Subject: GaGa is not original

Written By: Tam on 02/28/12 at 12:28 am

Stop me if this has already been done.

I am so annoyed with some of the kids (I say kids referring to those who are 20 years or so younger than me) saying that GaGa is progressive and innovative and bringing about this new music that simply blows your mind. Umm... I hate to be the bearer of bad news, (well, no not really) but she is a rip off artist. Plain and simple.

Y'all know that I said that her Born This Way sounds exactly like Madonna's Express yourself.

Well, today I am listening to music hits or whatever it is that is the music channels on cable. So yeah, I am listening and in the kitchen cooking at the same time. I have the water running, rinsing my rice for the cooker, and I hear this line and I freak because I think they are actually playing KLF and Tammy Wynette!!!! I was almost 100% certain of it!!

I shut the water off and run into the livingroom to turn it up - and to my dismay... It was freakin' GaGa and her Bad Romance!
Seriously! >:(

So that sent me on a rampage because I couldn't believe I found another song that the gimmick has ripped off!

Take a listen and tell me if I am way out in left field. (Yes, there have been times I was certain of other songs, only to be wrong, so I want to make sure I am not the only one hearing this.)

I recognized the Express yourself / Born This Way resemblance the first time I ever heard 'Born This Way'

Now that you mention it, I do see a similarity with KLF and Bad Romance.  She could be unknowingly inspired by these songs and not even realizing it; Something similar happened to the Rolling Stones in the 90s, but in Gaga's case, I highly doubt it was accidental.

I do like Gaga's Edge of Glory for that sweet sax solo, which reminds me of the 80s, but I'm starting to now think she ripped that off from someone lol

I like some of her music, but she just tries WAY too hard to be outlandish and I'm bored with it.  Much in the same way I became bored with Madonna.  (Though, in retrospect she was damned tame and I still love her!)  But I digress.  Coincidence?  I THINK NOT!  ;)

How many times can I contradict myself in one post?  ;D

What I was trying to say, is that I like their music, but not their attention whoring.

Bad Romance also borrows the "ma ma ma ma" line from the Boney M song Ma Baker, since Lady Gaga "prides" herself on being cutting edge music wise, I don't know why she didn't do some crazy dubstep stuff like Madonna did with house music in the late '80s/early '90s.

The whoring happens long before the girl sets foot on stage!

I mean, I sympathize with Tam's complaint, but of course they're going to call it "original."  They're not going to say, "Here are the results of eight months of market research!"

A handful of people actually want to venture into "original" territory.  "Original" sells like "new and improved," but really consumers want the familiar and investors want a sure thing.  So goes the music industry.

There are exceptions, such as Björk.  However, Björk is rather tame when it comes to "original."

I guess it depends on how "original" you want to get!

I'd hate to listen to the 12" mix if that.

Joan La Barbara is a star of the Downtown music scene.  I wouldn't be surprised if some pomo dj hasn't mixed "Shamansong" on the fly.  You'd be surprised what you can put to a 4/4 beat!
