Subject: Sweetest ROCK Intros...

Written By: Badfinger-fan on 07/14/08 at 2:28 am

I love song intros, so much that there are times when I will line up anywhere from 10-20 songs, put on the headphones, crank up the volume and just listen to the intro..and then I'll move on to the next song. What are some of the best, or your favorites....
here's a few of mine:

Paradise City - Guns N' Roses

Stranglehold - Ted Nugent

You Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC

Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who

The Cult, Wildflower (Extended Rock Remix)  (5:50)

The original Wildflower was good, but it's the two or three seconds of guitar-only intro, and the loop of drum rolls at 0:16 and 0:23 that really set this intro above the original.

Billy Idol, To Be A Lover (Mother of Mercy) (6:37)

Here's a largely-synth track that opens up with an extended guitar riff, and for bonus points, throws in a Billy Idol doing his impression of a drag-racing announcer "SUPERSTARS!  The type of thrills and spills, you, the fans, want to see and hear!  Return to splendor, with Rock And Roll INFERNO!"

It's the little things that make the intro.

And while it's not exactly rock, I'm going to have to throw in the first 100 seconds of Sigue Sigue Sputnik's Rockit Miss USA (Madman vs. Speedranch).  I'm counting at least a dozen samples from everything from the Thunderbirds, to Dirty Harry, to The Matrix, and stopped counting explosions, gunfire, and shattering glass after the first minute.

Which reminds me, I've gotta do a writeup and send it to the samples thread on the lyrics page.

that's totally ok if it's not rock, and actually, the end song to the Matrix has a killer intro. if you have links to any of the ones you mentioned, we'd love to check em out.

Don't have links -- but a little searching on your favorite p2p client or the NET that you USE to find .alt ernative sources of .binaries that have .sounds in the .mp3 format should eventually get you something.  Especially if the .mp3s are .remixes.

The ending song to the original Matrix movie is Rage Against the Machine's Wake Up, and yeah, it also has a pretty awesome intro :)

As for links, I'll send you over to Born Again 80s, for ZZ Top's Sleeping Bag (Extended Mix)

Maybe I'm showing my age here, but I never got into grunge.  I'd have loved to have seen what would have happened ZZ Top's mid-80s attempts to combine rock with keyboards in Eliminator and Afterburner albums, and even Billy Idol's 1993 Cyberpunk) all turned out to be flashes in the pan.

I've enjoyed the resulting mash-ups and remixes (Jason Nevins, Norman Cook) and random mash-ups such as Bodyrockers/Runaround Girl (Music Factory Mastermix #230), or Pink/Get This Party Started (by DJs Divide and Kreate) who took ZZ's music and brought it to the mid-2000s, but I can't help but wonder how much interesting music we missed out on.  If only (and I apologize in advance to the Nirvana fans out there) we'd skipped the 90s era of atonal grunge, and spent a decade doing crisp, I would never have turned off my radio for the intervening two decades.

ZZ's electronic/guitar sound was truly 20 years ahead of its time.

The Spirit of Radio ~ Rush

Love that one. ;)

When it comes to intro's, AC/DC has some of the absolute best. "Highway To Hell", "Back In Black", "Who Made Who", and "For Those About To Rock" are all great, but my absolute favorite from them is "Thunderstruck".

My all time favorite though, "Baba O'Riley" by The Who. One of the best intro's ever. 8)

you obviously are a fan of remixes. I've found that I don't like some songs that have been converted into dance mixes, not sure if that's the same type of mix. for example "Total Eclipse Of The Heart"  luv the orig song, hate the dance mix.  I did find The Cult, Wildflower on youtube and I liked it. good referral  8)  and I am a fan of this one too Pink/Get This Party Started..I love her video

The funny thing is I knew that riff before I knew who David Bowie was.  It was just an FM hard rock standard along with songs by The Who and Led Zeppelin.  David Bowie maintains his credit with hard rock fans to this very day because of that familiar Ziggy riff.  It's a universal, like "Stairway to Heaven."  I heard that intro so many times it became imprinted in my brain!  Personally I'm more into the Berlin Era for Bowie and albums such as "Hunky Dory" rather than the harder rocking stuff.
