Wow, I lived in the D.C./Baltimore suburbs in the 70's-80's and totally remember Capitan 20!
He hosted mid afternoon cartoon shows like Speed Racer, Kimba The White Lion and Marieboy on WDCA channel 20.

Baltimore had its local "flavor" show too, Captain Chessapeake w/ "Chessie" (local Baltimore version of the Loch Ness "monster", a really ugly puppet  ::) )

Both of these guy were real hams, and shows were extra cheesy, but they seemed like really nice guys that really loved what they were doing and loved kids...never thought I'd say I miss those days. But I do.  8)

BTW, I remember Mr. Rays Hair Weave and if you're really a DC/Balt local you remember the Carvel Ice Cream commercials too!

Excerpt from Wallace & Ladmo, one of the longest (if not THE longest) running daily children's shows in the U.S. (1954-1989).  I watched part or all of it almost every morning from the time I moved to Phoenix in 1977 'til the show went off the air in 1989.  RIP Ladmo.  :\'(

Chicago's rich in local shows.  One favorite: Cartoon Town, AKA the "BJ and Dirty Dragon" show with Bill Jackson

I vaguely remember Captain 20.

As for the Carvel Ice Cream commercials, they were also in the New York area.

There was a popular show in Canada called Harrigan that was filmed right here in my hometown.

http://www.tvarchive.ca/components/com_mtree/img/listings/19219_harrigan.jpg

It ran from 1969 - 1985 and starred an actor named Barry Dale as Harrigan, an Irish man dressed in a green outfit who entertained children and then he would look into his magic pot of gold and see all the drawings that kids across Canada would send in.  At the end of each episode, he'd do the Harrigan dance on top of the blarney stone

A local show it was indeed, but it was also syndicated across Canada

Wow. I wonder how an actual Irish person would have reacted to that show.

the best in NY/NJ was The uncle Floyd show.  I have discussed it here.  He ad great bands on like the ramones and such and played the piano...there was no studio audience so the only laughter you heard came from the cameramen and staff....hysterical!

In the Boston area we had a guy named "Major Mudd" who was great.  He was an astronaut and had trained fleas the most mischevious one called Ricky who was always getting into trouble. His spaceship was the "Nervous One", and he would sign off with "I'll be blasting you" shortened to IBBY. On Saturdays Ed O'Donnell, who played Major Mudd, played Lord Harold Harvey Bumblebrook, a great hunter who was lost in the wilds of Africa with just his Boa Constrictor Beulah for company.

Whoa, just stumbled  upon this old commercial favorite from the DC/Balt area.

Jhoon Rhee - Nobody Bothers me!

You can't have lived in the Wash, D.C/Baltimore area in the 70's/'80'S and NOT remember this TV ad.

cookie puss!

i couldnt remember if that was local or not.

It sorta was.  Back in the day, it was a Northeastern US phenomenon.  The company has changed hands a few times since Tom Carvel sold out, but the Carvel brand is still active, and available in much of the continental US.  (But unless you have a lot of dry ice for the trunk of your car, it may be melted by the time you get home.)

Yo, man, Cookie Puss there?

3urwTGqxwZ0

  - Uh, Cookie O'Puss (the St. Patrick's Day-themed ice cream cake), then, Cookie Chick, anybody, man, I wanna speak to them!

These pussy crumbs are making me itch.  Maybe I should scratch.

  - Beastie Boys, Cooky Puss, fan-made video, uncensored audio.

Pussy crumbs?  What are pussy crumbs?  (Take me home and eat me, yeah!)

-iZp5_gfhr4

  - The Scott and Gary Show, NYC public access TV, 1984 interview with the Beastie Boys about the surprise success of Cooky Puss.

RIP, MCA.

There was also a "Creature Feature" on KMTV out of Omaha with a host named Dr. San Guinary.

It ran from the early 1970's to the early 80's, and I barely remember this show, but I also remember that Dr. San Guinary did a live appearance at a haunted house in Lincoln in about 1974 or '75 (I'm pretty sure this was before I started kindergarten) and I saw him and freaked out.  :D
