Subject: Teen and Young Adult Fashion Chart From Past to Present

Written By: ArcticFox on 03/04/15 at 3:10 pm

Here is a chart that stretches from 1997 through the first half of 2014 (when it was made in April of last year):

https://qzprod.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/screen-shot-2014-04-08-at-5-28-32-pm.png?w=640

1997 - early 1998: Business Casual

1998 - 1999: Twill/Chino (peak of youth fashion)

2000 - early 2001: Khaki Pants and Cargo Pants

late 2001 - early 2003: Bleak Colors (9/11 happened)

2003 - 2004: Pink and Surfer/Skater Fashion

2004 - early 2006: Bright Colors

2006: Blazers and Knits

2007 - early 2008: Boho-Chic

2008 - 2010: Skinny Jeans

2011: Dresses

2012 - 2013: Colored Denim, Bright Colors, and Floral Prints

2014: Leggings

From the chart, the heyday of young fashion was 1997 through the first half of 2001. This was the Twill/Chino period of fashion, when jeans were not the main course. Sometime afterwards came the Premium Denim time period which lasted from about 2002 through 2006. Then came fast fashion, which began around 2008 and continues to the present day.

The little gray lines are right underneath the zero line. They are the years. There are four vertical black bars in a year, representing each quarter. As you can see, it fluctuates drastically. The long dotted line is the long term average (2.25%).

So, do you remember these? What are your memories of this? Did you like any of these trends? Do you miss them? Although I don't remember it at all, I like the Business Casual one the most. The first two seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Sabrina the Teenage Witch were great examples of this trend. Therefore, the Business Casual trend started in 1996. Since fashion goes in 20 year cycles, I hope this comes back. I'll be waiting for it.

What's wrong with the coloured pants?  :P

I don't remember the mid-00s as "bright coloured" but ok;
I remember around 2004 the preppiness of fashion.
In the late 90s I hade those corduroy pants.

Over the years professional golfers were infamous with their coloured pants.

Ok that's a bit too much to my taste, almost like a clown!

They're dumb!

I never wore them myself, but alot of classmates did when they were cool. Thankfully, they're not in anymore. But I'm more a subdued, neutral colored kind of guy. I know what I look good in.

They are very common where I live;
also very common among preppy people of every age.

The end is unusual. Bright colors were nowhere to be seen in 2014, not even in last summer; I know for a fact that animal prints were not in style in 2012 & '13. Maybe 2014, but they are nowhere near common. Floral prints were fashionable in 2012, and remain so today, although the designs have changed since they first came in.
