Subject: Opera Legend Luciano Pavarotti In Final Days

Written By: HawkTheSlayer on 11/29/06 at 4:49 am

I saw a newspaper headline today, that made my breath catch.

Luciano Pavarotti, the 71-yr. old opera tenor, has pancreatic cancer, and is reportedly in poor enough health, that he is seeking to find his successor.

This legendary performer is considered by some to be the Greatest Opera Tenor of all-time, beating out such greats as Enrico Caruso, Mario Lanza, Placido Domingo, and Jose Carreras.

Is there anyone who has a favorite song/performance/memory about this great legend?
Please feel free to share it.

Pavarotti has sung some of the best arias and most beautiful pieces of opera I've ever known. I have him on several discs, yet I don't own a disc of just his singing only.

I also like Elisabeth Schwartzkopf, Birgett Nilsson, etc.

I used to have a tape of "The 3 Tenors", when they performed in Italy, with Maestro Zubin Mehta.

The performances were superb!

I have heard many songs and arias of Pavarotti, and the song I will most likely remember him for is considered his signature: "Nessun Dorma".

I have seen the 3 tenors on PBS, but I didn't tape their performances.

I once saw Pavarotti make an appearance on David Letterman's show, and with him was Michael Bolton.

They performed "Nessun Dorma", and it was extremely moving.
Never had I actually seen Letterman cry, for any reason.

He took off his glasses, and was tearing up unashamedly.

Pretty powerful stuff!

I wonder if they are playing music in the background to ease his last days, and if they are what is it that he
is listening to.

That's a very profound question!

Oh no.  My Mom must be really upset.  She adores Pavarotti. :\'(
