Subject: Where can I buy an old computer?

Written By: xX07-GhostXx on 06/29/19 at 3:15 pm

I bought SimCity Societies from Amazon months ago. I knew that I wouldn't be able to run it on the laptop I currently have, BUT I need to ask where I can find a computer that meets the system requirements (OS is Windows XP/Vista/7) and is from before or during 2007. Is this even doable?

Are there any swap meets in your area? Sometimes they sell old computers.

I just bought a computer about 2 months ago that has Windows 7 from Amazon. It is a refurbished on and it didn't have a lot of bloatware like many new computers have. I am VERY happy with it.

How can you not run SimCity Societies from a 2007 computer? The game came out in 2007.  ???

Edit: I am guessing your computer must be even older than that. In that case, yes, most computer made past 2001 or so should be able to run SCS (though you should check the specs).

Why does it have to be from before 2007? Shouldn't any computer be able to run it? I mean I play games on my modern computer qith Windows 10 that are 20 years old (Jagged Alliance 2) so why would you need a 12 years old computer? ???

I'm guessing for nostalgia purposes (like how Dude111 still uses a Windows 98 computer with IE6) Ghost wants a computer from 2007 or before. But one could argue that there is nothing to be nostalgic over with SimCity Societies and so the rule should be broken :P

I didn't think of swap meets. Thanks for the advice! Although something else I've been meaning to ask is how to be careful enough when it comes to buying used computers. I have read one horror story where somebody bought a used computer without knowing that child pornography was on that computer's hard drive, and it ended up framing him for child molestation, putting him in prison.

Is there a keyword to put in to Amazon's search bar? A lot of times when I tried this, all the computers were post-2007 models.

When I put the game in my Windows 10 laptop, it said it only worked on older operating systems. When I learned this, I figured I might as well go all the way and get something from before or during the year, rather than anything slightly newer, or else I'd be annoyed for quite a while.

My operating system is incompatible with what OSs SCS can run on. And considering my Windows 10 computer is becoming a slow piece of crap, I thought I should get a separate computer to put that game on, as well as maybe a couple of other games when I have disposable income.

Thrift shops often have old computers and electronics. As to whether they work or not is another question. Also Ebay would probably have what you are looking for if you keep checking back frequently, but check the description of the item carefully to make sure the seller definitively says it works. Buying used electronics sight unseen is dicey but it can pay off.

My new computer was made after 2007 but it has Windows 7 on it. It was a refurbish-originally had Windows 8 on it. The age of the computer is not the issue-it is the OS that is. Just plug in "Computer Windows 7." As long as the computer operates with Windows 7, your program should play.

What OS are you running? I've recently been able to get both Civilization II and the original Rollercoaster Tycoon working on Windows 8.1/ It required a little jiggery-pokery, but they're running fine. For a game as popular as SimCity, there's likely other people out there trying to do something similar.  Try an internet search on 'Simcity in Windows xxx'.

Another option would be to use an emulator/virtual machine for the OS you need. There are videos on YouTube explaining how to do this.

I tried to get Pirates & Age of Sail to work on Windows 7 but it just didn't work.

From searching, it looks like you should be able to run Age of Sail in Compatibility mode. Most likely you can do the same for Pirates. To do that, right click the executable when installing and choose 'Properties'. Select the Compatibility tab. If there's a button for 'Compatibility Troubleshooter', click on that and it should figure out the settings needed to run the game. It's also possible to set that up manually.

There is nobody playing SimCity Societies except the OP lol. I did get SimCity 4 working on my old Windows 8 laptop though.

Tried it. It didn't work. I was able to install it but I wasn't able to play it. I think there is a place where you can download these games to play on the newer OS. These games are for Carlos. Right now, he usually plays Civilization V.

I tried to change the compatibility settings for the game by what methods I saw online upon first downloading it on my Windows 10 computer, but it didn't work.

Yeah. I had some luck finding it on eBay but don't know how the whole bidding system works, so for now I'm putting it on the backburner. Amazon didn't seem to have it at all...

I got a computer made in 2004 from eBay. It has no internal disc drive, however, which leads me to ask the people real intelligent about computers - do you think SimCity Societies can run on a Windows XP Dell Latitude D410 2GB RAM 2 GHz Laptop? The OS downloaded latest on this laptop was a later version of Windows XP (Windows XP Professional).

Somebody please help me, because I don't know all of what I need to replace in my 2004 laptop. I was able to download the game and pull up the menu after that, but when I actually tried to either start the tutorial or create a city, first it froze, and then I got a Blue Screen of Death.
