Subject: Favorite lyrics.

Written By: wsmith4 on 04/29/08 at 9:15 am

Name some of your favorite lyrics from songs...

My #1 favorite would be from Gloria Estefan's "Your Picture"

"Every star has a season, a moment, a reason to be.  We may watch, with regret, as they flicker, then die, but atleast for a second we bathed in the light of their passing.  Their memories, still lasting. "

MY GOD - most artists could only DREAM of writing a lyric like that.

She is probably my favorite lyricist, with other lyrics such as:
these are all from her song "Wrapped"
"I keep every tear like an ocean for every day that my fortune kept me from being with you"
"I cherish every morning that found us with the night scattered around us, faded and painting me blue"
"I cradle your faith that reveals me, grows like a flower, then heals me, fills me with promise anew"
"I carry your joy in my footsteps"

And Dolly Parton has some really great lyrics, too:
     from "Travelin Thru":
"God made me for a reason, and nothing is in vain.  Redepmtion comes in many shapes, with many kinds of pain"

Too many to list, really... I'll post more later.

The lyrics of most Oingo Boingo songs from the 80s are quality and quirky/amusing.  They make it cool to be dead.  I'm assuming Danny Elfman wrote them...

  No One Lives Forever
  Just Another Day
  Dead Man's Party
  Heard Somebody Cry

Some of the profound lyrics I have heard are from Cat Stevens:

Moonshadow;

"And if I ever lose my legs, I wont moan, and I wont beg,
Yes if I ever lose my legs, oh if.... I wont have to walk no more.
And if I ever lose my mouth, all my teeth, north and south,
Yes if I ever lose my mouth, oh if.... I wont have to talk..."

Karma and 2 big hoorays for mentioning one of my favorite albums by one of my favorite bands!!

"You think you've got it rough, what about your dying doggie?
Ten short years, he's getting old and groggy..."

Anyhow, I've always loved the line "When I was crazy, I thought you were great" from the Cars' "It's all I Can Do".  I've explained away many a bad romance with that line!

Relax, cop.  LOL. The police protect us.  it was a joke.    Here are my favorite lyrics to Beulah's "A Good Man Is Easy To Kill"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rr9fsTJ5GGg

I would be overstating
If I said I knew you well
That I knew you at all
When you flew through that windshield
And your life passed reel to reel
Was there a bit part for me?
I made a wish for you
Blew out the sun so it’d come true
But the sun froze along with your heart

So give up, give up your love
Give up, give up your love
I promise its not gonna kill ya
And I need ya, Lord I need ya

And when they cut up your lung
You said it could all breathe easy
The hole swallowed your heart
When they drill holes in your skull
And screwed that halo to your head
Did you think you could fly?
I made a prayer for you
Then prayed some more that it’d come true
Don’t know about God but I believe in you

James - Laid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkqIHWAMSJ4

This bed is on fire
With passionate love
The neighbours complain about the noises above
But she only comes when she’s on top

My therapist said not to see you no more
She said you’re like a disease without any cure
She said I’m so obsessed that I’m becoming a bore, oh no
Ah, you think you’re so pretty

Caught your hand inside the till
Slammed your fingers in the door
Fought with kitchen knives and skewers
Dressed me up in womens clothes
Messed around with gender roles
Dye my eyes and call me pretty

Moved out of the house, so you moved next door
I locked you out, you cut a hole in the wall
I found you sleeping next to me, I thought I was alone
You’re driving me crazy, when are you coming home

Some of my favorite lyrics from a recent song....

Stars - Your Ex-Lover Is Dead

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2yJSFHTrgM

God that was strange to see you again
Introduced by a friend of a friend
Smiled and said 'yes I think we've met before'
In that instant it started to pour,
Captured a taxi despite all the rain
We drove in silence across pont champlain
And all of the time you thought I was sad
I was trying to remember your name...

Live through this, and you won't look back...

I like Freewill.  Rush can do lyrics pretty good sometimes, but alot of the time it's pretty corny, IMO.  Freewill good, though...

I LOVE Rush, but it is true that their lyrics are corny (By-Tor, lol).

I really like the lyrics to These Foolish Things by Bryan Ferry / Roxy Music.  Though I believe the song was written in the 1930's.

Like Flames - Berlin

Karma for the reference to Terri Nunn/Berlin, who's still performing.

Obligatory lyric:

...and the Temple of Love is old and strong
But the wind blows stronger, cold and long...

  - Sisters of Mercy, Temple of Love (From way the hell before 1987, but I'll recommend the 1992 "Touched by the Hand of Ofra Haza", since I'm riffing off Berlin/Terri Nunn's vocal awesomeness.)

Hey, we're all entitled to an angsty/emo phase.  I still dig those tracks.  Besides, it was Goth that got me into industrial.

"Silicon advisors leading the way,
We reach our cruising altitude...
1-1-2029, West Europe, midnight.
Invisible and silent, circling overland.
Scanning, taping, filing,
Instantly checking
Every human, car, and plane
Of the quarters we survey."
  - Front 242, Circling Overland, from 1988's Front by Front.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go dig out an old copy of Microprose's F-19 Stealth Fighter flight sim game (heh, we kicked it old school, so old school we didn't know it was really the F-117, and way before we knew about that wacky diamond-shaped thing).  And dig out my ancient AT-style (USB?  This was the generation before PS/2 keyboards!) keyboard that I'd crammed a bunch of 555 timers and LEDs into, all to make things glow/blink appropriately after pressing certain keys.  It just isn't the same feeling snapping a picture of some unsuspecting Russkie trawler unless you can see a dull reddish glow beneath your fingers when the camera/bomb bay's open :)

Thanks! I love Berlin. I didn't really realize til that VH1 show lol. I went to go make a Berlin CD and was like, WOW, I got a lot of Berlin stuff!! How did that happen?!?!? LOL

The recent album, Voyager, is amazing.

Another random lyric...I'm not a huge Madonna fan. I do like alot of her stuff, but I was never a fanatic like some of my friends, but I always thought that this, from "Rescue Me" was spot on....

It's not my business to decide how good you are for me, how valuable you are and what the world can see.
Only that you try to understand me.
And have the courage to love me for me.

Sometimes I get this crazy dream that I just take off in my car.
But you can travel on 10 thousand miles and still stay where you are.

                        -Harry Chapin from WOLD

My theme song:

If I could stand
Beside myself
Would I see me or maybe someone else
'Cause it's hard to please
Most everyone
When your spirit's got you on the run, on the run

They say do your best
But don't cause a fuss
Don't make waves be like the rest of us
But I can feel the tide is turning fast
'Cause deep inside I know that I can't last
Another day
Not another day!

'Cause I'm O.K.
I finally found the person I've been searching for
I'm alright
I'm feeling good about myself and that's for sure

'Cause I believed them when they said I must do things their way,
They tried to cast me in their mold
But I just had to say,
That I'm O.K.
I'm O.K. this way yes I'm O.K. Yes I'm OK!

I'm O.K.
I finally found the person I've been searching for (everybody sing now!)
I'm alright
I'm feeling good about myself and that's for sure (whoo!)

I'm O.K.
I finally found the person I've been searching for (yahoo!)
I'm alright
I'm feeling good about myself and that's for sure
I'm O.K.
I'm feeling good about myself and that's for sure
I'm alright
I'm O.K. this way yes I'm OK!

One of my favorite singer/songwriters: Matt Johnson (aka The The). Lyrics like this:

"If the real Jesus Christ were to stand up today
He'd be gunned down cold by the C.I.A."
*

...that's hitting the nail on the head.

Or what about this (from "This Is The Day"):

"You could've done anything, if you'd wanted.
And all your friends and family think that you're lucky.
But the side of you they'll never see
Is when you're left alone with the memories
That hold your life together like -- GLUE"

So true. ...Well, to me, anyway.

"This is the day your life will surely change
This is the day when things fall into place..."

...But then again:

"Another year older and what have I done
My aspirations have shriveled in the sun
I'm crippled by guilt
Blinded by science
I've been waiting for tomorrow all of my life"

* Sigh *  :-\\

James - Laid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkqIHWAMSJ4

This bed is on fire
With passionate love
The neighbours complain about the noises above
But she only comes when she’s on top

My therapist said not to see you no more
She said you’re like a disease without any cure
She said I’m so obsessed that I’m becoming a bore, oh no
Ah, you think you’re so pretty

Caught your hand inside the till
Slammed your fingers in the door
Fought with kitchen knives and skewers
Dressed me up in womens clothes
Messed around with gender roles
Dye my eyes and call me pretty

Moved out of the house, so you moved next door
I locked you out, you cut a hole in the wall
I found you sleeping next to me, I thought I was alone
You’re driving me crazy, when are you coming home

I love that song and from James i also like

Out to Get You - James
I'm so alone tonight
My bed feels larger than when I was small
Lost in memories, lost in all the sheets and all old pillows
So alone tonight, miss you more than I will let you know
Miss the outline of your back, miss you breathing down my neck
All out to get you, once again, they're all out to get you, once again

Insecure, what ya gonna do
Feel so small, they could step on you
Called you up, answer machine, when the human touch
Is what I need, what I need is you, I need you

Looked in the mirror, I don't know who I am any more
The face is familiar, but the eyes, the eyes give it all away
They're all out to get you, once again, they're all out to get you
Here they come again

Insecure, what ya gonna do
Feel so small, they could step on you
Called you up, answer machine, when the human touch
Is what I need, what I need is you

Let me breathe, if you'd let me breathe
They're all out to get you, once again, they're all out to get you

More of my favorite lyrics:

Estranged - Guns n'Roses
When you're talkin to yourself
And nobody's home
You can fool yourself
You came in this world alone
(Alone)

So nobody ever told you baby
How it was gonna be
So what'll happen to you baby
Guess we'll have to wait and see
One, two

Old at heart but I'm only 28
And I'm much too young
To let love break my heart
Young at heart but it's getting much too late
To find ourselves so far apart

I don't know how you're s'posed
To find me lately
An what more could you ask from me
How could you say that I never needed you
When you took everything
Said you took everything from me

Young at heart an it gets so hard to wait
When no one I know can seem to help me now
Old at heart but I musn't hesitate
If I'm to find my own way out

Still talkin' to myself and nobody's home
(Alone)

So nobody ever told us baby
How it was gonna be
So what'll happen to us baby
Guess we'll have to wait and see

When I find out all the reasons
Maybe I'll find another way
Find another day
With all the changing seasons of my life
Maybe I'll get it right next time
An now that you've been broken down
Got your head out of the clouds
You're back down on the ground
And you don't talk so loud
An you don't walk so proud
Any more, and what for

Well I jumped into the river too many times
to make it home
I'm out here on my own, an drifting all alone
If it doesn't show give it time
To read between the lines
'Cause I see the storm getting closer
And the waves they get so high
Seems everything We've ever known's here
Why must it drift away and die

I'll never find anyone to replace you
Guess I'll have to make it thru, this time
Oh this time
Without you

I knew the storm was getting closer
And all my friends said I was high
But everything we've ever known's here
I never wanted it to die

Never is a Promise - Fiona Apple
You'll never see the courage I know
Its colors' richness won't appear within your view
I'll never glow the way that you glow
Your presence dominates the judgements made on you

But as the scenery grows I see in different lights
The shades and shadows undulate in my perception
My feelings swell and stretch I see from greater heights
I understand what I am still to proud to mention, to you

You'll say you understand
But you don't understand
You'll say you'll never give up seeing eye to eye
But never is a promise and you can't afford to lie

You'll never touch these things that I hold
The skin of my emotions lies beneath my own
You'll never feel the heat of this soul
My fever burns me deeper than I've ever shown to you

You'll say "don't fear your dreams"
It's easier than it seems
You'll say you'd never let me fall from hopes so high
But never is a promise and you can't afford to lie

You'll never live this life that I live
I'll never live the life that wakes me in the night
You'll never hear the message I give
You'll say it looks as though I might give up this fight

But as the scenery grows I see in different lights
The shades and shadows undulate in my perception
My feelings swell and stretch I see from greater heights
I realize what I am now too smart to mention, to you

You'll say you understand
You'll never understand
I'll say I'll never wake up knowing how or why
I don't know what to believe in
You don't know who I am
You'll say I need appeasing when I start to cry
But never is a promise and I'll never need a lie

Who's gonna ride your wild horses?
You're dangerous 'cause you're honest
You're dangerous, you don't know what you want
Well you left my heart empty as a vacant lot
For any spirit to haunt
Hey hey sha la la
Hey hey

You're an accident waiting to happen
You're a piece of glass left in a beach
Well, you tell me things I know you're not supposed to
Then you leave me just out of reach

Hey hey sha la la
Hey hey sha la la

Who's gonna ride your wild horses?
Who's gonna drown in your blue sea?
Who's gonna ride your wild horses?
Who's gonna fall at the foot of thee?

Well you stole it 'cause I needed the cash
And you killed it 'cause I wanted revenge
Well you lied to me 'cause I asked you to
Baby, can we still be friends?

Hey hey sha la la
Hey hey sha la la

Who's gonna ride your wild horses?
Who's gonna drown in your blue sea?
Who's gonna ride your wild horses?
Who's gonna fall at the foot of thee?

Oh, the deeper I spin
Oh, the hunter will sin for your ivory skin
Took a drive in the dirty rain
To a place where the wind calls your name
Under the trees the river laughing at you and me
Hallelujah, heavens white rose
The doors you open
I just can't close

Don't turn around, don't turn around again
Don't turn around, your gypsy heart
Don't turn around, don't turn around again
Don't turn around, and don't look back
Come on now love, don't you look back!

Who's gonna ride your wild horses?
Who's gonna drown in your blue sea?
Who's gonna taste your salt water kisses?
Who's gonna take the place of me?

Who's gonna ride your wild horses?

^ good songs and good lyrics.  Wlid Horses is great.

I am enjoying the lyrics to Joe Jackson's "Breaking Us In Two."  It is sad but the music and lyrics are great!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6C-xazgqpPc

Don't you feel like trying something new
Don't you feel like breaking out
Or breaking us in two
You don't do the things that I do
You want to do things I can't do
Always something breaking us in two

You and I could never live alone
But don't you feel like breaking out
Just one day on your own
Why does what I'm saying hurt you
I didn't say that we were through
Always something breaking us in two

They say two hearts should beat as one for us
We'll fight it out to see it through
I say that won't be too much fun for us
Though it's oh so nice to get advice
It's oh so hard to do

Could we be much closer if we tried
We could stay at home and stare
Into each other's eyes

Maybe we could last an hour
Maybe then we'd see right through
Always something breaking us in two

Mother Nature's Son by Lennon/McCartney

Born a poor young country boy
Mother Nature's Son
All day long I'm sitting
singing songs for every one

Sit beside a mountain stream
See her waters rise
Listen to the pretty
sound of music as she flies
tu tu tu, tu, du tu

Find me in my field of grass
Mother Nature's Son
swaying daisies sing
a lazy song beneath the sun
tu tu, yeah yeah yeah

Ooo
Ooo
Ah, Mother Nature's Son

The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald - Gordon Lightfoot
Ohio - Crosby Stills and Nash
(probably not true but) The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down - The Band/Joan Baez

As the Spanish cops ridicule my gel
A mugshot I remember well
Little man, how you have suffered!"

Don't lose your way with each passing day
You've come so far, don't throw it away
Live believing, dreams are for weaving
Wonders are waiting to start
Live your story, Faith hope and glory
Hold to the truth in your heart

Another Park, Another Sunday ~ The Doobies Bros

Sittin in my room
Starin' out the window
And wonderin' where you've gone

Thinkin' back to the happy hour just before the dawn

Then take me disappearin' through the smoke rings of my mind,
Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves,
The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach,
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow.
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free,
Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands,
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves,
Let me forget about today until tomorrow.

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.

Lonesome Loser - Little River Band

Have you heard about the Lonesome Loser?
Beaten by the Queen of Hearts every time.
Have you heard about the Lonesome Loser?
He's a loser but he still keeps on trying.

Sit down, take a look at yourself
Don't you want to be somebody?
Someday somebody's gonna see inside
You have to face up, you can't run and hide.

Have you heard about the Lonesome Loser?
Beaten by the Queen of Hearts every time.
Have you heard about the Lonesome Loser?
He's a loser but he still keeps on trying.

Unlucky at love at least that's what they say
He lost his head and he gambled his heart away
He still keeps searching though there's nothing left
Staked his heart and lost, now he has to pay the cost

Have you heard about the Lonesome Loser?
Beaten by the Queen of Hearts every time.
Have you heard about the Lonesome Loser?
He's a loser but he still keeps on trying.

"It's okay." he smiles and says
But this loneliness is driving him crazy.
He don't show what goes on in his head
But if you watch very close you'll see it all

Sit down, take a look at yourself
Don't you want to be somebody?
Someday somebody's gonna see inside
You have to face up, you can't run and hide.

Have you heard about the Lonesome Loser?
Now tell me have you heard about the Lonesome Loser?

NEW HORIZONS LYRICS
Justin Hayward/John Lodge

Well I've had dreams enough for one
And I've got love enough for three
I have my hopes to comfort me
I got my new horizons out to sea

But I'm never going to lose your precious gift
It will always be that way
Cos I know I'm going to find my own peace of mind
Someday...

Where is this place that we have found
Nobody knows where we are bound
I long to hear, I need to see
Cos I've shed tears too many for me

But I'm never going to lose your precious gift
It will always be that way
Cos I know I'm going to find my own peace of mind
Someday...

On the wind soaring free
Spread your wings
I'm beginning to see
Out of mind far from view
Beyond the reach of a nightmare come true

Well I've had dreams enough for one
And I got love enough for three
I have my hopes to comfort me
I got my new horizons out to sea

But I'm never going to lose your precious gift
It will always be that way
Cos I know I'm going to find my own peace of mind
Someday...
Someway..

Show me an alley, show me a train
Show me a hobo who sleeps out in the rain

And I'll show you a young man
With many reasons why
There but for fortune, go you or I

Diamonds and Rust Joan Baez

Well I'll be damned
Here comes your ghost again
But that's not unusual
It's just that the moon is full
And you happened to call
And here I sit
Hand on the telephone
Hearing a voice I'd known
A couple of light years ago
Heading straight for a fall

As I remember your eyes
Were bluer than robin's eggs
My poetry was lousy you said
Where are you calling from?
A booth in the midwest
Ten years ago
I bought you some cufflinks
You brought me something
We both know what memories can bring
They bring diamonds and rust

Well you burst on the scene
Already a legend
The unwashed phenomenon
The original vagabond
You strayed into my arms
And there you stayed
Temporarily lost at sea
The Madonna was yours for free
Yes the girl on the half-shell
Would keep you unharmed

Now I see you standing
With brown leaves falling around
And snow in your hair
Now you're smiling out the window
Of that crummy hotel
Over Washington Square
Our breath comes out white clouds
Mingles and hangs in the air
Speaking strictly for me
We both could have died then and there

Now you're telling me
You're not nostalgic
Then give me another word for it
You who are so good with words
And at keeping things vague
Because I need some of that vagueness now
It's all come back too clearly
Yes I loved you dearly
And if you're offering me diamonds and rust
I've already paid

I move my feet
And with her hand
I feel my skin
And with her need
I find I'm saved
And with her dreams
I'm laid..."
