have. And another is out now, and in politics. I'm sure there are more, but they're not 'out' yet, or I just don't believe they're gay.  :-X

We may have crossed paths in the past, but probably not talked directly...

But you, sir, have my utmost admiration and you'll find this place is majorly accepting...

Now if you came out as a decadeologist...people would start the hate. :D

...apart from then!  ;)

I wish you every success and happiness in your life...(HUG)

I don't have a problem with anybody's sexuality. As long as they are happy with who they are with that's fine. I know this thread is old. I am throwing in my 2 cents. That's it.

There are other members here who have a different sexual persuasion. It's no big deal.

Relax and just enjoy the forum for what it is.  :)

-Peace 00s people!-

Why would we ban you? It's the 21st century!  :)
