Subject: Photography over the years

Written By: bookmistress4ever on 01/07/11 at 7:58 am

I have a real interest in amateur photography and professional photography.  One of my Facebook friends posted this story about an amateur photographer in Chicago and I thought I'd share it here.  If you have any websites or anything really having to do with the subject of photography, I'm interested in looking at it.

Man... I never find treasures when I go to garage sales!  >:(

Too bad that woman never submitted any of her photos before.... I guess tho she was doing what made her happy and that was enough for her but imagine how rich she could've been.

The whole subject of street photography has gotten me to wondering... in today's society with everyone so privacy concious and security aware, would random photos of children be encouraged now-a-days?  I would love to just wander around taking random photos, but I also don't want to be thought of as a threat in any way.  What do you think?

Also, if you were browsing a yard sale or auction and someone's photographs came up for bid, would you buy them?  I've bought several photos and once a whole photo album, not knowing anyone in it, intending to scan them for antique photo sites and school photo collections.  It is one of my projects this winter, after I finish cleaning the house.

be careful if you do take pics of kids... I don't recall if I've posted this here before but I was at a paley event with the cast of Criminal minds and Matthew Gray Gubler tells this great story about when he was in NYC taking pics of kids.  the beginning of the story is a bit muddled basically he had surgery and was really skinny, (skinnier than he is now) and he had a full beard and was walking thru an NYC street and started taking pics of kids playing in a hydrant....

I made a movie about the organization that I used to volunteer for. Carlos was my cameraman. We filmed the programs that the organization did-like the food shelf, the clothing drive, etc. etc. One of the programs was a summer breakfast/lunch program for kids. Not only did they have free meals, they also had arts & crafts, & other stuff for kids to do. We sent out a letter to all the parents that we would be filming and if they had a problem, to let us know and we will make sure that their kid wouldn't be in the film. We didn't receive one objection-until AFTER we filmed. This one woman (who's kids weren't even signed up for the program but came anyway) had an issue with it. She was paranoid that someone would see that film and target her kids (they would be just one of many and there were no names mentioned). We had to erase much of our raw footage because her kids were in it.  >:( >:( The second time we showed up to film, her kids were there but we (and they) made sure that they were out of the camera's eye.

Just wanted to revive this thread because I stumbled across a video talking about the photography collection of the New York Public Library.  Apparently the library turns 100 years old tomorrow.  It is my goal to get there one day.

Here is the video about their photography collection:

Every year at palefest I meet new and fascinating people. This year I had the honor of adding two new members to the group I dub Paley Pals.
They are a mother and daughter from NC. The kid is something like 15 and she's a photographer. Her mom kept talking about it and I thoughtoh that's sweet. I like taking pics too.  Well we, the mom, daughter and myself have been communicating a lot via facebbok. Today I  finally  took the time to look at the kids work.  the kid truly has an azaing eye.

I saw a pic she took of a snail - and let me say snails are only slighty more tolerable than frogs to me. But her pic was beautiful.

So I've decided to post the link to her website here. Hope you all lke it too

For those of you on FB she has an Imagery by Avery FB page as well.

The Cindy Sherman photo replaced the previous "most expensive photograph"

99 Cent II Diptychon

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/bc/99_cent_II%2C_diptychon_-_Photo_courtesy_of_Sotheby%27s.jpg

The artwork 99 Cent II Diptychon from 2001 is a two part photograph made by Andreas Gursky probably in 1999, as the work is sometimes called "99 cent.1999".

The work depicts an interior of a supermarket with numerous aisles depicting goods resulting in a colorful work. The work is digitally altered to reduce perspective. The photograph is a chromogenic color print or c-print. It is a two part work, also called a diptych. There were 6 sets made and mounted on acrylic glass. The photographs have a size of 207 by 337 centimetres (6.79 × 11.06 ft).

The work became famous as being the most expensive photograph in the world when it was auctioned at Sotheby's on February 7 in 2007 for a price of US$3.34 million. Another auction in New York in May 2006 fetched $2.25 million for a second print, and a third print sold for $2.48 million in November 2006 at a New York gallery. These would be the fourth and sixth-most costly photographs sold, as of 2011.

I dunno... apparently I'm just not cultured enough to appreciate the value of this photo.  Maybe my tastes are much more simplistic.  Rich people make me nervous, I think this is why.  :-\\ ;D

That is not true because they shoot you first THEN they frame you. Personally, I love shooting birds.

Speaking of photobombs, here are a few more I found on FB:

Ahem.  What is this "FB" of which you speak?

First meme of the decade.

Not that we invented it, but we covered Sealbomber (aka interrupting seal) here on January 4, 2010, and our coverage is still the #6 reference in Google for "interrupting seal" as the first meme of the '10s.  'teens?  What the hell will we call this decaTHREAD VOID IF SEAL IS BROKEN :)

Cool.

I didn't reply to that thread, so maybe I didn't see it at the time.  ???  I would have sworn as much time as I spend here, I'd have seen it all.

Who knows?  Maybe I did see it, and didn't retain it, sometimes I think I'm catching my mother's Alzheimers Disease.  :-[ :(

Or you have a life.  (Could be something weird like that.)  I've spent so much time on the 'net that my brain is pretty much wired for meme recall and reference.  Sometimes it comes in handy.  (And at other times, you get stuff like that :)

Found this page on photography in Paris.  Simply lovely.  I'd like to take photos like this (maybe not in Paris, but whatever) someday.

Another discovery from the web...

An old asylum closed and the transition team came in and discovered an attic with lots of patient luggage in it.  Long story short... a photography project was born.  Kinda interesting but makes me sad too...

This thread started out mentioning Vivian Maiers photography.  She was the nanny whose cache of photos and rolls of film were found by a photographer after her death, and has caused a splash in the world of photography.  I want to say that I have seen an exhibition of her work and it is fantastic.  :)

This photographer, Brazilian photographer Vanessa Dualib, rearranges food items to look like animals.  So cute.
