Subject: What was No.1 on the day you were born?

Written By: Mudbug on 03/06/08 at 10:57 am

Have you ever done this? http://www.thisdayinmusic.com

It shows you what song was at No.1 on the day you were born.

(Go to 'Birthday No.1' at the top of the site).

My number 1's are:
'You're So Vain' by Carly Simon in the US
'Long Haired Lover From Liverpool' by Little Jimmy Osmond in the UK
'Ben' by Michael Jackson in Australia

Some are better than others!

It was an update of an old Hank Williams C&W song from the 40s...

And, rather typical of Hank's songs, it was a bit of a maudlin affair... :-\\

I don't think so... :-\\

...or wait...

...you can always try the site of the Dutch Top 40 itself. You can find any Top 40 from the very beginning (January 1965) there.
If you scroll down a bit, you'll see a tiny window that reads with a down arrow next to it. Click the arrow and you can pick any chart.
You'll have to know what week * you were born though, 'cause it doesn't give you a date option.

And of course it doesn't have all the search options that everyhit.com has for UK Top 40...

* or thereabout...A lot of years seemed to have had only 51 weeks, according to Dutch Top 40. :-\\

October 25th, 1967.

"To Sir, With Love" by Lulu. Always liked the song, and adored the movie.  :)

Interesting, as my parents married October 26th, 1966. Exactly one year and a day MORE than my birthday!

Guess you can say, I have no way to forget my parents anniversary! ;)

My birthday is exactly one day less (and one year) than my parents anniversary, each year!  8)

And yes, they are still married. It will be 42 years this October!  8)

For October 25, 1967 it was "Massachusetts" by the Bee Gees over here.

Does anyone know what was number one in Australia and the USA on the of my birth (September 8th 1957)?

September 8, 1957... "Ik Sta Op Wacht" by Joop de Knegt or Hans Brandel (both versions were listed). Not a song you know, I reckon, so here's a link for the Joop de Knegt version (as performed in 1988).

Sorry for bumping an old topic, but I'm confused how to determine this.

I was born October 28, 1990. Do I go with the song that was issued #1 directly BEFORE or AFTER I was born? "Black Cat" by Janet Jackson was issued number one on October 27 and "Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice was issued no. 1 on November 3. My birthday is October 28. Which one do I go with?

I just looked up the number one song for all of my birthdays. Again, my birthday is October 28.

1990 – “Black Cat” – Janet Jackson
1991 – “Emotions” – Mariah Carey
1992 – “End of the Road” – Boys II Men
1993 – “Dreamlover” – Mariah Carey
1994 – “I’ll Make Love to You” – Boys II Men
1995 – “Fantasy” – Mariah Carey
1996 – “Macarena” – Los Del Rio
1997 – “Candle in the Wind ‘97” – Elton John
1998 – “The First Night” – Monica
1999 – “Smooth” – Rob Thomas & Santana
2000 – “Come on Over Baby” – Christina Aguilera
2001 – “I’m Real” – Jennifer Lopez
2002 – “Dilemma” – Nelly & Kelly Rowland
2003 – “Baby Boy” – Beyonce
2004 – “Goodies” – Ciara & Petey Pablo
2005 – “Gold Digger” – Kanye West & Jamie Foxx
2006 – “Money Maker” – Ludacris
2007 – “Crank That” – Soulja Boy
2008 – “Womanizer” – Britney Spears
2009 – “3” – Britney Spears
2010 – “Just the Way You Are” – Bruno Mars
2011 – “Someone Like You” – Adele

Interesting how 1991-1995 has a streak of Mariah Carey and Boys II Men switching off. And then '08 and '09 have a double dose of Britney. I'm hardly impressed by most of these.

How could Billboard itself use the "wrong" method for generating the results of its own concept? I plugged a couple other random dates from other years in as well just to make sure my birth date/week wasn't a fluke and they each yielded the earlier date rather than the following one. I think the rationale behind displaying the prior date is that "Black Cat" (in this example) was the incumbent/reigning number one song on that date, as Ice Ice Baby hadn't been declared number one yet until the week was actually over.

Except Billboard doesn't do that, the chart numbers are gauged days ahead of time so a song that goes to #1 for the week of November 3 is declared #1 around October 24. Look at Billboard's website, it's currently showing the songs for the week of October 27, a date that hasn't happened yet.

http://www.billboard.com/charts/hot-100

Tomorrow the chart for the week of November 3 will be posted. That's just the way they've always done it.

So a song that was #1 the week of November 3, 1990 was declared #1 on October 24, 1990 and actually stood at #1 for the days from October 28 to November 3.

Well what other explanation could there be? Billboard's own website is giving me Black Cat for my birthday so I can't exactly tell them they're wrong. Also I get that October 27, 1990 was a Saturday, but doesn't it make more sense to name the week after the beginning date rather than the end date? In any other context, I would assume the "Week of October 27" to refer to a week that begins on October 27 and ends on November 2.

I'm not thrilled either way..."Ice Ice Baby" is probably one of the biggest jokes to ever top the Billboard chart, and "Black Cat", while catchy enough, is rather obscure as I don't think very many people know it.

Yeah, kind of screws you either way I guess, I'm just relaying how Billboard officially computes it. Here's a blurb that explains it

http://www.numberoneinhistory.com/FAQ.htm

The data on Wikipedia goes week by week. How can I determine the #1 song for an exact day?

You're right ... the Hot 100 is a weekly chart, not a daily chart. So, looked at daily, a song remains at #1 for at least seven consecutive days. But which seven? If the issue date is December 3, 1983, one would assume the dates represented were December 3-9.

But no: in the magazine, the chart is actually dated "the week ending December 3," which means that it covers the dates November 27-December 3. Other sources on the Web may have gotten this wrong. But the "week ending" method is the method agreed upon by the most serious chart fanatics. And considering that a given chart represents radio airplay and sales that were happening two to three weeks prior anyway, the point is academic.

This makes even less sense now. It seems as if you actually have to look for the issue date two weeks after your birthday to get a more accurate picture of what the most popular song was on your birthday. In this case...I'm claiming "Love Takes Time" as my birthday #1. ;)

One more note...I think it's only recently, because of the internet, that we get to see the number one song so far in advance. Back in 1990, you probably had to wait for Billboard magazine to arrive on the news stands (on or right before the issue date?) to find out the rankings.

1990 was before Billboard went to Soundscan, which probably affected how and when things were reported. Back then what Billboard did was call stores and ask them to report the sales figures, and then things were tallied up. Needless to say, it does seem like a confusing and inconsistent process.

Also to stay on topic, my birthday #1 is 'Save the Best for Last' by Vanessa Williams. #2 song that week was Tears in Heaven. Could be worse.

That song came out my senior year.  One of my friends had a Suzuki Samauri and we would BLAST it.  Good memories.

Mine are;

UK - Belfast Child by Simple Minds
US - Lost In Your Eyes by Debbie Gibson
AUS - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers
CAN - Angel of Harlem by U2
GER - First Time by Robin Beck

A decent lineup, had to look up Robin Beck though, never heard of her. :-[
