I'll focus on Horror films, since that's my genre of choice!

50s: The Blob, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers
60s: Psycho
70s: Halloween, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, When A Stranger Calls
80s: Friday The 13th (Parts I & II especially), Aliens
90s: Scream
00s: Saw Series

Great choices, I agree. You could throw in A Nightmare on Elm Street and Poltergeist for the '80s as well.

I was gonna name Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street for the '80s in general but wasn't sure if horror had a wide enough audience for them to help define the decade. Freddy and Jason are both icons though that most people recognize.

50s: I Love Lucy, Leave It To Beaver, Route 66, The Honeymooners, What's My Line?, Your Hit Parade (first half), American Bandstand (second half)
60s: Andy Griffith, Dick Van Dyke, Mission Impossible, The Dating Game, Shindig/Hullabaloo, Ed Sullivan Show
70s: All In The Family, The Brady Bunch, Flip Wilson, Mary Tyler Moore, Three's Company, Soul Train, Midnight Special
80s: Square Pegs, Family Ties, Miami Vice, Starcade, All of MTV's programming
90s: Beverly Hills 90210, Seinfeld, Frasier, Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, Friends, Sex And The City ('90s-'00s transitional)
00s: Entourage, The Office, Gilmore Girls, CSI, NCIS, The O'Reilly Factor (started in 1996 but became far more popular during the '00s)
10s so far: Modern Family, Parenthood, The Big Bang Theory (possibly more '00s-'10s transitional), The Crazy Ones

Other popular 80s slasher-camp movies were... Sleepaway Camp, The Burning, Just Before Dawn and Cheerleader Camp.
