Anyone a collector of cartoons on DVD?

I just began my collection with 'Volume 1' of Tale Spin.  Contains the first 27 episodes.  I saw it in a used CD shop for $24.99 and it was still in the original factory sealing.  I couldn't pass that up

Come December, I'm definately getting The Smurfs 8)

I think the cartoon 'The Real Ghostbusters' was so called because it wasn't able to fully use the Ghostbusters film licence due to copyright. That is why the ghostbusters only show a passing resemblance to the characters in the film.

Recently found two rare/out of print Little Luu DVDs featuring the mid 1990's HBO incarnation of the classic character that's based on the comic books from the 1940's & 1950's and featured the voice of Tracey Ullman in several episodes, early season I assume.  8)

Better than the '40's theatrical cartoons, which some are in public domain, which the character was bland.

What I find odd, even for the early/mid 20th century, is that the comic books were written by John Stanely since the stories were from a female perspective. I know Lulu was created by Marge Buell.

Never knew there was '90s version of Little Lulu. Is it as good as the older version that I do remember seeing?

Subject: Re: Cartoons on DVD

Written By: woops on 05/30/08 at 1:14 am

It's slightly better, though the episodes are true to the comic books that usually have Lulu against boys (ie the lemonade sale, the boys building a rocket and having Lulu & Annie thinking they're in Mars, snow fight) or some random situation like Lulu turning green after putting ink in the bath tub or her & Tubby inventing a hair tonic.  Unlike the '40's cartoons, she doesn't have nightmares and isn't as mischievious.

Also unlike many modern cartoons based from classic characters, she didn't get "hip makeover".

The two DVDs  each feature 5 episodes, which one episode features 3 shorts, a few "Lulu Bites", which were one minute cartoon bits (ie "Quickies" from "Garfield & Friends") and a stand up routine from the main character.

Yep.  In actual fact, the one in the picture is the original.  It was based off a short-lived Live-Action series titled 'Ghostbusters' that aired in the mid 1970s.  It was unsuccessful, but due to the success of the different, yet same titled movie in 1984, Filmation revived their series in animated form, and it was so popular, that producers of the Ghostbusters 1984 movie brought out their version titled 'The Real Ghostbusters' which was even more popular

I'll check real quick on it to see.

Edit: Yep, from Wikipedia:

The Real" was added to the title over a dispute with Filmation and its Ghost Busters properties.

They also had the 90s He-Man sets for the same price, but I don't really have an interest in those to be honest.  The original 80s He-Man with that early 80s hairstyle is the only He-Man in my books

I think the bad animation was part of the appeal. It really was just like animated shrink dinks or colorforms. you know plain bland background because all the action was happening in the foreground.

Classic Cartoons from the theatrical era

New Disney classic cartoon compilations
January 14, 2009 - After going more than two years without issuing one of their low-priced compilations of vintage animated shorts, Disney will return to the format this April with the launch of a new DVD line simply titled Walt Disney Animation Collection: Classic Short Films. The hour-long discs will include a lithograph and a vibrant foil slipcover while carrying a $19.99 SRP. Due April 7th, the first three volumes are titled Mickey and the Beanstalk, The Three Little Pigs, and Prince & The Pauper. In addition to their famous namesake cartoons, the DVDs will also feature Brave Little Tailor, Thru the Mirror, Gulliver Mickey, Mr. Mouse Takes a Trip on Volume 1; Big Bad Wolf, Three Little Wolves, Chicken Little, Lambert the Sheepish Lion, Three Blind Mouseketeers on Volume 2; and Old King Cole, A Knight for a Day, Ye Olden Days on Volume 3.

"Looney, Looney, Looney Bug Bunny Movie" to be released on April 28
early 80's Looney Tunes compilation film that somewhat spoofs award shows   with various post 1948 cartoons

Bonus: three '90's theatrical Looney Tune shorts: "Box Office Bunny", "From Hare To Eternity", & "Pullet Suprise"

"Woody Woodpecker Favorites" to be released on March 10

20 Walter Lantz cartunes featuring Woody Woodpecker and various characters like Chilly Willy and Andy Panda. Most have appeared on the "Woody Woodpecker & Friends" sets.

Bonus: Two episodes of the "Woody Woodpecker Show" with cartoons new to DVD...

The Woody Woodpecker Show: Episode #53 (Featuring Kiddie League, Charlie’s Mother-in-Law, The Bird Who Came to Dinner, Fish & Chips) and Episode #56 (Featuring Billion Dollar Boner, Coming Out Party, Romp in a Swamp, Pest of Show).

...noticed that one of the titles would be very politically incorrect by today's standards though then it meant mistake.

I don't really know where to put this so allow me to go off topic for a second here...

anyone else see the cell phone commercial featuring Pepe Le Pew?  Does it bother anyone else that the cat is actually putting on paint (to look like a skunk) and anxiously awaiting for a text from Pepe and happy when it arrives?

Its so not in keeping with the theme of the Pepe cartoons.....okay- carry on!

People wpuldn't buy the cell phones if Pepe was stalking the cat (political correctness  ::) )

It was.  Monster was a plush doll who would come to life when the handcuffs were unlocked from his wrists.  He lived with a boy named Max and his only fear was a bigger monster known as Beastaur who would arrive via a magic portal and try to drag him back to Monster Land

About the 1960's set

Just quickly skimmed through the 1960s set, and here's the low down:

"The Porky Pig Show," against all my expectations, appears to be an actual representation of how the show was originally presented on Saturday morning television, minus commercial breaks. The full show opening, "curtain calls" (where they sing the sad song) and closing credits are here. The three cartoons have no opening or closing titles -- which is exactly how they would have been presented on this show originally. The titles of the cartoons in the closing credits match the cartoons presented here. At each break, there is a "commercial intro" (new animation, and many of us have seen these before on Cartoon Network/Boomerang) followed by a "commercial outro," which is actually a very short clip from a theatrical cartoon -- in one case, a line of dialogue is redubbed to "repurpose" the segment as a bumper. All looks like it comes from 16mm film, which is fine. Also, the "sad song" curtain calls segment goes on for a few seconds longer than when it was shown on Cartoon Network -- the wheel opens one more time and Porky Pig says "brought to you by..."

"Peter Potamus" has the later version of the show opening, in color, clearly sourced from a 16mm film print. This is the version that fades out after Peter says "brought to you by..." However, the rest of the opening title segment (which would have followed the sponsor billboard) is not present. This is followed by three cartoons, all in fine shape, and then the "curtain calls" (Ricochet Rabbit version), then finally the show closing, in color -- I believe this is the shorter ABC version. (Would have been nice to have the complete show opening, but I am glad to have all of what is here on a legitimate DVD source!)

The "Magilla Gorilla" show does indeed include the show opening and closing (though not the ending Screen Gems logo that was shown on Cartoon Network -- I didn't expect that to be here). They are the same versions that have been shown on Cartoon Network in the past. However, there are no interstitials and no curtain calls. Still makes up for having none of this at all on the "Complete Series" DVD collection.

The two "Quick Draw McGraw" shows include the show opening and closing, in color (what a friend calls "de-sponsorized" versions, which in this case means some heavy and awkward editing to the closing credits). In both shows, the three cartoons are presented with their full "long credits" or what I sometimes call "theatrical-style credits" (yes, I realize these were made for television). There are no interstitials.

"Atom Ant" and "Secret Squirrel" have the show openings, closings and three cartoons. No interstitials. (I notice some interference throughout the "Secret Squirrel" show which looks kind of like the interference I sometimes get on cable. Wonder what happened there.)

"Top Cat," "Jetsons," "Flintstones" etc. appear to be the same as the versions included in their respective season sets.

Pretty good for a sampler. I'm glad to have it.

EDIT: Actually, there is one thing I forgot about that deserves some complaining. Normally, this would be fine: The DVDs have a "play all" option or each item can be accessed individually. If you choose to go directly to a particular cartoon, it will play only that cartoon, and not the whole show -- this can be annoying for shows comprised of three cartoons with different characters. The second Quick Draw McGraw show, which is an extra on the second disc, can only be viewed as separate segments -- the extras have no "play all" feature, unless it was staring me in the face and I missed it.

Other than that, I'm glad to have this.

Coincidently, there's a review of the '70's set from Toon Zone

Wouldn't call "Yogi's Gang" the best since most episodes tend to be preachy and the early 60's/later 50's cartoons  (Auggie Doggie,  Huckleberry Hound) are more entertaining.

Disagree on the comment about "Josie & The Pussycats". While Alan may have been bland, Melody is funny, Valarie has the  brains, and not to forget the catchy theme song.

While not official, a Golden Age Cartoon thread about an interview... stated that there'll be another volume of the "Saturday Morning Cartoons" sets  8)

"Bugs Bunny Show"...  8) (though some of the episodes...sans cartoons...are on the now discontinued sets)

If there's a second volume of the '70's "Saturday Morning Cartoons" set, they could add the Josie & The Pussycats episode of "New Scooby Doo Movies" and "Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Hour" (an episode with more than 4 cartoons not on the Looney Tunes Golden Collection sets...though could be featured on the '60's set). Now that I might get...  :)

If there's a second season of the '60's volume:

"Huckleberry Hound Show" or "Yogi Bear Show"
"Dasterdly & Muttley" (used to watch it on a local tv station in the early '90's, though currently not on Boomerang)

"Porky Pig Show"

Porky Pig Show # 5 (Oct. 18, 1964)
"Thumb Fun" with Daffy Duck and Porky Pig
"Ready, Woolen, and Able" with Ralph Wolf and Sam Sheepdog
"Wise Quackers" with Daffy Duck and Elmer Fudd

note: three cartoons not on DVD

Looney Tunes that aren't on the now discontinued 'Golden Collection' sets that to be featured:

The '60's disc:

"Home Tweet Home".. Sylvester & Tweety
"Feather Dusted"...Foghorn Leghorn & Egghead Jr. (the smart chick...note: an actual chick)
"Zip n' Snort"... Wile E. Coyote & Road Runner
"The Jet Cage" Sylvester & Tweety

That '70's disc:

"Hare-way To The Stars" (well, as an alone short  with full credits since it's included  on "The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie")

4 cartoons? (maybe incomplete list) Wouldn't an hour show (with commercials) have about 6 shorts

synopsis of "The Bugs Bunny Show" episode:

(note: episode also new to DVD and first to feature the cartoon shorts featured on the episode)

Bugs Bunny Show # 23 (Mar. 14, 1961)
Mac and Tosh, the Goofy Gophers, are again hosts for the show. They spend their time politely arguing over who should
introduce the jailed Bugs, house-imprisoned and in-need-of-food Sylvester, and Tweety-in-a-city-park cartoon features (each insists that the other do it); so, Bugs interrupts them and himself does the job.

"Big House Bunny" with Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam
"Canned Feud" with Sylvester
"Home Tweet Home" with Tweety and Sylvester

I wondering what the bonus feature would include?

commercials (as rumored) and  probably a featurette about Looney Tunes & Tom & Jerry (the '60's set includes theatrical shorts) being shown on television

Subject: Re: Cartoons on DVD

Though just for the Looney Tunes tv packages and "Quickdraw McGraw" (a better episode of "The Jetsons" could've been included like when George judges a beauty contest), the '60's is worth getting.  8)

The '70's...  honestly, much worse than the first volume and mostly obscure titles (they could've added "Hong Kong Phooey" or atleast "Josie & The Pussycats in Outer Space")

"Looney Tunes: Spotlight Collection Vol. 7"

Note, no "new to DVD" cartoons and for the causual fans/those who don't want to buy the sets/and kids.

Well, atleast cartoons are released... though they should've done something like "Disney Classic Cartoon Collection" (ie 'Best of Bugs', "Best of Daffy", etc) to begin with rather than the "Spotlight Collection" sets, which are pretty much just about half the cartoons from the now disconinued sets (except Vol 3, which featured two Looney Tunes compilation films), IMHO.

There's many cartoons that haven't been released... especially fro the '30's & 1940's.

* "Rabbit Punch" (1948, Jones)
* "Odor-able Kitty" (1945, Jones)
* "Walky Talky Hawky" (1946, McKimson)
* "To Beep or Not to Beep" (1963, Jones)

"The Jet Cage"

with fake title cards, though don't know what tv package it's from...though taped from Teletoon Retro

I remember "Bugs Bunny & Tweety Show" would have the title written with Bugs in tuxedo (I think) next to it in the early 1990's.

Got "Quackbusters", which is a compilation film featuring horror themed Looney Tunes from the 1950's/early 1960's and two cartoons from the 1980's featuring Daffy with a wrap-arounf featuring the duck's paranormal extermination business (thoughties in with "Daffy Dilly").

Also three bonus cartoons, which "Little Go Beep" (far better than the horrid "Baby Looney Tunes" series) is worth getting  8)

Thundercats is always a worthy buy. Good to see GI Joe reaching Iraqi shores! Are the bootlegs geared more to expats or do the locals lap it up too?

I've got lots of bootleg sets. Mine are from visits to Asia. They go all out on the boxset packaging too - looks almost like the real thing.

Review for "Saturday Morning Cartoons: The 1970's Vol. 1"
http://reviews.goldenagecartoons.com/2009/1970s/josie2.jpghttp://reviews.goldenagecartoons.com/2009/1970s/wakeup.jpg

Somewhat agree with the review, though "Josie & The Pussycats" is good eye candy and  suprised that the reviewer (an actual animation buff)  didn't mention that "The Jetsons" was a '60's cartoon..

(Looks at the review)

I've seen the Chan Clan before. Some of the episode, mainly where they were singing, was lazily done(Which I found to be comical). :D

Definetly agree with the bolded.

The second volume of the Saturday Morning Cartoons sets are out October 27th.  The 60's features more Quick Draw and some Looney Tunes packages (5 new to DVD)...  8)

For some reason the people at Warner Home Video are clueless...

source

May appear to be a comilation of cartoon shorts, but it's actually a lame tv special with only clips of classic cartoons tied with (then) new animation.

A new Looney Tunes DVD is coming on 1/12/10: The 1979 television special "Bugs Bunny's Cupid Capers", which is made up of the following shorts:
* Hare Trimmed (1953, Freleng)
* The Grey-Hounded Hare (1949, McKimson)
* Hare Splitter (1948, Freleng)
* Little Beau Pepe (1952, Jones)
* The Super Snooper (1952, McKimson)
* Rabbit Romeo (1957, McKimson)
* Wild Over You (1953, Jones)
* Of Rice and Hen (1953, McKimson)
* Devil May Hare (1954, McKimson)

The price will be $14.97.

from Speedy Boris from Toon Zone, on the thread about the release:

For those paying attention, the only material new to DVD will be "Little Beau Pepe", "Wild Over You", and "Of Rice and Hen". (the majority of "Hare Trimmed" was included in the Looney Looney Looney Bugs Bunny Movie and the rest have been on Golden Collections) And from what I understand, many of these are just clips only, not the full cartoons.

Disappointing, to say the least.

Better off releasing the 500+ vintage cartoons that have yrt to be released (revive the Golden Collection sets or new compilations) or atleast "Daffy Duck's Fantastic Island", which several cartoons are shown in their entirity & haven't been released on DVD. Especially that most of the compilation films have been released on DVD.

Several tv specials have been releast on the sets like the better "Bugs Bunny's Looney Christmas Tales" (personal favorite, though most of the "new" tv cartoons tend to be mediocre) and "Daffy Duck's Easter Funnies".

1979's Bugs Bunny's Valentine featured Elmer Fudd as Cupid (an idea borrowed from Frank Tashlin's 1945 cartoon, "The Stupid Cupid"), showing to Bugs examples of his work, with clips from "The Super Snooper", "Little Beau Pepe", "Of Rice and Hen", and "Hare Trimmed". Cupid Fudd then "does his stuff" on Bugs at the race track ("The Grey-Hounded Hare").

BUGS BUNNY'S VALENTINE
Elmer Fudd is a "stupid cupid" who zaps the wabbit with the love bug.
Includes the complete "Hare Trimmed" and clips from eight other classics,
including "The Grey-Hounded Hare", "Hare Splitter", "Little Beau Pepe", "The
Super Snooper", "Rabbit Romeo", "Wild Over You", and two others.
Premiered on CBS: Feb. 14, 1979.
Executive Producer/Director: Hal Geer.
Animation Director: Jim Davis.
Renamed Bugs Bunny's Cupid Capers on home videotape.

Out of the few "New To DVD" 'toons and the rest, one ("Hare Trimmed") is shown in it's entirity...

source: Extras for Bugs Bunny's Cupid Capers and more!

Only two bonus cartoons  for a rather forgettable 24 miute tv special that mostly feature selected clips rather than full shorts

There's going to be sets aimed at collectors in 2010... 8)

More Looney Tunes sets (there's still many cartoons from notable characters that haven't been released)... Maybe Tex Avery MGM cartoons and more... Only time will tell...

For casual viewers or those that rather want "best of" discs rather than full sets, Warner Home Video should've done single character or themed discs (ie Disney's "Classic Cartoon Favorites").

Honestly, the tv specials were hit or miss and  don't come close to the original classic shorts. Though wouldn't mind some being released as a solo disc with bonus shorts or bunched into a two disc set for the nostalgia crowd. I'll admit that I like "Bugs Bunny's Looney Christmas Tales" and a few other  semi-decent shorts that are still watchable.

For obivious reasons (ie rights), "Daffy Duck & Porky Pig meet The Groovie Goolies" would never   (thankfully) be released. Though heard that it's among the worst cartoons ever made...

The ones that mainly featured short clips of the older cartoons are best forgotten.

Just got the "Saturday Morning Cartoons: 1960's Vol. 2"  8)

Watched "The Bugs Bunny Show" (for some reason appears incomplete since there's no bridging sequence before the second cartoon), "The Road Runner Show", selected cartoons (ie "Feather Dusted" from "The Porky Pig Show" & a Tom & Jerry short with the baby duck), and the mini documentry on Magilla Gorilla.

What I found ironic about the cover is that it has a picture of Daffy Duck and non of his cartoons are featured.

Review from Toon Zone

Saturday Morning Cartoons: The 1960s, Vol. 2": Frustratingly Uneven
By Ian Lueck
11-02-2009, 12:52 AM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The second volume of the high concept Saturday Morning Cartoons: The 1960s is out, and like the first volume it has its ups and downs, both in the cartoon selection itself and the presentation.

Volume 2 provides more Looney Tunes than Vol. 1 did, which of course pleases me as a LT fan. True, some of it is repeat material from the various Golden Collections, but luckily we get four new-to-DVD shorts to balance things out. "Feather Dusted" is one of the Foghorn Leghorn shorts where he acts as a father figure to Egghead so he can win over Miss Prissy. While not his best, it has amusing scenes and some great, energetic visuals by former Clampett animator Rod Scribner. "Home Tweet Home" offers a Sylvester/Tweety story set in the park, with a prototype Granny (who looks vastly different). As usual with director Friz Freleng, the gags are timed well and get me laughing just with their execution. "Zip n Snort" is a typically funny Road Runner cartoon, with the most memorable gag being when Wile E. Coyote slicks his feet with grease and, of course, loses control and skids down the railroad tracks towards an oncoming train. Finally, "The Jet Cage" is significant in that it was the final cartoon scored by Milt Franklyn, who succeeded Carl Stalling and had a very similar cartoon composing style; he only completed two minutes of it before dying of a heart attack. The rest of the score was by Bill Lava, who was uncredited in this cartoon and whose more modern, atonal style clashes with the material that opens the short. Other than that interesting production tidbit, it's a rather weak Sylvester/Tweety outing, with the gimmick that Tweety can fly with the aid of a jet-powered bird cage.

The included Jetsons episode, "Elroy's Mob", is enjoyable despite a well-worn plot, which has Elroy, due to a report card mix-up, running away from home and inadvertently getting involved with a pair of criminals. I especially found it fun how prophetic this episode was; one of Elroy's classmates watches The Flintstones on a wrist watch TV. iPhone, anyone? Its future-predicting technology like that which make The Jetsons fun to watch nowadays, even with the dated animation.

I also rather liked the Snooper and Blabber (cat and mouse detective team), Quick Draw McGraw (cowboy horse), and Auggie Doggie shorts (father sounds like Jimmy Durante, while the son is a prodigy), where traces of Looney Tunes veteran Mike Maltese's witty writing is still to be heard, even if executed at a slower pace than in the theatrical shorts he worked on.

To my surprise, I even enjoyed an action cartoon called Young Samson and Goliath, whose plot involves the wristband-donned teenage hero and his shape-shifting dog rescuing a stolen aircraft from baddies. Sure, compared to action cartoons today, the animation is positively static and the action scenes are pretty corny (for example, Goliath the dog pouncing at a guard might as well be in slow motion), but it had that campy '60s charm which is hard to resist.

Not all entries fare so well, though. The Hillbilly Bears is a one-note cartoon whose sight gags don't impress and whose voice acting annoys (and no, not being able to understand one of the character's mumbles isn't automatically funny). Space Kidettes lacks the outer space imagination of The Jetsons and just isn't funny. Even a short while after watching Peter Potamus and Atom Ant, I can't remember a thing about either. And Young Gulliver suffers from some blatantly obvious repeated animation, such as the eagle flying towards the camera, which I swear happens ten times in the episode!

As with volume 1, there's duplicate material from other DVDs, which doesn't benefit cartoon collectors. Here's a list of what shorts can be found elsewhere:

* "Army Nervy Game": Magilla Gorilla: The Complete Series
* "Baton Bunny": Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume 1
* "Big House Bunny": Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume 1
* "Canned Feud": Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume 1
* "Elroy's Mob": The Jetsons: The Complete First Season
* "Just Ducky": Tom and Jerry Spotlight Collection Volume 2
* "Mutts About Racing": Tex Avery's Droopy: The Complete Theatrical Collection
* "Salt Water Tabby": Tom and Jerry Spotlight Collection Volume 1
* "Scaredy Cat": Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume 1
* "The Wild Chase": Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume 4

Special features are slim; both discs come with "Saturday Morning Wake-Up Calls," which are just quick previews for the shows we're about to watch. Aside from the enthusiastic announcer's voice (which sounds similar to the deceased Don Messick to me), these are skippable, especially if you watch the episodes beforehand. There's also a quick featurette on Magilla Gorilla, which doesn't tell us a lot we wouldn't already know, though it features interviews from people in the cartoon field, so it's worth a watch. Rounding things up are some Warner Bros. trailers. So, not a lot of bonus material is on here.

The bigger problem with this set, though, is the fluctuating video quality. I realize that Warner Bros. probably had less-than-ideal prints to work with, but on some you ask yourself, "Seriously? This is the best they could come up with?" A perfect example is "The Road Runner Show", where the three cartoons which make it up ("Zip n Snort", "The Jet Cage", "The Wild Chase") look positively bad. "The Jet Cage" and "The Wild Chase" both have soft, faded colors when they've looked crisper elsewhere, and "Zip n Snort" is so washed out that it comes close to looking like a black and white picture half the time! What's even more frustrating about this is that we clearly see far better prints of "Zip n Snort" in the Saturday Morning Wake-Up Call bonus feature, so why did it look so beat up and worn in the program itself? Were they trying to replicate how these would've looked on old televisions? It makes no sense. At least some other Looney Tunes material on here looks good: "Big House Bunny", "Canned Feud", "Scaredy Cat", and "Baton Bunny" use their Golden Collection-quality prints, and it goes without saying that they stand head and shoulders above the other LT shorts on here.

As for non-Looney Tunes material, again, it's a mixed bag. I had no issues with the Jetsons episode, and the other early '60s Hanna Barbera shorts (such as Auggie Doggie and Snooper and Blabber) looked acceptable enough. But others, not to reiterate a point, looked soft, muted, and beat up. And one cartoon even is presented in its incorrect aspect ratio: "Mutts About Racing", a Droopy short from 1958 that was presented in Cinemascope. I imagine they were trying to preserve the way it was shown on TV screens back then, but it only makes me want the full picture instead of the sides cut off.

While there is some fun material on Saturday Morning Cartoons: The 1960s, Volume 2, I find it hard to give a full recommendation based on the video quality alone, as well as repeat material from other DVDs. Yes, the people behind the set deserve props for including The Bugs Bunny Show this time (wraparounds and all), and it was interesting to see some Hanna-Barbera material for the first time (some of which hasn't been regularly or easily seen on TV in years), even if I didn't like all of it. But it's just a shame more care couldn't have been given to some of the images on the set

review of the second volume of the Sat AM Cartoons: 1970's vol 2 set, from Golden Age Cartoons

That 70's DVD (or Animation Wasteland)
DVD Review by Brandon Pierce

http://reviews.goldenagecartoons.com/2009/1970s-2/grapeape.jpg

The 1970's were a time of dancing, partying, funky clothes, Star Wars, John Travolta, and last, but least: Bad Hanna-Barbara and Filmation shows. But, if you read Jon Cooke's review of Volume 1, you already know that. There are a couple shows on here that had a lot of potential to be decent ideas for children's shows, but they are just so flawed, and poorly written, that the word "FAIL" enters my mind 20 seconds into a single episode! BTW, the word "FAIL" is still in, right?

The first series highlighted is The Hair Bear Bunch, which, in my opinion, isn't too bad of a show. Of course, I'm only seeing one episode. It has a nice premise: three wild bears try to break out of their cages at a zoo and cause mischief, while being chased by the zookeeper. Sounds decent enough, but then you find out that the show is a shameless rehash of Yogi Bear, and it's difficult to enjoy the show afterwards. Hair Bear is like Yogi's stoner brother that he never told anyone about. He has all of Yogi's mannerisms, his trouble-making personality, and on top of it all, he's voiced by Daws Butler! The zookeeper, Mr. Peevly, is a rehash of Ranger Smith as well, both in design, and no-nonsense attitude.

The next show up is The New Adventures of Gilligan. The original Gilligan's Island always had that corny tone to it, and this animated version is no different. Still, I can't get past the feeling that the writers for this cartoon never saw the original series. Most of the characters' personalities don't match with their live-action counterparts. Based on the highlighted episode alone, Mr. Howell is selfish and disrespectful to the other characters, The Professor is more take-charge and bossy, and Mary Ann is quite rude. These characters were not that way in the original series. And, why is Ginger a blonde here? Did the professor create some kind of hair dye on the island? If he can make hair dye on a desert island, why can't he fix the Minn-- oh, never mind.

Most of the actors from the original show reprise their roles for this cartoon, with the exceptions of Tina Louise and Dawn Welles. Louise's absence isn't a surprise, as she always hated being associated with Gilligan's Island, but why no Welles? I guess, there wasn't enough budget for all the actors, and Welles got the axe. Or Welles knew the cartoon would be terrible and opted out herself. Oh well, more power to her.

The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan, is a weird hybrid of Josie and the Pussycats, and the later Ruby-Spears series Mr. T. It takes a known character or personality, and pairs them up with a bunch of kids, and they solve mysteries. The kids have their own music group, and much of the animation of them performing is obviously rotoscoped from Josie. This particular episode "The Mardi Gras Caper", doesn't showcase the rest of the series well. A diamond ring is stolen, and the kids hunt around town trying to solve the case, but Chan solves it by simply... inspecting the main crime scene, and finding the missing diamond. Thanks for wasting our time with the kids! I hope none of the other episodes were that sloppily written.

Most of the other featured series are okay. For the Looney Tunes fans, we have an episode of The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show which contains 4 classic Chuck Jones shorts. Only one, "Hare-way to the Stars", has not been previously released to DVD, but the print they used here looks nice. The opening sequence and bumpers for the main show look to be in terrible shape however. The color is faded, and there's scratch marks all over the place. Oddly enough, cleaner prints of the opening to this show was used on the Looney Tunes Golden Collection, Vol. 2.

We also get an episode of Sea Lab 2020, another show I never thought was too bad, but it's hilarious how clumsily they'd include educational bits. The characters Hal and Gail are scuba diving, and Gail wonders why she has more oxygen, and Hal explains that girls' lungs are smaller and take up less oxygen. Regardless if that's true or not (I'm no science whiz, but that makes no sense), Hal going through all the trouble of explaining, and making it sound like regular conversation is just absurd. You can tell the writers were desperate for something for the kids to learn.

Grape Ape is a show I do have fond memories watching as a kid. I always liked it, and it's nice to see a few episodes of it as part of Tom & Jerry/Grape Ape Show. The Tom & Jerry episodes however are terrible, as this is the era when they were friends, or friendly rivals. The rest of the programs are hit or miss. Many fans have been wanting the musical/variety series The Banana Splits on DVD, which they finally get an episode of here. I don't see what the big deal is. I've heard better music at a school pep rally.

The only real special feature is a documentary on Shazzam (which the set contains two episodes of), about two kids named Chuck and Nancy who for some reason are lost in Arabia, and they find a magic ring, which they use to summon Captain Planet... er.. Shazzam. According to the opening sequence, Chuck and Nancy must return the ring to it's rightful owner, before the genie Shazzam can transport them back home. Why the genie can't get them home before then is never explained. Can't imagine what the story pitch for this show was like. I get the feeling that WB must dislike this series the most, mainly because this is the first documentary I've ever seen for a cartoon where the historians (Jerry Beck, Mark Evanier, Paul Dini, etc.) do nothing but dogpile it, and explain the show's flaws. The main issue is the show has no real suspense. If the kids get into trouble, they always call Shazzam, and Shazzam always successfully vanquishes off whatever danger there is. You always knew the kids would be safe, so there was almost no point of watching the show!

Another problem I noticed that none of the historians discuss is the lack of emotion that the animators put into the characters, which makes most of the "dramatic" moments unintentionally hilarious. Example, there's a scene where Nancy (voiced by the effervescent Janet Waldo) gets kidnapped, and her brother Chuck doesn't notice at first (how he couldn't tell she was gone is beyond me, she sure jabbered a lot), and when Chuck does, his reaction is literally, "Where's Nancy? She must have been kidnapped. Hm." Hard to take a show seriously, when the characters are completely wooden, even when their own lives are in peril. The show is also just way too talky, with the characters totally explaining every event that is happening to them, when we, the audience can see for ourselves. of course this problem plagues almost every show from the 70s. This is "illustrated radio", right here.

So, that's the 70's Vol. 2 DVD in a nutshell. Do I recommend the DVD to anyone? I think it might make a nice Christmas present for your 5 year old cousin... or dog. Really, there's not a lot this DVD has to offer. Some may want it for nostalgic purposes, but only those people would be in their 40's now, and today they'd see how terrible most of these shows are, and most really should have stayed buried in WB's vaults. The only thing these shows would really be good for is seeing them get ridiculed by the Nostalgia Critic. Which is probably where my copy will be going to soon.

Another Looney Tunes tv special with mostly clips of various classic shorts with new animation as linking footage...

Better off renting for curiosity or watching it on tv (since Cartoon Network aired the infamous "Howl-o-Ween" special...)

Bugs Bunny's Easter Funnies coming to DVD

"Bugs Bunny's Easter Funnies" Coming to DVD

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 1977 Looney Tunes television special "Bugs Bunny's Easter Funnies" (aka "Bugs Bunny's Easter Special") comes to DVD on 2/16/09. The price will be $14.97. The shorts that make up the special, along with new wraparound material, include:
* For Scent-imental Reasons (1949, Jones)
* Hillbilly Hare (1950, McKimson)
* Rabbit of Seville (1950, Jones)
* Bully For Bugs (1953, Jones)
* Little Boy Boo (1954, McKimson)
* Sahara Hare (1955, Freleng)
* Tweety's Circus (1955, Freleng)
* Birds Anonymous (1957, Freleng)
* Robin Hood Daffy (1958, Jones)
* Knighty Knight Bugs (1958, Freleng)

As for bonus features, a menu-based puzzle game and an unnamed bonus cartoon are set to be included; stay tuned to toonzone for details.

some info
Bugs Bunny's Easter Special used the premise that Granny needs someone to "stand in" for a bedridden Easter Bunny. Granny and Bugs go through the Warner Brothers production lot, visiting the sets where cartoon characters are acting in their classic roles in such famous cartoons as "Hillbilly Hare" and "Knighty Knight Bugs" or screening their prior work in "Tweety's Circus" and "Birds Anonymous". The Bugs Bunny Easter Special's success (Video Movie Guide gives it five stars!) is probably due to the fact that classic cartoon directors Friz Freleng, Robert McKimson (this was probably McKimson's final work with Bugs and the Looney Tunes gang before his death), and Gerry Chiniquy were directors for the bridging story.

There's going to be Looney Tunes DVDs featuring solo character discs and also another volume of the '70's set (suprisingly doing better than the '60's  :o )... Plus an '80's Sat AM DVD set.

Would get a Daffy or Porky  DVD since there's many cartoon shorts that have yet been released on DVD.

'70's Sat AM... if there's more than 4 cartoons that are worth getting, IMHO (ie Looney Tunes packages to the "New Scooby Doo Movies" episode with Josie & The Pussycats)

A '90's set with early '90's Hanna Barbera shows (ie "Swat Kats", "Two Stupid Dogs"), "Kids WB" and other Warner Bros cartoons like "Taz-Mania" would be good too...

On the  1980's Sat AM DVD, they could include...

"Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show" (with cartoons not on the set...uncut though with tv titles)

Intro & outro: "It's Cartoon Gold"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNQSb1_uJkA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gst2Cn3nbrI

"Bugs Bunny & Tweety Show"

Intro:  "This Is It"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oy8dVZ5r_kU

Guessing cartoons like "Smurfs", "Flintstones Kids", various "Scooby Doo" incarnations ("13 Ghosts", "Pup Named Scooby Doo"), "Yogi's Treasure Hunt", "Thundarr the Barbarian", '80's "Jetsons", Filmation DC superheroes cartoons like "Super Friends"...

Pretty much 75% rehashes of older characters and most of the popular '80's cartoons have been released on DVD and aren't owned by Time Warner.

Personally the majority of the cartoons from the '80's were toy commercials, overly PC, and unwatchable. With a few exception like Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures" (coming soon, saw a few on YouTube...though been taken out sometime ago) and "Garfield & Friends".

Ironically enough Warner Bros. entered the television animation business (outside of Looney Tunes packages & specials)  in the 1990's.

If there was a '90's Sat AM set

Both discs to feature a "Wake-Up Call" (can't think of anybody who could narrate it)

Classic cartoon rehashes, action 'toons, and originals

Disc One:

1. "Tom & Jerry Kids"
2.  "The Plucky Duck Show"
3.  "Taz-Mania"
4. "Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries" (episode from season two)
5. "Bugs Bunny & Tweety Show" (cartoons not on DVD and uncut...though with tv titles intact)
6. "Animaniacs"

Bonus features:

mini-documentry about the silver age of Warner Bros. animation
Kids WB, Cartoon Network bumpers

Disc Two:

1. "Pirates of Dark Water"
2. "SWAT Kats: Radical Squadron"
3. "Batman: The Animated Series" or "Superman: The Animated Series"
4. "Freakazoid"
5. "Pup Named Scooby Doo"
6. "2 Stupid Dogs"

Bonus features:

mini-documentries: about the downfall of Sat AM & syndicated cartoons and rise of cable animation and also "Swat Kats" (since it was canned because of Ted Turner)

Bonus cartoon: "Dexter's Laboratory" (which is one of the cable cartoons mentioned on the documentry)

Guessing what the  "Saturday Morning Cartoons: 1980's"  set would be like...

Wouldn't mind seeing some of the Flinstones spin-offs, which I've kinda enjoyed on Boomerang like "Pebbles & Bam Bam", the '70's "Flintstones Comedy Show", and a few specials. Though only in small doses...

With cartoons from Hanna Barbera and Ruby Spears

Just out of randomness and probably some might be on the set (BTW, I don't work for Warner Bros. Home Video)

1. "Flintstones Kids"
2. "Yogi's Treasure Hunt"
3. "The Dukes"
4. "Jetsons" ('80's version)
5. "Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show"
6. "Smurfs"

1. "13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo"
2. "Thundarr the Barbarian"
3.  "The Centurians"
4. "Space Stars" featuiring '80's version of "Space Ghost"
5.  "Police Academy"
6. "The Flintstones Funnies"

Recently got the rare "Cartoon Crack-Ups" DVD that featured 7 Hanna Barbera cartoons from 1958 to 1970 including episodes of "The Flintstones", "The Jetsons", "Top Cat",  "Scooby Doo" and selected Huckleberry Hound, Yogi Bear, & Pixie and Dixie shorts. Sort of like a prototype of the Sat AM cartoons sets.

Pros: some great episodes selected like "The Swimming Pool" ("The Flintstones") and "A Date With Jet Screamer" ("The Jetsons")

Cons:

the "Flagstones" (Flintstones pilot) was re-dubbed

On the theme songs section, only the first few seconds of Top Cat theme was featured and the actual theme of Huckleberry Hound & Yogi Bear wasn't included since the intro from the shorts were used instead.

The 60's "Saturday Morning Cartoons" set is rumored to been discontinued due to low sales, but the '70's will continue and also an '80's set will be released. Then again, majority of the cartoons from the '60's have been previously released on DVD sets and also air on Boomerang where the '70's sets has more obscure titles that doesn't come very often on television or DVD releases.

Besides "Quickdraw McGraw" (4 on the sets, but not a stand alone DVD set), there's remaining seasons of "Huckleberry Hound Show" that wasn't released..

As for Looney Tunes packages, there's still many post 1948 cartoons that haven't been released. Though there's talks that there's stand alone Bugs & Daffy (perhaps other characters and from the 1930's/1940's) DVDs that'll feature "new to DVD" cartoons.  Though some would be on other Sat AM sets since they were a staple for four decades.

It is funny how these DVDs bring back our childhood.  I recently got Voltron as well as GI Joe.  Makes me feel like sitting in the floor crossing my legs, eating a bowl of cereal and basking in the soft glow of a TV right now.

Now been delayed...

Wouldn't mind if the content change since there's hardly any '40's cartoons on the Bugs disc and also several from the '60's are included (the better cartoons from the era  like "Transylvania 6-5000" have been released on the Golden Collection).

About the delay of the "Looney Tunes Super Stars" DVDs and the Bug Bunny "Best Of" compilation...

from TV Shows on DVD site

The delay for the April releases to August was due to Beck's insistence that the cartoons not be released "off the shelf", but instead get restored as the previous shorts have been when released on DVD. Our thanks to Jerry for convincing Warner to take that important extra step!

The other two "Looney Tunes Super Stars" single-DVD releases planned for this year are being looked at for release in November

Also in the US Town Hall interview, just before the 73-minute mark, he has a scoop for Katz: an unannounced, untitled-as-yet 2-DVD (possibly 3 discs, before all is said and done; it's not finalized yet) collection of Bugs Bunny shorts will be released, planned for arrival before year's end. While the single-disc "Super Stars" releases mentioned above will stick to the "no duplicates" policy that the "Golden Collection" four-disc sets had, this special collection of Bugs Bunny cartoons will have material previously seen on DVD (one short mentioned was 1957's "What's Opera, Doc?", already out on Golden Collection Volume 2). What's up with that? Beck explains that this is supposed to be a great item to buy (or get as a gift) for a fan of Bugs, who hasn't bought all the collections that are already out. He says (in part), "The contents are going to be pretty much the classic Bugs Bunny cartoons that YOU SHOULD HAVE...If you're going to have a Bugs Bunny collection...the bona fide Bugs Bunny cartoons". So this is intended to be the best of the best, of Bugs, all gathered in one DVD release for the first time. Beck does hope to include unreleased material on this set, especially on the second disc (tentatively themed as "Bugs Bunny Through the Decades"), but things are still being tweaked and ironed out. And he says that if this goes well, Warner might do similar releases with other characters, too. This is just a tease of the info he provides; please listen to the interview for all the available info, directly from Jerry Beck!

  Purchased the '80s set mostly for the single episode of Thundarr and Dragon's Lair.  I already own the entire Thundarr bootleg.  Will be nice to watch an episode which has been cleaned-up...

  The rest on the set...meh...

  After watching Thundarr after, what, nearly thirty years...I'm suprised how good it is.  The dialogue and interplay between the two main characters is a bit more savvy than I expected, I mean for an old Hanna Barbera cartoon...

  Also, something that made me smile - the surface of the earth was supposed to be decimated by a passing comet which rips away the planet's atmosphere resulting in humanity's downfall and wholesale enslavement to drooling, knuckle dragging morphodites (picture early neocons).  This was supposed to happen in 1994.  I'm here to tell ya that it didn't happen...

  It's wholesome post-apocalyptic Saturday morning fun in 1981...

A new Looney Tunes DVD set is coming on 10/12/10. The 210 minute, 2-disc set will contain seventeen Bugs Bunny cartoons, and three of those haven't been released on DVD before. The second disc will contain an hour of special features, including the uncut version of Invasion of the Bunny Snatchers (a 1992 short from Greg Ford and Terry Lennon), a brand-new featurette called "Ain't He a Stinker?", and TV specials, shorts, and rare appearances. The price will be $26.99.

7/5/10 Update: Here is the list of cartoons that will be on the set:

Disc 1: * Elmer's Candid Camera (1940, Jones)
* A Wild Hare (1940, Avery)
* The Old Grey Hare (1944, Clampett)
* Baseball Bugs (1946, Freleng)
* Hair Raising Hare (1946, Jones)
* Haredevil Hare (1948, Jones)
* 8 Ball Bunny (1950, Jones)
* Rabbit of Seville (1950, Jones)
* Rabbit Fire (1951, Jones)
* Show Biz Bugs (1957, Freleng)
* Knighty Knight Bugs (1958, Freleng)
* What's Opera Doc? (1957, Jones)

Disc 2: * Any Bonds Today? (1942, Clampett)
* Excerpt from "My Dream is Yours" (1949)
* How Bugs Bunny Won the West TV special (1978)
* Bugs Bunny Wild World of Sports TV special (1989)
* Invasion of the Bunny Snatchers (1992, Ford/Lennon)
* Carrotblanca (1995, McCarthy)
* Hare and Loathing in Las Vegas (2003 , Kopp/Shin)

I wonder if "Any Bonds Today" is uncut (with an unskippable disclaimer from Jerry Beck or  Leonard Maltin  ::) ) since it features a scene with Bugs imitating Al Jolson.

"How Bugs Bunny Won The West" & "Bugs Bunny Wild World of Sports", how about some more classic shorts  instead of forgettable  tv specials, which both mostly feature clips...

The WB Shop also features the list of the content (sans "Invasion of the Bunny Snatchers"), which it'll feature an episode of "The Bugs Bunny Show". Though doesn't give more details since several episodes have appeared on "The Golden Collection" and the second volume of the "Saturday Morning Cartoons: 1960's" set.

The DVD cover states that it features 17 classics, which the first disc includes 12 of the true classics and the second 3 '90's/2000's cartoons, a film clip the wabbit appeared in, 2 tv specials, short documentry, and an episode of "The Bugs Bunny Show" (which might include three classic  shorts...perhaps incliuding  one Bugs)

Don't consider "Any Bonds Today?"  as one of the "classic" Bugs Bunny cartoons since it was an advertisement for war bonds rather than  a 7 minutes short.

"Elmer's Candid Camera" should be in the bonus features since it's one of the proto-Bugs or Happy Rabbit cartoons
