Subject: Songs in 3/4

Written By: yearofthemonkey on 08/03/13 at 10:29 pm

A thread about pop and rock songs that are in 3/4 instead of 4/4, or contain large segments in waltz time.

Please tell me if this has been done before.

I'll start:

Boyz II Men: I'll Make Love to You

The Beatles: Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

Carlos & I LOVE to waltz. When we were dating, we went to wedding. We asked the DJ to play a waltz. We waited and waited and waited. We went back to him and asked about the waltz. He said, "I have been playing slow songs." AH, no! A waltz is NOT just any slow song. The only song that Carlos could think of at the time was this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxEPV4kolz0

So the DJ played it and of course we were the only two on the dance floor. But the problem with Piano Man is that it is a fast waltz and it is LONG! Since we were the only two on the dance floor and we KNEW everyone was watching us, we felt obligated to keep dancing-and we were DYING! But we survived it.

Now we know other songs that we can ask for that are not as fast and not as long like:

An interesting one was waaayyyy back in 1953 - Teresa Brewer's 'Till I Waltz Again With You', which despite its title, was written and sung in 4/4 time!

They've sharply declined since the 1950's, but they haven't vanished:

This is a great topic! I can think of several pop songs that have triple meter.

For example, here's two great ones from 1998:

"I'll Be" by Edwin McCain:
JrM8KkNHSps

"Iris" by Goo Goo Dolls:
birrtUbd-CY
(In this one, there is a part in the instrumental break that shifts to common meter, but that only lasts for about 35 seconds.)

I will come up with some more later.

This is the only "hard rock" song I know that's in 3/4 (well most of it is):

"La donna รจ mobile" (The woman is fickle) is the Duke of Mantua's canzone from the beginning of act 3 of Giuseppe Verdi's opera Rigoletto (1851).

Yes they are. I think the Beatles are among very few bands that used the 3/4 tempo.

Scanning my library, this is what I came up with (I may have missed a few), omitting the ones that have already been mentioned:

Aretha Franklin - "You Make Feel Like A Natural Woman" (1967)

Bessie Banks / The Moody Blues - "Go Now" (1964)

Chicago - "Colour My World" (1971)

The Eagles - "Take it to the Limit" (1975)

Burt Bacharach / Jackie DeShannon - "What The World Needs Now Is Love" (1965)

Journey - "Open Arms" (1981)

Judy Collins - "Send in the Clowns" (1975)

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - "Mr. Bojangles" (1970)

Rod Stewart - introduction to "Maggie May" (1971)

Simon & Garfunkel - "Scarborough Fair" (1966)

Tommy James & The Shondells - "Sweet Cherry Wine" (1969)

Tower of Power - "You're Still a Young Man" (1972)

I'm not including all my progressive rock songs with bizarre time signatures.  That could a topic in itself :)  Back in college (in the 1980s, before the intarwebs), we used to try and figure out stuff like this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKftiJS30Cs

See if you can get it without Googling:

The first verse: 9/4 9/4 11/4 11/4 4/4 4/4 4/4 5/4 4/4 7/8 4/4 5/4

Also in the category of non-standard time signatures:

Peter Gabriel - "Solsbury Hill" (1977)

Dave Brubeck Quartet - "Take Five" (1959)

The Joe Cocker version is 3/4, but I think the original is 4/4.

For a reverse situation, The Toys' "A Lover's Concerto" is 4/4, but the original Bach minuet is in 3/4.

Ah, here's another set with different time signatures:

Bob Dylan's "My Back Pages" is 3/4

but The Byrds cover version of "My Back Pages" is 4/4
