Subject: The Disappearance of Cereal Mascots

Written By: whistledog on 12/13/09 at 8:30 pm

Is it just me, or do you not see many ads on TV with cereal mascots anymore?  I can't even recall the last time I saw Toucan Sam or Sonny, the Cuckoo Bird, among others.  Are they still shown in Commercials, or am I watching the wrong channels? lol

Got any favourite Cereal Mascot commercials?

When I was a kid, I used to love the commercials for Kellogg's Mini-Wheats.  These were only seen in Canada, where Mr. Mini-Wheat was quite popular (and much different from how he is animated for American Frosted Mini-Wheats commercials)

In the 80s, Mr. Mini-Wheat contemplated his frosted side ...

In the 90s, he was still unsure how people would take him (this one is in french) ...

Now he sings and dances in a series of ads that many Canadians will tell you are annoying and way overplayed, but I still love them ...

I still see Lucky From Lucky Charms.  It seems to me that Snap Crackle and Pop tried to make a comeback but it didn't work.  The Trix Rabbit still shows up but not as often.  They do seem to be disappearing.

mini-wheats mascots have been updated but they are still around... no longer debating wheat vs frosted tho... just nutrition and the values of a good breakfast.

like Dag I have seen the Trix rabbit and Lucky from Lucky charms..

Can't think of when I last saw the cheerios honey bee, the honey comb wild man or Captain Crunch... come to think of it when was the last time I saw I Fruity Pebbles commercial.

the truth is tho I haven't been looking that hard. I watch almost everything on DVR so I miss most ads... and I haven't watched kids programming in a long time.. I watch Spongebob, Danny Phantom, and Recess but I either sleep with them on or am getting ready for work so during the breaks I'm in the bathroom not watching the commercials... I'll have to start looking again.

someone should start a similar thread about the fast food mascots... the Noid, the animated BK not the scary guy they use now and Ronalds friends have all disappeared as well.

There's still Fruity Pebbles commercials, though now focused more on Pebbles & Bamm-Bamm than Fred & Barney

Where did you see the commercials?

Snoz mentioned kids programming...I don't watch much of it so maybe that is why I don't see them.  **shrugs**

I'll admit that I watch Cartoon Network, but only for Looney Tunes

Found a recent commercial

Ironically,  only adults would get the joke on the Hulk Hogan caricature since most kids probably don't have a clue about him.

Yeah I'm guessing all the ads we're thinking abouit would be on when kids are watching TV not parents because the mascots (like trix  ;)  are made for kids.... but I now I plan to pay closer attention to cereal ads

That's Adult Swim block for teenagers/adults.

Looney Tunes airs at 11:00 AM weekdays and been airing since mid November. I've posted a thread about the airings a while ago.

Though that's when most kids are at school and adults at work...  :P
