Subject: Favourite instrumental songs

Written By: King Tut on 08/11/11 at 7:23 pm

I'm a fan of instrumental songs. I created this topic so we could post our some of our favourite instrumentals songs (classical music pieces are welcome) .

I'll start us off with 2 that have special meaning to me and are dear to my heart.

That Happy Feeling - Bert Kaempfert

Sometimes you might play one of them and say to yourself; "I have heard the tune before, but didn't know the song title or artist."

Great idea for a thread (although I think we've had a similar one in the past). :)

Ain't that that truth! And try Googling the lyrics... ;D :D

AFM: there's like a gazillion tunes that spring to mind... Let's start with these three:

James Last - Biscaya

After The Fire - 1980-F

possibly the two most different songs ever made.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iG--KuT1VGQ

i've got a real soft spot for this song because my grandparents used to listen to it all the time when i was a kid. on EIGHT TRACK (!), as i recall. pretty sure it was this version, or another like it. can't say i like the ventures version nearly as much. and then there's...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LArTxNnM77w

i got this along with "kill em all" on cassette tape when i was 15. i was just picking up guitar and loved the album but the operatic vocals kinda grated on me. this doesn't have any of that, and the elaborate interweaving of all the harmonizing guitar parts is just amazing.

You know that the original version has lyrics, and is sung by Vicky Leandros?  ???

On a similar vein:

Percy Faith - Crunchy Granola Suite

Originally sung by Neil Diamond, but this instrumental version is much better known in The Netherlands.

i do, but the goofy orchestral instrumental is the one i like.  8)

oo! actually this thread gives me an idea for a crossover with obscure 90s music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJP0l8pG4hI

NPR uses Pell Mell for bumper music and i think they turn up in the soundtrack for "six feet under" but when i put up a video on youtube of one of their songs, i got a message from their bassist's son! that's pretty obscure. i've got 2 of their CDs, all they do is this laid back, minimalist instrumental music. it's nice stuff.

I heard this song for years and never knew what it was. Try to track down an instrumental! What are you gonna do, HUM it to people?  ;)

The way I finally figured out what it was is that it was used in the (pretty bad) "Dark Shadows" movie starring Johnny Depp, and I checked out what was on the soundtrack. When I saw the name "Theme From A Summer Place" I immediately knew that was it, so I guess I knew all along. A pretty roundabout way to find out the name of a song.  ;)

Mike Post was also a prolific composer of instrumental songs used as TV themes.

"Theme From Mission Impossible" as recorded by half of U2 (1996): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okj7YaPD0Hs

This version of the song, as noted by the title, was the theme to the 1996 movie Mission Impossible. It was a moderate hit during the summer of that year. (Also it is a cover of the theme to the television show of the same name, recorded in 1966 by Lalo Schifrin.)

Some of my favorite instrumentals are by,  a Chilean group called Inti Illimani.  They play guitar, an Andean sort of banjo and sampollas which are similar to pan pipes. Here's a link

Of course there are so many more instrumental artists that I like, many to many to name, buut I thought many of you might not have experienced this genera.  By the way, I saw them live in Chile several times

Let's take it back to the '90s for one of my favorites,

Dave Koz and "You Make Me Smile" from 1993.

This one also goes back to the early 90's (at least in the States; it was recorded in 1989 in Europe)... "Lily Was Here" by David A. Stewart featuring Candy Dulfer (on sax):

When this one was a hit during the summer of 1991, it stood out to me due to the fact that it was instrumental. It's a great track to chillax with as well. O0 8)

A version by Andy Williams, which he sang, was also a hit on the charts. (That one, of course, is NOT instrumental.)

Thank you for posting this song. Takes me back to better times. I can never remember the name, but the instrumental pops up in my head from time to time.

"Eye Level" is a 1972 single by the Simon Park Orchestra. It was produced originally for the De Wolfe Music Library and selected by Thames Television to be the theme tune for their Netherlands-based detective series Van der Valk.

A song based on the music with lyrics added was called "And You Smiled", performed by Matt Monro.

This unique instrumental from a young Steve Winwood when he was still with the Spencer Davis Group has a fuzzy organ sound that presages what he would do with Traffic on "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" a few years later.

99% instrumental, they do say the song title at the fade out.
This song makes me think of the commercials for the Trillium nightclub. Northern Michigan’s only glass panel skyscraper at a whopping 17 floors, built in 1986. In recent years it went through a remodel and the fancy restaurant at the top is now the Aerie, but it will always be the Trillium to me.

that's fine, I respect that. I just had not realised that Larry covered it.

But I do know that he recorded other great instrumentals, including TV themes.

Thanks, I’ll have to do some looking. I used to hear his version of Sleepwalk on the smooth jazz station in 2003 and that’s the only song I knew by him.

I can help you out.

For example, he collaborated with Mike Post on the Hill Street Blues theme song, which I might have mentioned earlier in this thread. In case I didn't, here it is:

Here are two I am surprised I never mentioned yet as I am a big fan of both of these ...

Exchange - Into the Night (1987)

----------------------------------------

I always thought this one by Frank Mills was better than his most famous song Music Box Dancer, a song which I also love.  It actually charted higher in Canada, peaking at #11 (whereas Music Box Dancer only reached #47), but in the US, this only reached #48 (where Music Box Dancer had peaked at #3)

My dad went and saw Frank Mills perform a Christmas concert about a decade ago and he played this song and after it was over, some guy in the audience yelled "that's not a Christmas song" and Frank yelled back "It made my Christmas pretty good"

This one peaked at #75 on the US Hot 100.  Charles Fox is best known for his compositions for TV shows including Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley and The Love Boat

Charles Fox - Seasons (1981)

Hagood Hardy was one of those artists who had so many great songs, it was probably hard for the record label to pick which ones would be singles.  Well, with the exception of The Homecoming, as that one pretty much had hit written all over it

Here is one from 1981 called Runaway by Bill Conti.  It's from the movie For Your Eyes Only and appears during the ski chase scene.  It's a perfect marriage of a late 70s disco beat with early 80s new wave, and had this been a single, I think it would have been big in the clubs
