Subject: Reggae!

Written By: Henk on 02/20/12 at 2:50 pm

Let's start another topic that won't get much traffic. :D

Reggae...not much loved around the boards, unless I'm mistaken. Now I'm not claiming to be a fan myself. Reggae, in essence, is rather bland and repetitive, if you ask me: you heard one, you heard it all. But still - it was popular (at least where I live) for about a decade (ca 1975 - 1985). After that, it became very much extinct (on the radio and in the charts) with one noteable exception: UB 40.

So here I'll post some random reggae music, just to keep the vibe alive. Feel free to add as well as any comments.

You can't have a reggae thread without these two:

Bob Marley & The Wailers - Stir It Up

Peter Tosh - I'm The Toughest

Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, reggae legends indeed!

My all-time favourite band ever is a reggae group, and you can't have a Reggae thread without them, and I am talking about ...

UB40!  They had over 50 hit singles, but here they are with the seldom heard hit 'Groovin' from 1990 which was seemingly only a hit in the United States and the Netherlands.  Apart from the album 'Labour of Love II' in 1989, it never made an appearance on a UB40 Greatest Hits album until a 2008 release simply titled 'Greatest Hits'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kuEqIdCLj8

This one is a guilty pleasure of mine.  It never charted in North America, but was a Top 40 hit in the UK and several other parts of Europe ...

Sophia George - Girlie Girlie (1985)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDKb4O-l02U

This one also from 1985 may be my favourite reggae single of all during the 1980s ...

Amazulu - Excitable
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5HuQ0DHHoQ

However it has been debatable whether Amazulu were Reggae or Ska or Pop.  I say they were all three, but there's no such genre as Regskapop ;D

Last but not least, here's one by a non reggae group from 1982 called 'Sunshine Reggae' by Danish pop duo Laid Back.  They were best known as one hit wonders in the US for 'White Horse', but 'Sunshine Reggae' made them a 2 hit wonder in Canada when it peaked at #34 in 1984 8)

Here's a few entries into the Reggae world from Canada ...

The Tenants - Sheriff
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQ1QmAvDtkE

Allen Harris - Sunshine Reggae
This one was actually a B-Side when it charted, and is a cover of the Laid Back song from 1982.  The A Side was a medley paired with a cover of 'La Vie En Rose' by Nancy Martinez, and is the most commonly heard version, which is the one in this video ...

The Sattelites - Gimme Some Kinda Sign

Snow - Everybody Wants to Be Like You

The band Inner Circle is also a reggae group. In the U.S. they had a couple of big hits, "Bad Boys" (originally released in 1987, but revived six years later as the theme to Cops) and "Sweat (A La La La La Long)" (also a hit in the early-to-mid 1990s).

I did mention UB 40 in my initial post. They've had over 30 Top 40 hits in my country, so they're rather hard to miss. ;)

'several other parts of Europe'... like the Netherlands (#2!)

Not reggae in my book. Closer to ska.

I wouldn't call any of these 'reggae' (apart from the Allen Harris song, obviously), but feel free to disagree.
BTW: some serious bad acting in that Sattelites video! ;D

Now let me entertain you with some original Dutch reggae. In spite of its popularity over here (as a musical genre), there weren't many Dutch artists trying their hand at it. This is about it:

Uncle Ruud doing reggae? Hmph...these football stars should stick to one thing!

(Yes, that includes you two!  ::))

Anyway, reggae...quite like Holland, the British fixation with it seems to have waned a little, but it's still out there somewhere...

This was a huge British hit in 1979, probably the biggest 'lover's rock' hit ever!

Hey, that ain't half bad. Sounds like something that could easily have made the charts over here - but it didn't.

Rather strange, as quite a few reggae tracks had just as much (if not more) acceptance in Holland...(how would I know? Well, I have several Dutch reggae compilation CD's!)

I first heard and heard of Reggae when my sister and her boyfriend got back from a trip to Greenwhich Village in 1981.  They holed up in a squat on Bleecker Street with a bunch of Rastafarians where they picked up Reggae (and one or two things requiring medical attention).  Bob Marley had just died that spring, which injected new consciousness into the Rasta movement.  I added "Rastafarian" and "Jah" and "ganja" to my vocabulary.

We didn't have any bona-fide Rastafarians in New Hampshire, though some did come up in the fall to work the apple orchards.

Ironically, the first Reggae group to score a top 10 in the U.S. wasn't Bob Marley and the Wailers, but this one hit wonder in 1983:

Musical Youth: Pass the Dutchie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUH1XmFb05Y

Original: Pass the Kouchie (Stibbles/Mittoo). Musical Youth changed the original lyrics from "Pass the Kouchie" (marijuana) to "Pass the Dutchie" (crock pot) for obvious reasons.

In the mid-1990's, Jamaican-born reggae artist Ini Kamoze had a big hit called "Here Comes The Hotstepper"; it also incorporated elements of hip-hop.

Good choice,  Speaking of 90s Reggae, we mustn't forget Apache Indian and his hits like Arranged Marriage and the immensly overplayed Boom Shack-a-Lack ...

And speaking of Jimmy Cliff, in 1993 or so he recorded a cover of Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now"; Cliff's version was a big hit on the U.S. Adult Contemporary charts in late '93/early '94.

I was about to say "Reggae?  No, he was part of that Bhangra revival, listen to Caste System, and..."

...and it's been more than 20 years, and it wasn't until tonight that I heard the "rude boy" 29 seconds into 1993's eloquent-yet-danceable rant against India's Caste System (from Nuff Vibes EP).  Well-played, Sir!

And now for something completely different, and almost as obscure:

sH9tMNepAJ4

  - Tack>>Head, Stealing, from a 2009 live performance.

Tack>>Head started as a mashup of mid/late 80s industrial-dub-funk, using a slap bass alongside a farkton of samplers in order to get a percussive sound.  The individual artists (Keith Lebanc, Gary Clail, Skip McDonald, Doug Wimbish, Bim Sherman, Marc Stewart, and Adrian Sherwood), via their respective side projects, are still collaborating today.  Every few years they get together and jam.  Now I've gotta dig out my Fats Comet and Little Axe stuff.

Which reminds me, it's been a year or two since I looked - ZOMGWTF, look what I just found!

Thanks for the above posts, guys. 8)

Here's a couple that I was reminded of recently.

First off, what about this 1988 live version of a 1984 version of an original 1977 song (written by David Bowie, performed by Iggy Pop)..?

Tonight - Tina Turner feat. David Bowie

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4WG_y7owmM

It was a #1 hit in The Netherlands, but I don't think it was as big in the Northern American charts.

And then there's this...

Walking On The Moon - The Police

Maybe you're thinking 'That's not really reggae, is it?'. Then have these two!

Lady - Wayne Wade

(maybe you prefer the Kenny Rogers original - but that's not reggae!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzfVbu-kHqg

Stop That Train - Clint Eastwood & General Saint

(Again, not an original - but the only version to make our charts)

That's what I was thinking the other night about the Tack>>Head track, but dub is what you make it.

Dypuxae5uIQ

  - Little Axe, Out in the Rain and Cold, from 1994's The Wolf that House Built.

And a lot of interesting vinyl covers suggesting avenues for future exploration.
