Subject: The Beatles - Cover Songs

Written By: whistledog on 04/06/12 at 8:12 pm

Over the years, there have been many covers of Beatles songs.  Some good, some bad.  We all know quite a few of them, but rather than me list them all, part of the fun is everyone contributing which ones they like, don't like, or just ones that are out there for the listen.  Here's a well-known one to get the ball rolling ...

Stars on 45 - Beatles Medley (1981)

The album version of this was released in a condensed single version with the guitar riff of Venus by Shocking Blue and a chorus from The Archies' Sugar Sugar.  In North America, it's official title was:  Medley: Intro Venus / Sugar Sugar / No Reply / I'll Be Back / Drive My Car / Do You Want to Know a Secret / We Can Work It Out / I Should Have Known Better / Nowhere Man / You're Going to Lose That Girl / Stars on 45

In some countries, such as the UK, it was simply called Stars on 45 by Starsound

It's success spawned a Medley II (1981), which contained Beatles or Beatles related covers as heard in the last 4 minutes of the album version:  Good Day Sunshine / My Sweet Lord / Here Comes the Sun / While My Guitar Gently Weeps / Taxman / A Hard Day's Night / Things We Said Today / If I Fell / You Can't Do That / Please Please Me / I Want to Hold Your Hand / Stars on 45

Their 1969 hit "Come Together" was covered in the 70's by Aerosmith:

I thought this one was so-so.

The Beatles themselves have also recorded a few covers, including "Twist And Shout" (originally by the Isley Brothers), and "Money (That's What I Want)" (originally by Barrett Strong).

Anyone with vocal chords has covered a Beatles song, this could go on forever.

...how many covers of "Yesterday" are there?

This reminds me, in the Alvin Stardust song 'I Feel Like Buddy Holly', he has a great lyric ...

Now I know what Paul McCartney meant when he got up to say, "I wish it was yesterday"

I once heard a cover of "And I Love Her" that sounded like smooth jazz, and it sounded pretty good, but I don't know who performed it. :-\\

A song that could have been written especially for this legend...

And while not strictly a Beatles song (although it was written by L&Mc) this is sufficiently off the wall to interest me (you may have to turn your volume up!)

Anne Murray did "You won't see me"    And who did "Got to get you into my life", was that Earth wind & fire?

Nice topics on your website.
