Subject: Movies That Shouldn't Be Remade

Written By: Starde on 07/26/13 at 6:47 pm

Since I have such a passion for movies (so much that I majored in it!), generally hate remakes and was inspired by some of the other movie-themed threads around here, I figured I'd start this one. My first pick:

Gone with the Wind (1939)
http://www.movieposter.com/posters/archive/main/6/b70-3219

One of my favorite films of all time. Some people complain about how long it is, but I enjoyed every single second of it! I can't imagine anyone replacing Vivian Leigh and Clark Gable. They completely owned their roles. A part me believes such a remake won't happen, but if it does, may God have mercy on the poor soul because they'll have to answer to me. ;D

That one should definitely not be remade

On the subject of remakes, I keep hearing talk that there is a Fletch remake in the works.  This would be a mistake if it was true

Lost of Hitchcock films should never be remade, can't duplicate his genius.

I'd remake it with Paul Reubens as Rhett and Sarah Silverman as Scarlett.

Like, Hi, Fer Shurr,

I really wish that people would stop remaking "Carrie", because they never seem to remake that movie very well.

First of all, even though Angela Bettis was actually unattractive enough to be Carrie, her Carrie was portrayed as being too awkward to be believable.  Cloe Moretson (Sp?  Sorry) is WAY too pretty to be Carrie.  I love the idea of Julianne Moore as Mrs. White, but I really think that somebody who looked FAR more awkward, and perhaps more chubby, would've made a much, much better Carrie.

I also think that nobody should mess with the 2002 movie "May"!  That movie is priceless, and Angela Bettis is actually SUPER as May.  If Hollywood remade that movie, they'd probably get somebody like...<drumroll, please>...Lindsay Lohan, or Kristen Stewart... to portray May! NOOO!

Gone With The Wind is the biggest movie of all time, if you take inflation into account. It's hard to remake something so big and so classy.

We should have a list of movies they shouldn’t remake but did or are going to anyway…because, really, how many movies have you seen, good or bad, and said to yourself, “this needs to be re-made with more money and a dumbed down script with younger-looking, but overpaid and poorly-skilled actors”?, as a brain dead and idea-less Hollywood seems so determined to do?

I, personally, have almost never seen a remake and found that it was better than the original (that is if the original was any good to begin with).

I can count on one hand the number of movies remade that didn’t suck and have a real difficult time naming a single one that was actually better than the original & justified it being remade (other than a quick buck by the studio).

Think about it, the best movies you’ve seen were ORIGNIAL movies, even in the case that they were remakes, once you see the original, then the remake usually pales in comparison.

One of the reasons original films work better is that the story, writing acting the entire making of it was set in a fixed time. Gone with the Wind, c. 1939 (for example) because the actors, the film technology, the social environment of the movie going public, the economic environment of 1939, the writing, it  all came together at THAT time, 1939 and that can never be duplicated. The essence of what or when the film was made IS part of the film.

Remaking it in another time (and I’m not speaking about the era the move is set in) will never be the same as when they bottled that magic in the year 1939, no matter how much money, or young, beautiful actors/actresses  or money, or modern technology they throw at it at any other time will work. 1939, that time, that one spot in time, made it special and that time will never be here again.

This is something the big studios and Hollywood producers will never understand.

Good point. However, some movies that we may think should never be remade were already remakes, like the Wizard Of Oz that first came out in 1910 and then in 1925 before the one that we all know & love, in 1939 with Judy Garland. Or Ben Hur which original came out in 1925 as a silent film before the Charlton Heston one in 1959 that we all know. There are several more.

If you mean the one with Marilyn Monroe, that one was a remake.

If you are referring to the movie with Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton, you've got nothing to worry about lol

Please no, leave "The Shining" alone! It was made by an excellent director and is a classic film and has the right to stay that way.

btw, your image is not showing.

A sequel to "Gone With the Wind" has been published as a novel in 1991, "Scarlett" by Alexandra Ripley, but will that be made into a film?

Howard, The Shining has been remade.  It was a made for tv with more input from Stephen King.  Apparently he wasn't as happy with the original.

Also, they have made another tv move for the book Scarlet.  It got about as good of ratings as the book.  The book was awful, I didn't even attempt to watch the movie.

They could've remade "Duck Soup" in the early 2000's with Rufus T. Firefly as a George Bush-like character. Other than that, all of them. They're no Marx's left to star in them.
