Subject: Spot the Sample: Your Favourite Songs Reborn

Written By: whistledog on 03/30/11 at 9:18 am

Much of today's music, and even the music of yesterday uses elements from other songs.  Some you may recognize, others you may not.  Here is a ongoing thread chronicling some of them ...

One of the BIG hits of 2011 is 'On the Floor' by Jennifer Lopez.  Can you spot the sample?

Armand Van Helden and A-Trak, the American/Canadian duo known as Duck Sauce had a massive club hit with an hommage to a big nosed legend.  What was also awesome about the song was that not only did it sample a classic song, it also sampled a classic album cover ...

What's interesting about this video... The steel drum section is the DRSSB, which stands for Dutch Rhythm Steel & Show Band. Internationally known as Trinidad Oil Company... :D

^ That's cool.  That Calendar Song is quite bouncy.

Here's one from the 80s to the 70s.  Martin Fry and Mark White, core members of ABC, were big fans of Smokey Robinson, so they wrote a song about him and it became a BIG hit in 1987.  But not only was it a tribute to Smokey, they even sampled one of his songs.  Can you spot the sample?

Man, I remember both those songs.  Back in the day, De La soul were quite popular in the clubs.

I'm pretty sure S&M by Rihanna samples Master and Servant by Depeche Mode (some people say it samples 'Let's Go To Bed' by the Cure, which is similar, but considering M&S is also about S&M, im going with Depeche)

Duck Sauce - Barbara Streisand (2010)
Boney M - Gotta Go Home (1979)

Thanks.  They got the catchiest bit of the Boney M track and turned it into something awesome.  That made me look for the original Duck Sauce MP3, and during my search I stumbled across this little... well, gem is probably too strong a word.  But that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Turning their existing remix of Barbara Streisand into Barbra Streisand (O-God Remix) / Barbara Streisand (O-God Remix) couldn't have taken very long, and thrning that remix into Duck Sauce: Charlie Streisand (O-God Winner Edit) couldn't have taken more than an hour, but it was more than enough to get me laughing my ass off.  Long Live O-God, his blood is tiger, and the steel in his drums is made from the drop tanks from F-18s.   O-God took awesome and turned it into epic (duh!) winning!

You Know You're Old When: The music world is moving so fast that something that went viral in spring of 2010 is "retro" by the time the Charlie Sheen remix comes out in spring of 2011.

I dunno what's worse, the fact that I had to double-check "April" only to discover it was "March", and replace it with "spring", or that you were on it before I fixed it.  WINNING!

Dang, for a song that never made the US Top 40, it sure is getting quite the exposure.  I wonder what ol' big nose thinks about the song?

She now joins Michael Caine, Robert DeNiro and Clint Eastwood (among others) to have their name in a hit song title.

Song?  Oh, dear.  Now that I've looked, there's now a whole album.

There's an evil part of me that hopes she misses the point - that the song is actually a tribute to her - and that she flips out and sues everybody involved.

If she does, it'll be the second time the Streisand Effect has affected Barbra Streisand.  (In addition to being one of the few celebrities with a top 40 track named after her, she's pretty much the only celebrity who has an Internet truism named after her.)

^ I seen that album in stores.  'Barbra Streisand' is bringing fame in the US to the Boney M track, which in 1979, was popular almost everywhere but the US.

I was gonna say with the popularity of this track, we may see a Boney M reunion, but without the late great Bobby Farrell, it would not be the same

It wouldn't be the same, but I'd go see it.  Boney M was one of the few late-70s disco cheese acts that has stood the test of time.  I'll bet the surviving members can still bring it vocally, and the rest is up to the people behind the keyboards.

As for DJ Doug Laurent's take on it, I've got the album, have been listening to it over the past few days, and it's worth getting, if only for the novelty value.  The "Club Mix"es of tracks you remember are quick-and-dirty mashups of the original track against a more modern backbeat (in the way that 30 years ago, "Hooked On $FOO" could turn anything from Mendelssohn to ABBA into a pop hit by adding a back beat).

Back to 2011, the two 15-minute megamashupwhatevemrixes of Boney M tracks are worth the price of admission, and the mix of "Gotta Go Home" is, of course, the perfect template upon which to inflict any sample you like, you get the Marilyn Monroe version for free, and of course, you already have the Barbra Streisand and Charlie Sheen variants.

Mo were a shortlived Dutch band, and the song only made #18 in our Top 40. I don't think it made international charts (except maybe in some parts of Asia).

'Just Like Fred Astaire' was the 23rd UK hit for the group James.  I don't think it made much noise outside of the UK.  The album 'Millionaires' that it was released on did not even get a world wide release.  Back when it came out in 1999, I had to pay big bucks to special order it through a CD store.

The song uses heavy sampling from the original 1977 version by Italian singer/actress/tv host Raffaella Carra

The English version of the song (Do It Do It Again) was a UK #9 hit, and the original Italian version hit #3 in the Netherlands.

Duck Sauce vs. Boney M. vs. Barbra Striesand = 2010.
Duck Sauce vs. Glee = Spring 2011.
Duck Sauce vs. My Little Pony = Pony Sauce, Rainbow Dash.

(It was so simple, someone had to do it.)

Here is one that I still find quite clever:  In 2006, a house duo called Supermode had a BIG club hit with a song called 'Tell Me Why'.  It sampled the music and lyrics from two 1984 Bronski Beat songs:  'Smalltown Boy' and 'Why'

Supermode:  Tell Me Why

Supermode was a one single project from Steve Angello and Axwell, two DJs from Sweden who are now known as 2 thirds of the trio Swedish House Mafia
