Subject: What age range is a young adult? Verses an older adult?

Written By: 80sfan on 08/10/13 at 11:59 am

People use the word 'young adult', but what age range do they mean when they say that? ???

Subject: Re: What age range is a young adult? Verses an older adult?

Depends, it`s all relative. I consider anyone under the age of 30 `young`  So I guess for me a young adult is anywhere from 19 to 30.

Aww heck even 35 is pretty young.  :)

I've heard some use 18 to 40 before. Maybe I remembered wrong.

From a biological stand it would be 18-24.

But culturally, it would go until about age 30 or 40.

It depends what context you use the term young adult in. Someone born in 1993 is only turning 20 this year. In the United States, you generally have to be 21 to buy beer so a bar man might still see a 20 year old as a kid.

Nah, you aren't wrong. It's all speculation. There is no right or wrong answer. It's all relative. I know some 70 and 80-year-olds who tell me "You're just a kid!".  That's pretty much what I call people 30 and under now too.

Sure maybe 18 to 40 is right, who knows. There is no right or wrong answer, just like those topics "What is the core year of a decade" or "defining year of a decade" of stuff like that. This is no right and perfect answer, even though people like to debate it for pages and pages.

I would have to say early to mid 30's and an older adult would be over the age of 40.

It's weird that I'm close to 30 as it is(will be 30 in 2015) but could get lumped in with straight out of high school 18 and 19 year olds.

I've always thought young adulthood meant roughly ages 20 through 40 but most seem to categorize it as 18-25 but some extend it to 30.

When I was a early teen of 13/14 I used to think of 19 year olds as so grown up but now it is harder for me think of them as any kind of adult at all, I think it really is relative and your perspective changes the older you get.

No way should someone born in 1985 be associated with someone born in 1994. 1994 borns still can't legally get an American beer.

Exactly. It does. You shall experience that.
That's why I lump 19 to 30 year olds as young adults. No offense intended.

That's why people who are in their 80s lump me and 40 year-olds, and even 60s year-olds in the same group. I am not offended by it, it's their perspective. As they are older than me, I respect that and don't question it. I might feel the same way if I reach 80. Who knows.

I don't disagree with ya dag I was just trying to make a point  ;)

Btw 18 yr olds are still inherently stupid.... the driving age should be raised to 18 and the voting and enlistment age should be raised to 21.

In Germany you are not 'young' by law anymore once you're over 27. So 'young adults' are those between 18-26 in this country.

I also have to buy a 'senior membership' if I want to stay in a German HI youth hostel  :o

Works for me. I just have to remember not to lump the 18 year-olds together with the ones in their mid 20s, coz if I do lots of kids in their mid 20s get butthurt.  (Even though when I was 25 or 26 I`d still get lumped in with the 18 and 19 year-olds by the seniors. That`s just the way it is I guess. That is the way they saw me. Maybe I am one of those seniors now...lol)

I'd say my definition of a young adult vs. an older adult would be that a younger adult would be someone I'd consider a "kid" whereas an older adult would be someone whom I could accept more as a peer.

I don't think there's an exact age, but generally when someone hits their late 20's then age begins to have much less meaning IMO. That was about the time when I start making friends with people in their 50's and beyond and they respected me as an equal.

Yep! It really depends on the person. I know a few people who think people in their 40s+ are old. Hell, I think I know a few who think you're old if you're in your 30s. However, I consider adults in those age ranges as still young.

I think I felt pretty much the same between the ages of 30 to 40. Big changes from 40 to 50. Esp health related and playing sports and remembering things.  At 50 your reflexes ( when driving) are not the same they were at age 30, but you can compensate a little using the wisdom you have acquired from years of driving experience.  At age 30 I'd play sports and it would take a day or so to recover. Now it takes about a week  ;D  (OK, maybe longer... ;D  )

In my 20s I thought I knew everything and could do everything. At age 50 I realized I was such a jerk by thinking I knew everything in my 20s coz in my 50s I realize I didn't know anything when I was in my 20s (and I'd say most people my age would say just the same thing), I just thought I did.
I know more now... more than I did when I was 20 or 25, but I still don't know much.

Does it matter? As some have said, age is relative. What matters is what you do. I believe that you are never too old - or too young to learn new things. The key is to keep growing. And you are NEVER too old for toys.

As for me-I am 143 years old but I lie about my age.  ;) :D ;D ;D

There is a "Young Adult" Program

and then there are really older adult programs, those are called nursing homes.
