maybe a bit cliche, but what is the scariest movie you've ever seen and why?

i dont easily get scared at movies, but one of the most violent ever is Cannibal Holocaust (1980).

I remember watching Stephen King's Rose Red on television almost a decade ago, and being pretty creeped out by that movie.

I also found the Halloween movies to be pretty scary the first time I watched them.

Night of the Living Dead was pretty creepy, too. It really had me on the edge of my seat.

When I was 9 I thought that Halloween's 4 thru 6 were the scariest movies ever! Michael Myers just looked so gruesome and mean in those installments.

And when I was about 7 I thought Freddy Kruegar was the scariest thing ever. I literally hid in my blanket at night while I was sleeping. Man, it was one cozy blanket.  ;D

In the 70's ... it was The Exorcist.   In the 90's it was Evil Dead.

I saw all of the early (and original) Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Streets etc...  and they were mostly predictable and relied on the obvious villain killing/chopping/cutting/slashing/spearing ... (well, you get the drift) his victims throughout the entire movie.

The Exorcist relied on the occasional visual shock sequence and the unknown/unexpected (for that time). Most good scary movies have a real element of suspense. Once the floodgates were opened on visual gruesomeness ... the movies had nowhere to go (plot wise) and became predictable and a little boring. We all became insensitive to the gore as well... :-\\

Evil Dead... was just simply ridiculous and way over the top. But at that time, it was new and, scared the crap out of me!!  ;D  All sequels were just plain silly (and NOT scary).

There was a recent Aussie horror flick " The Loved Ones" that had some sequences I had not seen before and made me wince a few times....

I'd rather watch an old suspense film ...like Rear Window. That is actually more scary than the so-called horror films!!!

'Critters' starring Dee Wallace and Scott Grimes.  When I was a kid, I was quite scared.
