Subject: Movies with sad endings.

Written By: warped on 08/25/12 at 4:37 pm

We just finished watching "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" 2008.

Synopsis:  "Set during World War II, a story seen through the innocent eyes of Bruno, the eight-year-old son of the commandant at a concentration camp, whose forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy on the other side of the camp fence has startling and unexpected consequences."

Really has a sad ending

Just made me think. Not every movie ends with "happily ever after". What movies have you watched that have a sad ending?

We've done this before but tge Boy w/ the Striped Pajamas was a really good, tragically sad movie.

The Champ with Ricky Schroeder always gets me.
Nightmare in Badham County
Imitation of Life (both versions) but I cry harder when I see the '59
Lady Sings the Blues (for obvious reasons)
Testament

What's that movie based on the Steven King story about the people trapped in the grocery store...the mist? Or something.

Night of the Living Dead

One Day (with Anne Hathaway)

Agreed

Schindler's List, too.  I know he saved a bunch of Jews but the scene where he realized how much more he could have done was heart wrenching.

American History X
Saving Private Ryan
The Perfect Storm

Subject: Re: Movies with sad endings.

Written By: gumbypiz on 08/26/12 at 9:43 pm

All the ones off the top of my head...

Easy Rider (1969)
Mean Streets (1973)
The Green Mile (1999)
Thunderbolt & Lightfoot (1974)
Dog Day Afternoon (1975)
The Virgin Suicides (1999)
Vanishing Point (1971)
Soylent Green (1973)
The Last Detail (1973)
Old Yeller (1957)
Dead Presidents (1995)
Looking for Mr.Goodbar (1977)
American Beauty (1999)
The Fly (1986)
Vertigo (1957)
One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest (1975)
The Ice Storm (1997)
Love Story (1970)

Odd thing is that a lot of these are from the 70's (some of that are not are set in the 1970's). There was a definite trend in the 70's to have movies end on a down note, wonder why that was..or maybe its just me. :-\\

Love Story (1970)

The classic sad ending.

To be truthful, I forgot that part. In fact I don't even remember it. Maybe there was a little alcohol involved when I saw it?

There just might have been a trend beyond just film in the 70s, I know it's worthy of another thread but some fantastic "early to mid" 70s songs were a little depressing too.  Some that come to mind:

Alone again naturally, At 17, Without you, Run Joey run, Wildfire, If, All by myself, How can you mend a broken heart, Rainy days and Mondays, Seasons in the sun, Living without you, Even now, I'm not in love, Shannon, One, Goodbye To love, So far away, Sylvia's mother, Feelings, Everything I own...

Underrated film: The Parallax View

Underrated song: A Split Second, The Parallax View.

There's better audio out there, but this video appears to be a NYC DJ's copy of his own video remix from 1992 salvaged from ancient videotape.

(Linked, not embedded, because the guy sampled everything from political speeches to commercials to the Hindenburg disaster to Heavy Metal to SNL skits to Superman to old civil rights era films to MTV trailers to Gulf War I footage, to Daffy Duck, to From the Earth to the Moon to... well, if you throw all that in there, there's bound to be a couple of scenes in it that probably aren't safe for work.  I don't even want to know if there was an official video, as of today, this is the official video.)

But the characters of Jack & Rose are fictitious so there could've been 3 possible endings.
Um.  4.

The one they had.
One where rose dies and jack lives
One where the both live
And one where they both die

I'm still holding out for a directors cut where they both die..... By tidal wave when their dumb asses are standingat the bow and pretend to be flying.

Or Darth Vader comes in just before they make love  "Rose, Jack...I am your father"
Or like "The Final Countdown", a Kirk Douglas film, this time the ship goes forward in time & they are caught in the Gulf War..or Pearl Harbour.., or they get beamed abord the Starship Enterprise and....
Never mind...

I thought he meant the scene where after Rose dies, young Rose goes up the grand staircase and Jack is waiting for her.  I thought that was a sweet moment.

OR... the car that they make love in is the grandfather of Herbie the Love Bug (why do you think he was called Love Bug? ;-) ) and anyway, the car drives out of steerage and into the ocean, the the ship sinks.  And then the bad guy (Rose's boyfriend) and Rose's mom hop on the iceberg and it hits the Carpathia or whatever ship ignored the distress call...  :D

I think you misunderstood me. Sorry, I should've been more specific. I was referring to how Titanic had the main character reunite with her lover after death like how Somewhere in Time had the main character reunite with his lover after death. I believe I read somewhere some time ago that James Cameron was influenced by Somewhere in Time when he wrote that scene in Titanic.

Has anyone seen the movie Monster with Charlize Theron? What a tragic life that Aileen Wuornos had, although she is a murderer. But the final scene in that movie is pretty sad.

And it's cliche...but the ending of Titanic is another one of my favorites. And it works...this isn't the kind of movie I would watch expecting a happy ending out of (well, considering the facts...)
