That depends on personal choice...what you like and what you don't like.
Sometimes the first one sucks but they do a sequel anyways.

I always looked at James Bond as an anomaly. Wow, 50 years and the movies are still good!

As for Star Wars, most people love episode IV and V, they put it on a pedestal. But I hear a lot of complaints about the other films, but maybe it depends on the circle of people.

To answer your question, both kinds of sequels.

...and the cast/characters are different people. However, I think in the 4th one, some of the characters were the same, but different actors were playing them.

Yeah the fourth is usually even worse

Except for HP: Goblet of Fire & Live or Die Hard
And, if I remember correctly, the 4th Star Trek movie didn't suck

My theory is

the first one is just "okay" or "not bad" because they spend a lot of time working on the background (origin story).

The second one is the best because they accept the audience knows the story so they just give you the good stuff.

The third one usually sux because all the good material went into the second film. And usually the same people aren't attached to the third.... The studio just wants to crank out a money maker.

I know! The first star wars (episode IV) came out when I was 14..so it's hard to think of as "part 4"  ;D

I love all 3 of the Star Wars films from the late 70s and early 80s. Absolutely hate Phantom Menace, and I actually like Episodes 2 and 3.

As for the emperor, yeah, he was amazing! I saw no reason to dislike Return of the Jedi.

Agreed; it definitely loses the appeal at that point.

In my opinion, the first two of a series are awesome, like 90% of the time. A good example in my opinion is the first 2 Halloween movies (the 1978 and 1981 versions). Great and exciting! Although by today's standards Halloween II may seem slow paced. But to me the first two are awesome!
