Subject: The internet makes us really snarky

Written By: 80sfan on 02/07/14 at 3:30 pm

I've been guilty of being snarky and mean on the internet before. And if you believe in karma I've gotten my ass handed to me on the internet back the same way I was snarky and judgmental towards others, not from the same people but other people.

I've learned to be nicer though, except towards decadeologists.  ;)

Have you encountered meanness or snarky comments on the internet before? Were you ever snarky yourself?

The encounter I was snarky on was about six years ago. I haughtily commented on a girl's dress that I thought was ugly on a blog. And my account was nuked a few minutes later. Looking back, I was mean and a....

I think we have all  encountered meanness or snarky comments on the internet before. Can't really stay away from it.
All of us have bad days and we've been in a pissed off mood when we posted. I know I have.  Apologies to those I have offended on inthe00s.

What I don't understand, and maybe never will, is the trolls who's only purpose is to piss people off (have they no life?? no conscience??) or some people just take pleasure in provoking others with most of their posts, and chose to be irritating, confrontational and snarky.  I just don't get it  :-\\  It's their life, I guess  :-\\

There have been some real jerks on some facebook groups. Unbelievable.

I've learned to be nicer though, except towards decadeologists.  ;)

The exact reason why people are more mean on the internet is because it's not in real life.

Hopefully, if they're straight-forward in real life they're not bigger than you and stronger.  ;D

But I enjoy being snarky. Especially when I see someone make an error--as I see on Tumblr frequently because I spend my day there--and I correct them. If I like them, I do it politely, if I don't like them, I'm sharp as a steel blade.
And if someone is rude to me, the gloves come off and I enjoy myself raising hell.  :)
I just laugh at the ignorance now. I used to get upset, but I'm over it. All that frowning causes wrinkles.  ;)

I have encountered it a lot.  There have been times where I took it to personal.  Those people didn't know me well enough so I shouldn't have a gave them even a minute of my time/emotions.  I have talked back to them a few times but usually I just avoided it the best I could.  I don't recall being rude myself unless someone took something the wrong way.

The internet makes us really snarky?

Snark is fine.  Snark is occasionally hilarious.  Snark is second only to pr0n as the foundation of the Internet.  Never take snarky comments personally, and try never to deliver them personally.

The polite and academic name for the phemonenon is the Online Disinhibition Effect.  I think Penny Arcade put it better in Green Blackboards (And Other Anomalies).  Remember that the point of snark is to make other readers laugh in shock, delight, and horror (and sometimes all three), and is almost never actually aimed at the actual target of the snark.  Without snark, it just wouldn't be the Internet we all know and love, especially without you, you gibbering idiot.  I chastise because I love.

No argument here.

"This product is crap.  If we ship it, our users will abandon us in droves and we'll all be out of work."
"Yeah, it's pretty f*bleep*ked, let's delay shipping for a month and fix the bugs we know about."
"If we have another month, can we add this other feature?"
"If we do that, we f*bleep*k everybody who has to test it."
"Oh yeah.  That'd suck.  F*bleep*k it, it can wait until the next release."
"Yeah, let's make sure we ship something good instead of crap."
(both developers go back to work with a pretty good idea about what still needs to be done...)

vs.

"I'm not entirely convinced that our test suite is up to date."
"We've told everyone we're on track to make this sprint."
"Oh.  I guess we ship whatever we have, even if..."
"Even if what?"
"Even if we have to ... umm ... leverage our synergies in an agile fashion?"
"And that's how we meet our time-to-market goals!"
(both developers go back to work, but neither one is sure which one of them was snarking harder...)

To me, being snarky & being mean are two different things. Yes, I have been know to be snarky-and I admit that there is one person one this board who I tend to be snarky with more than others-but that is because it is just too easy and most of the time, this person just doesn't get my snark. To me, it is just a little ribbing but not really meant in a malicious way.

Being mean is totally different. I have seen people be downright mean to others-even on this board. Because the internet lets people be anonymous in a way, many feel it is ok to be mean. And because people think it is ok to be mean on the internet because they don't really know these people they are being mean to, that meanness is spilling over into real life. And that meanness can be downright dangerous. There is that story about the person who was shot in a movie theatre for texting. And that person who was shot for an argument over loud music. I am not saying that it is the fault of the internet that this world has become meaner. There are cases where people DO know each other and they still bully them. How many times have we heard about people committing suicide because they were bullied on Facebook or some other social media site? I just think that people are not being taught to be nice at all levels of our society.

Even elective officials are mean. It is ok for the Vice President to tell a senator to "go f*** yourself" on the Senate floor. A member of the House can shout "You lie" to the Pres during the State of the Union address. This world lack civilities these days on-line & off-line. I am not so naive to think that the world will all sit down and sing a chorus of Kumbaya together, but I just wish people would be just a little bit nicer and civil to each other.

Ok, end of rant.

I can tell you the difference in how I cut up in different places online. On Facebook, I'm actually held back, mainly, because several of my friends are pageant people and have kids in pageants, and thier kids have also friended me on Facebook, so I keep it relatively clean.

On Tumblr, I have no sort of sensoring at all. I say anything at will and really, I'll look back at old posts and go, "I said THAT? OMG!" But everyone I seem to associate with on there are loony in the later hours. We say whatever, fight, kiss and make up in the same 5 minutes.

Frankly, I'd like to be this sharp in real life, but I know if I did, I'd stay brawling and rolling and covered in bruises. Not a good look. Besides, no one wants to sound like Lisa Lampanelli ALL the time.  ;)

I have a rule not to be mean to people unless they're mean to me first.  I recently had an encounter with someone who claimed to be a girlfriend of one of the members of Platinum Blonde.
I think she may have been jealous because I had a lot of pictures of the guitar player.
She said "tell Serge that I'm still better looking than he is. Hahahaha"
I said "What are you e-mailing me for? I don't know Sergio Galli personally."
She said "Oh! Why do you have so many pictures of him then? Oops."
I said "because I'm a big fan of Platinum Blonde."

Why I have so many pictures of Platinum Blonde's guitar player is none of anybody's business.

I was snarky as hell earlier tonight. I made a suggestive remark about a celebrity (Marlon). Now my Tumblr, which has 1,050 posts on it, with a generous portion of posts for (Marlon) and one lady gets completely twisted about it.
She had the nerve to say that I was shaming Black Women as a whole.  ::) Which is utterly ridiculous to me.
(This was a Black Woman saying this to me...) I don't see how me, as a Black Woman, finding a Black Man attractive and making noise about it, is shameful.
I've mentioned a whole slew of male celebs, Marlon, Michael, more White classic matinee idols than I can count, and she latched on to a statement made in jest to start with.
So we cursed each other out back and forth for about 3 rounds.
Finally, I blocked the bitch, but I did thank her for being my first Tumblr Beef. Moo. (Yes, I actually added the "Moo" on the end. Beef=Cow=Moo.)
A THOUSAND posts...and she chooses that one. Stupid troll.  ;D

I just wonder, how the hell you get bent out of shape for saying something positive about a person? I could understand if I said he looked liek a clump of used Play-Doh, but I said he looked sexy. How...is that bad, unless Webster's changed the definition of "sexy" while I wasn't looking!  >:(

I think that some people are just overly sensitive.  I got myself into some trouble about a month ago for saying something that I shouldn't have said. Long story short is I went on a nostalgia trip that went too far.
I hurt someone that I really cared about and now I know that he still cares about me.  I hope that something happens to the friend but first I need to give him his space.

EDIT

Everything is okay now.  I'm going to leave this alone now since the person that I was snarky with 2.5 months ago has since forgiven me and I don't want to do or say anything that could screw that up.

I wasn't (because I don't do passive-aggressive - if I've got a beef I'll call someone on it), but now that you mention it, I will.  If I had to peg you into a category, you're one of the "Debating Issues" or "chatting" folks, firmly within the bounds of the error bars.  You raised the key issue, though: motivation.  Motivation is important.  It's one thing to make fun something with the intention of goofing on someone where everyone involved can get a laugh (done it myself, will do it again, and have no regrets over the times I've made myself a well-deserved target :), and quite another to target an individual with the intention to manipulate behaviors and/or cause actual harm.

Yeah, but nice can be contagious just like mean can be. I'm not saying that you should let people walk over you but maybe if you are nice to others even if they are mean to you, maybe they might realize that they are indeed being mean and maybe they might start being a little nicer. MAYBE!

I'm a flawed person, but most of the time I'm fair. If I'm mean to a person, I don't blame them for being mean back! I mean, people are human and can only take so much fire you throw at them (not you personally, I meant people generally).

I just think to myself, "Hey, it's only fair that you scream back!" Then I apologize and 80% of the time they accept my apology!

I totally get what you are saying. You are right that we all are human and sometimes ALL of us have bad days and NO ONE HAD BEST GET IN OUR WAY!!! But I'm talking in general. If you are normally nice to people, on those bad days, people are more apt to forgive you.

BTW, I knew you weren't talking about me personally.  ;)

I use to flame often when I was younger. It's easy to be mean online because of the anonymity.

I've mostly grown past that stage now, but sometimes I can still be catty if someone irritates me or if I'm in a particularly foul mood.

The good thing of being anonymous is that no one can see what you're doing and that could be a good thing. But if you get someone angry they could threaten you with a computer virus, you never know what they're thinking on the other end.

I think it's happened to me a couple of years ago, some guy in a chat room got into an argument with me and he threatened me with a computer virus the next day and lo and behold, nothing happened.

That's true. Of course it's because we're not face to face and it's a different environment. A normally quiet person may be particularly talkative, someone who's easy to get along with offline might be combative online. Younger people especially use personas and may take things the wrong way quicker and argue more, but that's just my observations. I've been in enough internet dramas for it. Snarky can be just in fun, but it can be rude too, and online it can be hard to tell the difference especially when you don't really know someone.

I have left facebook groups coz of childish behavior before, when too many pissing contests go on in a group and someone has to put down or mock or insult others over and over. It's an unhealthy group that way.  Sometimes it's weird how the assholes keep posting...everyone knows they are an asshole, no one likes them, but yet they don't get banned, not do they change their behavior in any way. So many vicious arguments over silly things in fb. I guess the fb mods don't care if people leave and it's an unhealthy group.
There are thousands of other groups out there that are healthy. I don't miss the old groups at all. Life is challenging enough without stupid internet drama.

It's still mostly* true that on the internet, we can be judged by the content of our character, regardless of whether our skin is pink, brown, or blue.

*The secret police of whatever country you happen to live in can figure it out, but as long as your character's content isn't too interesting, they're not going to tell.

Facebook isn't a good place to begin with. You can get thrown off with no warning for dumb things. I think they need to mind their own business. Privacy is important to me.

I think some of these communities where trolls rule and jerks rule is because they're in good with the leaders, or people are afraid to stand up for themselves. Some places if you challenge one of these people or fight back, you're banned and you were the one being attacked. Screw them. Offline what are they? I doubt people would put up with it there.

I was blocked for 24 hours one day for posting a video on my facebook page.  It was a live video of Platinum Blonde singing my favourite song Somebody Somewhere and it was horrible with no Facebook for that long.  :( And I don't even want to go through that ever again.  So I wonder why I had two other videos that didn't get reported and this one did?

I don't usually fight. I've only had ONE fight on Facebook, and ONE on Tumblr and that was with my own people.
There is a seperation in my people of the people like me--before death--and the proposed "posers" who came along after death. And some look down thier noses at others. I don't. If you're geniune, and trust me, I can't tell when they're NOT, I make friends and try to help them along.

When I'm not with Evan, and sometimes when I am, I hang around social media. (Evan doesn't mind, he knows MJ's magnitude to me and he likes him, so it's all good.)

I just  got over being told I was "ugly" by Dean McDermott!  He left a really rude and thoughtless message on one of my selfies and he said that I needed to "work on the quality of my skin?"? Whatever the hell that means.
Well,  I flew back at him and I said "Gee thanks for the advice Dean.  Maybe next time instead of being this inappropriate and unprofessional why not choose your words a little more carefully instead of being offensive?"? The entire time I'm shaking and crying at the thought of some stranger, who doesn't even know me personally, calling me ugly.

And then all of a sudden I got a stream of support from my Facebook Buddies who saw his comment and stood up for me.  I've never been more loved and accepted in my whole entire life than I was right now.  Now I'm not going  to watch anything that Dean or Torri Spelling are in ever again unless I get some indication that an appology is going to be made but I'm not holding my breath at all.

I may not be his definition of pretty but DAMMIT I think I look pretty good for someone who's 2 years shy of turning 40.  I told him to "choose his words a little more carefully instead of being offensive." :P
But you know something? I don't care anymore.  I'm not let this be the be all to end all.  Dean Weenie McDermott can go f--k himself for all I care.  My friends are behind me.  One of them said "You have to remember who they really are.  They have their heads up their ass.  Nobody has the right to treat anyone like that.  You keep shining like the diamond that you are."
I'm happy that everyone has my back and that I don't feel like I'm alone.  I've always had issues with the way that I look and that comment just took it too far.  So far that I flipped out and said what was really on my mind.  I'm also glad that I had people who know me to back me up.  :D

When you found out it was a parody account, you admitted it here, which means you're still being a pretty good sport about it!

Yeah.  I guess so.

I made him aware of what was going on? I'm wondering if this is someone who wanted to do Dean McDermott some professional damage?

Yeah that too.  Because I was so upset that I was ready to call for a boycott of his shows.  Till my friend said "I don't think Dean would do this."
So this is why I said "To the asshole who called me ugly, and no I don't believe that you're Dean McDermott, thank you for making me see who my true friends are."

No matter how much of a jerk that guy was to you, you can at least rest assured that you are not a loser who poses as a sub-par celebrity on Facebook!  :D

Yes.  But you know what? If it was him I'll be very disappointed.

I highly doubt it was actually him. The amount of fake celebrity profiles on Facebook is ... well, kind of alarming, really.

I'm sure Tori probably knows about this.

I'm sure she does.  She'd probably tell him "that's not what women want to hear."
