Subject: Favourite Character Actors

Written By: whistledog on 03/01/12 at 9:10 pm

In 2005, when Warner Bros. made a theatrical film based on 'The Dukes of Hazzard', they got an actor by the name of M.C. Gainey to play Roscoe P. Coltrane, and alot of people questioned why they did not get a known actor to play that role.  I was one of the few to respond "Um, they did?"

If you don't know the name, you will know the face ...

The question isn't what M.C. Gainey has been in, but what hasn't he been in.  The first time I ever saw him was as a crooked cop in 'Starman' (1984).  He was quite young in that film, and if you watch that movie now, versus what you see in that picture above, you wouldn't even recognize him.  He is great at playing the bad guy, and for those of you 'Justified' fans, you definately know him as Bo Crowder 8)

Alot of character actors dfo not get the recognition they deserve, so let's all pay tribute to some of the great ones ...

Richard Lynch!!  I can never remember his name ( had to do a search for it) but he's been in a ton of movies. Usually plays a villain or evil character in horror movie.

In 1967 after taking LSD (acid), he set himself on fire in Central Park.

I remember him from 'Invasion U.S.A.' and 'Little Nikita'.  A good bad guy indeed!

Mykelti Williamson is in my favourite movie of all time - Streets of Fire.  The best role I think he had was as Baby-O in 'Con Air'

Luke Askew
R. Lee Ermey
Harris Yulin
Patrick Kilpatrick
Harry Dean Stanton
Claude Akins

From that list, I knew these ones right away.  Patrick Kilpatrick always plays a bad guy, or a cold blooded killer; First saw him in the film 'Remo Williams: the Adventure Begins', but I think my favourite role of his was as Sandman in 'Death Warrant'

I've always liked him. The first thing I remember seeing him in was What's Up, Doc with Barbara Streisand. It was also the debut of another very talented and great character actress the late Madeline Kahn. ( :\'()  Very funny movie.

Here is another one:  James Remar is somewhat of a known star, but he never became a big star.  He is perhaps best known as Ajax in 'The Warriors' (1979) or as Richard Wright on the TV series 'Sex and the City', but for his role as Albert Ganz in '48 Hrs' (1982), he gets my vote for playing one of the 10 greatest villains in movie history ...

Oh, Madeline Kahn.  I liked her in 'Clue' and on the TV series 'Cosby'.  It was sad when she passed :(

Ahhh James Remar. I loved him in Warriors, but loved him moreso in my all time fave ABC tv series Mystic Warrior (1984) in which he played the main bad boy villain.

J.K. Simmons made such a vivid impression on me as the evil, sadistic Nazi inmate Vernon Schillinger in the HBO prison drama Oz that it's still kind of hard for me to see him in other roles, particularly as the goofy professor in those Farmers commercials.

Mykelti Williamson is on my current favorite show, Justified, as Elllstin Limehouse, the leader of a enclave of descendants of freed slaves in the hills of Eastern Kentucky. His character is also shaping up to be quite sinister.

My own favorite character actor would have to be Joe Pesci.

I wouldn't call Joe Pesci a character actor, as by name and face, he is a household name, but he is a great actor.  Speaking of Lethal Weapon 2, there is a great character actor within it:  DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY!

Joss Ackland.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ucMnsT-LbwU/TUaGRgPOpGI/AAAAAAAAAQg/4-Ih91BB7oU/s1600/joss-ackland.jpg

He has been in over 130 films since the 1940s, but is perhaps best known for his role as Rudd, the minister of affairs for the South African Consulate in 'Lethal Weapon 2'.  He was also in a 1988 movie titled 'It Couldn't Happen Here', which was a musical starring and based on the music of The Pet Shop Boys, thus as a result, Ackland appears in the video for their smash hit 'Always on My Mind'

No Character actor topic would be complete without the great British actor Steven Berkoff

http://rogermortonphoto.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/steven-berkoff-bw2.jpg?w=240&h=300

He is best known for his villainous roles including General Orlov in Octopussy (1983), Victor Maitland in Beverly Hills Cop (1984) and Col. Pedovsky in Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985).  In my opinion, Victor Maitland is the greatest villain in movie history, and I pray they never remake Beverly Hills Cop because no one could ever play Maitland like Berkoff did.  Just a fantastic role!

In 1997, he lent his voice to the song The Mind of the Machine by the group N-Trance and it reached #15 in the UK Singles chart ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8td_ETJeGGw

He was last seen in the 2011 American remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and before that, the 2010 film The Tourist
