Subject: A Complete Guide To Dutch Music From The 1960's To The 1990's

Written By: Henk on 09/05/11 at 2:41 pm

...is NOT what you're gonna find here. :P

Instead it'll be me posting videos by Dutch artists. That includes the obscure (even to me!) as well as the internationally known - whatever I can lay my hands upon. They'll be listed alphabetically (by artist), and I'll probably be posting them at irregular intervals.
Wherever I can I will try and add some background information.

Hope you'll find this entertaining... :-\\

And off we go...with two One Hit Wonders. And when I say 'Hit', I use the term loosely. ;)

Acapulco - Bebida Magica (1980)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJmnwr1JKus

Acapulco were not really a band, but a studio project. The tune is not an original: it was first recorded by Chilean band Los Jaivas in 1978.

The Affair - Unbeatable (1986)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ENmG5iOPVA

Members of The Affair included Saskia van Oerle (a.k.a. Van Orly) and...Forrest!

After Tea

Not Just A Flower In Your Hair (1967 - NL #11)

and

We Will Be There After Tea (1968 - NL #16)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNZZymXXHs0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TTCV8V5B-I

After Tea consisted of several former members of The Tee Set, who left the band after a quarrel in 1967.
By 1971, After Tea had undergone several changes in its lineup and the band called it quits due to lack of success.
Some of the members even returned to The Tee Set...

I quite all of those, especially the Acapulco one.  I love the sound of the flute in popular music

I should do a thread like this for Canada, but it would probably get zero replies lol

The acapulco song is pretty.
The "After tea" songs are nice too, I prefer the "Not just a flower in your hair"

I like the Acapulco tune as well. Even though it never made Top 40, it's still a rather popular tune over here.

Yeah, you totally should. Don't let a lack of response keep you from doing so.

Regarding 70s or 80s music only, other than Tee Set and Golden Earring, which other Dutch acts made it to the other side of the Atlantic?

I haven't kept a list, but here are some that you might have heard of:

Diesel (Sausalito Summernight)
George Baker Selection (Paloma Blanca)
Pussycat (Mississippi)
Father Abraham (The Smurf Song)
Mouth & MacNeal (How Do You Do)

Father Abraham (real name Pierre Kartner) also wrote a song called " 't Kleine café aan de haven", which would become internationally known as The Red Rose Cafe.

Now I learned something, Diesel is from Holland. Sausalito summernight is one of my favorite songs from University days.

Most people are surprised to learn Diesel wasn't an American band at all.

With very few exceptions (Golden Earring and George Baker Selection), all Dutch artists were OHW in the US (I don't know about Canada) - whereas most of them had a string of hits in their home country.
All artists mentioned will get their share of attention in this here thread in due time. ;)

Three completely different acts this time...

Air Bubble - Racing Car (1976 - NL #7)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uuACF_X1wo

Sole Top 40 hit for this band, consisting of brothers André, Ben and Henk Groote along with Cor Mestebeld.
Prior to Air Bubble, brothers Groote formed a (less successful) band called Geebros.
Ben Groote also had (has?) a career in dream reading...

Jan Akkerman - Crackers (1978)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGyj-4E2hFs

Jan Akkerman, considered one of the greatest guitarists in the world, was a member of Focus, but he also had something of a solo career.
This tune failed to reach Dutch Top 40.

Alice Deejay - Back In My Life (1999 - NL #4)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldgwAAwj9zs

The biggest hit for this Dutch dance collective that included DJ's Jurgen, Svenson & Gielen, and Danski & Delmundo.

Sausalito Summernight by Diesel was a #1 hit in Canada!

I really enjoyed Alice Deejay as well as Candee Jay.  'Better Off Alone' by Alice Deejay was popular in Canada, but my favourite was 'Back in My Life'

Let's see what I can dig up next...

Alles - Murdock 9-6182 (1969 - NL #29)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAJswV2XHd0

I don't know much about this band, other than that it was a one hit wonder.

Alquin - Wheelchair Groupie (1975)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLV2xGY29Jc

Another rather obscure band. Kevin might like this, because it's prog rock.

Amber - This is your night (1996 - NL #16)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOaqgrtoMGo

You might now her (well, I know Jason does) because she's far more popular abroad than in Holland.

The first two were number 1 hits in the UK, I don't know about the third one. But that one is also well-known worldwide.

And that leads us to Anouk. She is by far the most successful Dutch female artist of the last 15 years, but has had little exposure/success abroad (although she did try). She was discovered by Barry Hay (of Golden Earring). He and George Kooymans wrote Anouk's first single Mood Indigo. The collaboration didn't last long, however.
Anouk was married (and divorced) two times: her first husband was her then producer Edwin Jansen. She then went on to marry Remon Stotijn (of Postmen), with whom she had three children. She divorced him in 2008 to (finally) start a relationship with Dutch rapper Unorthadox, who featured in the video for her 2000 single Michel. He was only 18 at the time of the shooting, reason why she waited another 8 years before hooking up.
The two had one child together (in 2010) before breaking up bad in 2011.
Anouk's #1 song Three Days In A Row (2009) is all about the video shoot for Michel and her crush for Unorthadox.

Nobody's Wife (1997 - NL #2, NOR #2, SWE #2)

Michel (2000 - NL #3)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOM1PjNyOQw&ob=av2n

Lost (2005 - NL #2, NOR #2)

Perhaps her best known song internationally.

Babe

Babe were a vocal trio (1979 - 1986), original line-up: Gemma van Eck, Monique Hagemeijer and Rita van Rooij.
Monique Hagemeijer was replaced by Margot van der Ven in 1980.
Gemma van Eck left the group in late 1982, and was replaced by Marga Bult.
The trio scored a total of 14 Top 40 hits, none of which peaked higher than #13.
To date, Babe are still the artist with the most Top 40 hits without scoring a Top 10 hit.

Here are some fine examples of their music...

Henk, I have been looking through this thread with great interest. I have always looked to your homeland
as a source of great music. I know not many on this forum like operatic/symphonic metal, DJ Blaze, not
many others so I wouldn't expect too much in that genre but maybe a mention or two. I know you're
going alphabetically so two of my favorite singers wouldn't be mention yet; Simone Simons (Epica) and
my favorite, as you know, Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation). Floor Janson (After Forever) is also in my
top three, I know they are no longer together but spectactular when they were. Maybe when you reach
the letter R she'll get a mention with ReVamp. Otherwise, great work you are doing with some great music.

Thanks Kevin. :) Replies like this (and others before you) make me feel it's still worthwhile keeping this thread alive.

I'm not sure ReVamp will get a mention later on, because I've limited myself to songs that charted in Dutch Top 40 in 1960-2000 period (with very few exceptions, like I did for Anouk). For that reason, After Forever hasn't been mentioned either. It's not because I don't like the bands.

Here's one that (some of) you will surely remember...

George Baker / George Baker Selection

Started as a band in the late 1960s by Hans Bouwens, with 15 Dutch Top 10 hits in 1969-1977 period.
From 1978 to mid-1982, George released a couple of less successfull solo efforts. Only two reached Top 10.
After that, he refounded the Selection, but by then the momentum had gone and musical tastes had changed.
The band still managed to scored one more Top 10 hit in 1985.

Here's just a selection of their hits...

Little Green Bag (1969 - NL #9, US #21)

I only know the George Baker Selection for Paloma Blanca, which was covered by Jonathan King in the UK.

Doesn't surprise me. After all, it was one of only two (three, counting Dear Ann) international hits.
I'm aware of the Jonathan King cover, and yes, before someone else mentions it: I also know the Wurzels version. ;)

"Take it ot leave it" is cute. The girl in Bennett and Bee reminds me of Bonnie Tyler ( looks, not voice)

No replies? Your bad! :P

I'm sure some of you have heard of these guys:

Bolland & Bolland

Brothers Rob and Ferdi Bolland.
They weren't very successful as singers (only 8 Top 40 hits in 1972-1992 period) although
one of their songs was successfully covered by Status Quo.
The brothers also produced this little ditty...
Anyway... these were their biggest hits in The Netherlands:

First I've heard of these guys.

I liked the first one 'Wait for the sun".  Spaceman is...meh..OK I guess.

I was listening to the Bojoura songs last week. I was waiting to respond because her voice reminds me of someone else. I was thinking of Susan Jacks (Poppy Family, Canadian group) but that's not the one.  Mary Hopkin? Nope, not her either...A little of both perhaps..but still thinking of who it sounds like. Maybe some others can come up with a better match.

Marco Borsato

The most popular Dutch singer of the past 20 years, with 15 #1 hits to his name,
after winning a talent quest in 1990 with a cover of Billy Vera's At This Moment.
Being half Italian, his initial songs were in Italian, but that didn't really catch on.
Real success didn't come until he switched to Dutch.
His 1994 song Dromen Zijn Bedrog held the top spot for a record breaking 12 weeks.
The record was only recently broken by Gusttavo Lima's Balada.

I think there's a perfectly good reason for The Boxx being a OHW.. ::) ;)
In the interview, the singer says they have material for "at least 10 albums", but in fact it has never even come to ONE.

I remember "Saturday night" by Herman Brood. Can't say I have heard that often since the latter part of the 1970s.

It's still a rather popular tune over here.

Thanks for more songs, Henk.

Their version of Donna is a nice remake of the song made popular by Ritchie Valens.  From the 2 made in the 1960s, I like “Tomorrow is another day” better than the other one.  Parts of it sound like “The Lettermen”, other parts remind me of earlier 60s folk songs with a later 60s borderline psychedelic flavor, it’s a cute song.  I tried listening to the 1990 song, but could only tolerate so much, it's not a style of music I enjoy.

BZN

BZN (Band Zonder Naam = Band Without a Name) were the most successful Dutch band ever.
They formed in 1966 as a 'regular' rock & roll band, without any major hits to their name until 1975
(8 Top 40 hits, none of which charted higher than #16).
In 1975, the band hit a low and radically changed course, attracting Anny Schilder as a lead singer.
The success happened overnight: all but one of their next 16 singles made Dutch Top 10.
In 1984, Anny Schilder left the band and was replaced by Carola Smit.
In years to follow, other original band members (with the exception of lead singer Jan Keizer) also left
to pursue solo careers, with mixed success.
The band itself continued to score hits, although their heydays had clearly gone
(31 more Top 40 hits in 1984 - 2007 period, only 7 of which made Top 10).
In 2007, the band called it quits - mainly because of health issues of lead singer Jan Keizer -
resulting in a hugely successful Final Tour.

Lead singers Jan Keizer and Anny Schilder reunited in 2010 and subsequently started touring together,
singing the hits of the heydays. This lead to controversy among diehard BZN fans,
who feel this as treason to the other band members.

If you like "Lea" you might also like their other work in a similar vein: "Where Did I Go Wrong", "Scarlet Ribbons", "Marian" or "One Way Wind", for example.

I deliberately picked one slow song and one more uptempo one, but I must say I prefer Lea over Be My Day too.

Centerfold.

Dictator - I like the song, nice typical 80s song which would fit right into a "Beverly Hills Cop" type soundtrack (or any Comedy/Action film soundtrack) from the mid 1980s.

Radar Love - Since I like Golden Earrings's great 70s driving song, I don't care much for this "Dance" version. Having said that, if I never heard the 70s "Radar Love", I might like Centerfold's version more.

(Too bad they don't have a song called "J. Geils band")  :D

Champagne

Yes, very ABBA. I'm sure there were LOTS of European bands in that time period that tried to copy the ABBA sound.  Both songs are alright.

Chaplin Band.

Not the style of music I like, although the first part of "Let's have a party" reminds me a bit of "Pick up the pieces" from AWB. Howard (if he ever visits this thread) will like "Let's have a party".

When I listened to the first one, I thought it was a cover of "Conquistador" by a band "Argentina".
Oops.  ;D

Holland did make it to the final in the WC1978 though. (and in 1974). Good club.

The second song "Continental Uptight Band" was nice. Thanks

It's easy to make that mistake, all the more so since it's an instrumental track. On the other hand: I'm doing this topic by alphabet...

I think that highly contributed to the success of the tune. (Not saying the tune is terrible or anything!)

What I don't really get is why the band is listed as "prog-rock". :-\\

Sorry Henk, I actually did listen to parts of the song over a week ago. Wasn`t to my taste so I didn`t comment on it. I probably prefer the 60s, 70s and 80s music you post. Just personal preference.

Yes indeed, quite remarkable. He also had a #28 hit in 1969 with a song called Nathalie (sung in Dutch), but that's where his popularity in Holland ends, hit wise.

Quite a few, mostly in French, German or Spanish, but also in Italian, Portugese and various other languages.

From the start of the official Dutch Top 40 in 1965:

1965: Quand le soleil dit bonjour aux montagnes (The French Song) - Lucille Starr
1968: Ich bau' dir ein Schloss - Heintje
1968: Heidschi Bumbeidschi - Heintje
1971: Du - Peter Maffay
1971: Borriquito - Peret
1971: Non non, rien n'a changé - Les Poppys
1972: Après toi - Vicky Leandros
1972: Un canto a Galicia - Julio Iglesias
1972: Ich hab' die Liebe geseh'n - Vicky Leandros
1973: Le Lac Majeur - Mort Shuman
1973: Rote Rosen - Freddy Breck
1973: Schönes Mädchen aus Arcadia - Demis Roussos
1975: Hey mal yo - Johnny & Orchestra Rodrigues
1975: Dansez maintenant - Dave
1976: Mon amour - BZN
1979: Quieremo mucho - Julio Iglesias
1980: Sajang é - Massada
1980: Santa Maria - Roland Kaiser
1982: Ein bisschen Frieden - Nicole
1983: 99 Luftballons - Nena
1983: Codo - D.Ö.F.
1988: Yeke yeke - Mory Kante
1989: Lambada - Kaoma
1990: Verdammt ich lieb' dich - Matthias Reim
1990: Sadeness (part one) - Enigma
1994: La solitudine - Laura Pausini
1996: Hava naquila - Party Animals
1996: Macarena - Los Del Rio
1997: Alane - Wes
2000: Que si que no - Jody Bernal
2000: Wer bisto - Twarres
2002: Perdono - Tiziano Ferro
2002: The ketchup song (Assereje) - Las Ketchup
2004: Ramaganana - Treble
2004: Dragostea din tei - O-Zone
2005: Das kleine Krokodil - Schnappi
2006: Boten Anna - Basshunter
2009: Rap das armas - Cidinho & Doca
2010: Alors on danse - Stromae
2010: We no speak Americano - Yolanda B Cool & DCup
2011: Danza kuduro - Don Omar & Lucenzo
2012: Ai se eu te pego! - Michel Teló
2012: Balada - Gusttavo Lima

Of course, if it's not in English or German (or French) we have no idea what the song is about...so success guaranteed! ;D

Starting At The End was only a minor hit in the Netherlands. It only reached #27. Of course, by then lead singer Debbie Jenner had traded in her original Pins for a set of new ones. I don't think that was a particularly smart move.

I've no doubt Debbie was musically inspired by Melanie, but she wasn't half as successful. That's probably why she switched to more MOR/disco-ish music in the 1980's. Didn't help her, though.

Indeed he was. Herman Brood also was our one and only true rock'n'roll junkie. He jumped off of the roof of the Amsterdam Hilton in July 2001.

Sausalito Summernight (1980 - NL #35, US #27 )

I am pretty sure "Sausalito Summernight" is my favorite Dutch song ever. I love the song. I am fairly certain it did very, very well on the Canadian charts, a popular song here in 1981.  A song about a road trip to San Francisco.

I'll never get to letter Z at this rate... ::)

Dizzy Man's Band

8-piece band that started out as a CCR clone, but gradually moved to a less pretentious style of rock.
With 15 Top 40 hits in the 1970s to their name, they are one of the most successful bands of the era.

Hope there's still some interest for this thread, with warped gone... :-\\

D.J. Blackfoot feat. Shanti - Run Things (1993 - NL #25)

Both the artists and the song have faded into obscurity...fast!

DJ Jean & Peran - Let Yourself Go (1997 - NL #29)

DJ Jean - The Launch (1999 - NL #1/UK #2)

DJ Jean (Jan Engelaar) has had more Top 40 hits to his name, but I've limited myself to the ones that charted in the 1990s.

But hey, let's not give up!

Skipping quite a few artists here... (either because they only sang in Dutch, or because they only scored hits in the 2000s and onward). Next in line is:

Doenja - A Groovy Kind of Love (1983 - NL #45)

Sorry - I can't find any useful information on the artist.

Dolly Dots

Unarguably the most popular all-girl group in Dutch pop history, with 25 Top 40 hits to their name.
Formed in 1979 as a six-girl group (Angela Groothuizen, Ria Brieffies, Patty Zomer, Esther Oosterbeek,
Angéla Kramers and Anita Heilker), reduced to five after Anita left the group in 1985.
Had their own tv series in 1983, followed by a movie in 1986 ("Dutch Treat" - not very well received).
Finally split up in 1988, when an international breakthrough failed, with brief reunions in 1998 and 2007-2008.
Ria Brieffies died in 2009 (aged 52) as a result of lung cancer.

  - Dolly Dots, Hela di ladi lo, 1980.

Back in the day, younger me had only the radio to guide my ears, and had no idea he wasn't listening to Boney M.  I remember having an audio tape recorded off the radio and had penciled it in as a Boney M song.  Okay, maybe some band Cubans.  Latinas?  Florida?  The Netherlands would have been amongst the last countries I would have thought was behind this little gem.

So they DID get international exposure, just not the breakthrough they were hoping/aiming for. Maybe Hela-di-ladi-lo wasn't the best way to try... On the other hand: it managed to impress at least ONE person!
FYI: the song reached #6 in the Dutch Top 40, and was one of 11 Top 10 hits the girls scored.

By the mid-1980s, the girls had outgrown their "girly" image and they tried their hand on more serious stuff. That also meant they stopped scoring Top 10 hits.

Only The Rain was their best shot, reaching #13 in 1985.

What A Night (1987, #18) turned out to be their farewell single. Even the assistance of SAW didn't help.

Latest news on the Dolly Dots: apparently there is going to be a reunion concert later this year.
