Subject: Homeless Tragedy

Written By: jaminhealth on 11/07/20 at 6:18 pm

I just read a huge suggestion from a person in the GOP about the homeless situation/mess in CA.  The homeless are all over the place, beaches, parks, sidewalks and it goes on and on....and these people arrive in CA from all over the U.S.  These are not just Calif homeless and now with Covid lord only knows  how many more are living on streets from losing their  housing due to loss of jobs.    Many are mentally ill, many are military people and the rest, just plain down on their lives...

The politicians have been TRYING to work on this issue for a LONG LONG TIME....

Now a GOP person gave a good suggestion on a CA website I was just reading.

Build a TENT CITY and have it supervised and get all these people in this tent.

Somehow this makes sense to me.....

Wouldn't that be pretty much the same approach as the shelters that have been around for ages? ???
Didn't those fail horribly and were just a waste of good republican tax money by a democrat looney according to GOP (only know about that from posts on a conservative forum so please correct me if I'm wrong)?

If it is as described above it sounds to me like a 'We don't care for the poor! Oh wait, they are affecting the rich now so now we have to do something about them....' thing to be honest. ::)

According to a relative of mine who lives in CA many of these folks are being shipped in from other states - ie given bus tickets.  It's really bad

Oh I've been hearing this from the early 90's....

And yes there are shelters, and some work and many don't I guess....but pitching tents on sidewalks and in areas where fires are started is NOT acceptable, but goes on.....

Recently we’ve noticed several tents pitched near the town where we live. One or two have been really close to the town centre, just pitched in small areas of rough ground. More have been a short walk out in the countryside on the banks of the canal.

At the start of lockdown back in March several local hotels were used by the local council to house homeless people. I don’t know if that situation changed at all when the lockdown lifted.

Here's a novel idea-give the homeless a home and then they will no longer be homeless.

Our state is spending so much $$$ on trying to house and feed the homeless and some of it works and much does not.  These people are mentally ill in often cases, and refuse to be  housed.....it's a horrible mess....they really have no quality of life.

Nah, that's communism.  ;)

BTW as a German citizen you have a right to get a residence in Germany. If you become unemployed you can apply for unemployment money and your rent / up keeping costs for your own home will be covered as well if it's not excessive. It can happen that you get forced to move to a cheaper residence but you don't have to become homeless in Germany.
Medicare is covered also so people can get medical attention if needed.

I don't think Europeans take into account that the U.S. has probably over 3 times the population of say Germany and controlling the size of one's country makes a huge difference and challenge.

The unemployment benefits here are payed for by the municipality not the state or even the federal government so I think it's comparable. However I'm fully aware that things are run very differently in the US and that most methods can't just be copied from one nation to the other as each has different requirements, cultures and resources.

They need to relax zoning and city planning laws that are preventing houses from being built.

Here's a good one folks...we have a doctor talking on local radio here about the covid fiasco...she discusses it all and people call in with their questions, comments, experiences etc...she is on every day for 1  hr of Q&A's....

One man just called in and said with the Huge homeless population here in  CA, we hardly hear of covid cases and deaths....these people do NOT social distance, do not sanitize, live on the streets, live in close quarters and YET, hardly hear of them dying from covid??????

Maybe living like this population will keep one healthier and alive....think about it...Not for me BUT, get what I'm thinking.

And because we hardly hear... means they don't exist?  That's the same logic as if we don't test the # will be lower.  Get what I'm thinking

You don’t hear much about Covid of the homeless. Nor do I hear much about homeless murders, beatings, or deaths in general. Unless it was done by a higher profile person like a cop.

They are dying daily regardless of what and the longer this covid mess continues of lockdowns and job losses the more will be on the streets.....just hearing Trump will not sign the current  stimulus of $600 per person, but wants $2000 per person....what a mess with the political circus.. where it all stands this morning I have not tuned in yet....
