Sometimes it's the lyrics but more often it's the sound that just gives off a sad feeling to be (not necesarilly in a bad way, there's some romantic songs that are kinda tear inducing too). Also, there's times where if I really "get into" the song I can be saddened by the emotions, but if I'm just kinda casually listening to it it's still catchy.

Let's see:

Suddenly - Billy Ocean
How am I Supposed to Live Without You - Michael Bolton
Do What You Do - Jermaine Jackson
MOST Peter Paul and Mary songs (I do like them, but the ballads can be maudlin)
Somewhere Out there - Linda Rondstadt & James Ingram
Another Day in Paradise - Phil Collins
Love of a Lifetime - Firehouse (yeah, they were one of the late hair metal bands from 1990 but this is actually a touching love song you can take kinda seriously) ;)
I Don't Have the Heart - James Ingram
Hero - Enrique Iglaschious
Didn't We Almost Have it all - Whitney Houston

LOL hey, that's my favorite Journey song. ;)  My mom bought their Greatest Hits tape in '93 or 94 and that's one of the songs I remember liking the most. I like the easygoing synthpop sound (I guess it's middle tempo and noit quite a ballad), but I guess if you listen to the words and can relate to it, I can see how it would seem depressing. When I was a kid I only liked songs for how they sounded lol.

Hope things get better for you though. I do know how it feels to be able to personally relate to songs in a different way (which I didn't have until I was at least like 14 or 15).

I picked "Golden Slumbers/Carry that Weight" for my own list, but "She's Leaving Home" qualifies as well.  I kept my list to one selection per artist for brevity's sake.

"She's Leaving Home" is interesting for the time (1960s) because it takes the parent's point of view; when the boomer kids were rebelling and running off, the parents often wondered "What did we do that was wrong?" and "We sacrificed all of our lives..." etc.

Paul McCartney says the song was inspired by reading an article in the Daily Mirror of a girl who left home.

Wow I never thought of it that way, but I think you're right. It's even more unusual since in 1967 rock music was still too new to be the "parents' music" at all (it only started a little over ten years ago then), so it was on an album that basically just kids and younger people would've heard, but from the parents' perspective.

I'm not really a song crier, but I have a few.  :(

Gone Too Soon--Michael Jackson. I skip this track all the time because it makes me think of my mother, and how much I miss her.  :(

Purple Rain--Prince. Only if the song is performed live at a concert will I mist up. The version in the movie doesn't move me at all. LOL.

And don't laugh, okay,

Word Up--Cameo. It's not a sad song, I know that, but it was my mom's favorite dance tune and I mist up everytime I hear it.  :)

In the US

In the UK

22 Apr 1950 (If I Knew You Were Comin') I'd've Baked A Cake  Eve Young & The Homesteaders also has ten words in the title but is beaten by

1 Jan 1960  What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For  Emile Ford & The Checkmates

What about

9 Aug 1967  San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair)  Scott McKenzie.  Was that ever number one in the US?

Just a few more to add
My Immortal  - Evanescene is a song that I listened to everyday last Aug-Oct when my son went off to college for the first time,I cried everytime I heard it.it was the chorus that always got to me.
When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have
All of me

Right Here Waiting - Richard Marx. I sang this to Timmy one day when he was a baby,my husband laughs because 19 years later I still get misty eyed when I hear it.

I did a little digging on Wikipedia:

"San Francisco" was #1 in the UK and #4 in the US in 1967.

In 1950 "(If I Knew You Were Comin') I'd've Baked A Cake" was #1 in the US for best sellers in stores, which is the chart pop historians prefer (above radio and jukebox play) prior to the coming of the Hot 100 in 1958.

However, character for character, neither title is longer than "(Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song."

In his native UK, 'Never Never' was a bigger success than anything Feargal had done with The Undertones.  And just behind 'A Good Heart' remains his second highest charting UK single

Oh, I love the Undertones!

"A Good Heart" was a sentimental song I loved in my youth.  I still like it today, though some of its magic has evaporated over the years.  It was written by Maria McKee of the pop-country group "Lone Justice," which was great, surprising they didn't have more staying power.

Empty Garden( Hey Hey Johnny) the song Elton John wrote in tribute of John Lennon.

WOW!  What are the odds of that!?  I can't listen to that song if anyone is around! I love, love, love that song.  I can't believe anyone else would say that one! Another one of Elton's is Sorry Seems To be The Hardest Word.  I can't even get through that song without having to turn it off!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One ~ U2  That song gets me every time too.  It's just so emotional and the songwriting there is brilliant.  Probably in my top 5 favorites songs ever.  l LOVE U2!

Let It Be ~ John, Paul, George and Ringo    I remember seeing the documentary and feeling so sorry for them, because their friendship was gone, but they still had so much to say and didn't know how to say it, so they lashed out at each other. It was sad to see something so good turn so bad before your eyes.  When I hear the song I can always see how sad George was as he was playing it. He seemed like he was almost in tears.

Lots of Beatles songs do that to me, really.  The last part of Abbey Road:  Golden Slumbers, Carry That Weight, the End

The White Album's  While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Julia, Goodnight

The Christmas song that always makes me cry is John's Happy Xmas, War Is Over (even with Yoko's warbling!) It's just not Christmas to me if I haven't used a box of kleenex hearing that one at least once.

Tough to seriously say, but I've teared up to 'Nothing Compares 2 U', the Sinead O'Conner version.

Pearl Jam's cover of the Who's 'Love Reign O'er Me' gets me sometimes.

'Starry Starry Night (Vincent)' also gets me, I forget who makes it, but I think it's Bob Dylan. Idk though.

'I'll be Missin you', that tribute song to Notorious B.I.G. is by Faith Evans and P. Diddy, I think, and I cried once at that, just because of the sadness of it, and I wasn't even really a huge B.I.G. fan, either.

When I was 15 in 1995, both "Let Her Cry" by Hootie and the Blowfish and "Blue" by the Jayhawks made me cry.

Also, when I was 11, I cried when I heard them sing "Time in a Bottle" on "The Muppet Show."

And when I was 13, I remember that "Teach Your Children" by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young made me cry.

(Boy, that's really embarrassing. I don't think there's any place I could admit that, other than on the web  ;D)

Here is one which I don't think has been mentioned; "The World I Know" by Collective Soul. I very rarely cry over listening to songs, but this song in particular really hits me hard, because I can relate to it so much and I have felt that way in the past. It's such a powerful song.

Pearl Jam - Even Flow. It'll always remind me of Liz, my next door neighbor, who used to play Sonic while blaring the song. She died of a stroke in 2003.

This is an absolutely fantastic pop ballad, easily one of the best in history, but it's also such a tearjerker to me that it's sort of overwhelming to listen to. It exploits every possible existential insecurity you're likely to have and plays it on such an enormous scale. It's on a far grander level than just a basic armageddon track like so many that exist today because of how vulnerable its tone is. There's both a feeling of intense regret as well as a defeated acceptance. There is probably no other song in the world that makes life seem so precious and not to be taken for granted. It deserves to make far more people's saddest songs lists than it does. The Laura Branigan version is arguably even more poignant because she had such an untimely death, but it's the original that most people know about, even though most people nowadays associate it with the Jay-Z song that samples it.

Another one that reminds me of Liz is Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun." The first time I heard it, it was at her place and she was teaching me "the basics" to Sonic 3 (I'd apparently wanted to play on my own.) The lead singer of Soundgarden passed recently, too.
And yet again from Pearl Jam, "Jeremy." The subject matter itself's sad, but combined with the fact that this was another song Liz used to play makes me bawl like a baby every time. Still a damn good song, though.
Come to think of it, most of the songs Liz would play give me a sad feeling now. Yes, even stuff like "It's the Music" by Meat Beat Manifesto.

I was listening to this song today and it's honestly very catchy but at the same time the lyrics are sad and that was what made me cry. Something about the instruments in this song makes it have a sad feel to it as well which also kind of made me cry.

Most people are saying this song is about a 17-year-old boy named Bobby James who is constantly getting bullied in school, so he asks his friend for cash to resort to drugs. I have a good friend who is somewhat like this, so this song kind of connected to me in a way.

The very ending of the song is my absolute favorite part. It's just like one-minute instruments playing and it's very catchy and calming. Also, the part right before it is when the female vocals come in and I honestly love it.

Besides all the ones that I have already mentioned on this thread, the one that really gets me now is "You & Me Against the World" by Helen Reddy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJAKmWAIKcY

That was mine & my mother's song. The line that really gets me is "When one of us is gone and one is left to carry on..." Now, my mother is gone and I am left to carry on. I can't even get through the intro without bawling my eyes out-which I am doing as I post this song here. And yes, I'm thinking about my mother.

This one definitely, and I don't care if people considered it as "overrated". You still get the message out of it and it was emotional hearing this in the Fast & Furious 7 movie in honor of Paul Walker's life (after he got killed).
