Subject: What things in media scared you as a child?

Written By: mimitchi33 on 06/20/15 at 12:48 pm

Alright guys, so what things that you heard on the radio, or saw on TV or in a movie scared you when you were a kid?
Here's mine:

The pirate from SpongeBob grated me! This is a common fear of a lot of toddlers.
While we're on the same topic, the teaser trailer for the film of the series scared me so much that I had to leave the theater!
The 1-800 Bar None sock puppet. I always ran out of the room when it came on
The 1984 PBS "And On" logo. I got nightmares after watching it on YouTube...
The U.S. Acres episode "Wanted: Wade". My brother was watching it and the jail sequence scared the snot out of me! I remember hiding behind the couch until it was over! This gave me a fear of roosters.
The DVD menus to the Disney movie "Home On The Range". IDK why though...
There's this one scene from Britt Allcroft's Magic Adventures of Mumfie I remember scaring me as a child and giving me a fear of elephants that I'd love to rewatch in English that was cut from Mumfie's Quest, involving Bristle locking the main character in the holding cell. I got shivers when I re-watched it a few months ago. Here's the link to the Japanese version of the clip: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2rg58k

Abominable snowmen in general.  Both the yeti from the Matterhorn at Disneyland, as well as Bumble from the Rankin/Bass Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer holiday special terrified me when I was little.

I don't remember if I ever told this story but when  we lived in Washington DC I was in the 4th grade. It was spring in 1978.

I remember it was a Friday night and my parents went out to dinner and I was left home alone to fend for myself. I was waiting for the Incredible Hulk to come on at 8pm.  Before that I saw an ep of Green Acres. It was an ep about about a spirit not unlike Bloody Mary (the ep is called the Ballad of Molly Turgis- I've never seen the ep again so we are relying on the memory of an imaginitive 10 yr old) that haunted the town.

Anyway despite being a comedy that episode scared the crap out of me. I was so scared I couldn't let my feet touch the ground. I was afraid something would come out from under the couch and grab me.  I needed to change the channel and we did not have a remote control TV.

I stood on the couch took a step onto the coffee table and jumped to a chair that was closer to the TV. Then I let myself (briefly) touch the floor to change the channel and then lept as far as I could so I could scramble onto the coffee table then jump onto the couch.

Some shyt got broken. My mother was not amused and did not want to hear how I thought Molly Turgis was in the house and ready to kill us all.  :D

When I was little I used to be uncomfortable with buzzers on certain TV game shows. They don't bother me at all now.

There were also certain TV commercials from back then that scared me/made me feel uncomfy in one way or another. Even at my advanced age, there are ads that still sorta frighten me, and sometimes haunt me for weeks. (That is, their imagery kinda sticks in my mind.) This is why I don't like to watch ads anymore; most of them I find annoying.

I agree with some buzzers from different game shows, the one from Family Feud was pretty scary.

I was a little kid during the last few years of the original version of the show; that is, when Richard Dawson was the emcee. I might have vague recollections of running away from the TV when I heard that buzzer once.

I remember liking the PBS logo, but it did scare me a little when the volume was turned up.

Not necessarily scared, but would get the willies hearing this one around 2:00 with the "funky chimes" (sounded like doom was on the horizon).

Speaking of media, I'd definitely close my mouth and turn my head away when this came on at the end of certain talk shows:

wWzN-4BwyW8

It still haunts me to this day because another thing that scared me was the way the Multimedias would quickly form an collapse and seemingly perfectly with the high-pitched syntheiszers. And it was sometimes a sloppy, sudden transition from the show to the logo, often with people talking as the logo began its animation. That circle with triangular wedges reminded me of a Tylenol pill and its zooming out motion reminded me of going down the stomach someone I knew or myself that might kill me.

Honestly, I was too filled with my own health (mental) problems to care about the outer world. So I had this imaginary/delusional veil around me, kind of like when you're 4 years old and you approach a strange dude, with dark clothing and a devious smirk on his face, you feel like you're invincible and that everyone in the world is nice. It's actually kind of frightening how sheltered I was, and probably still are.  :)

This is the Halloween 5 Michael Myers. It scared the hell out of me when I was 9 and 10. I went on a paper route at that age and I would be spooked out for years, but especially during my paper route years. I was afraid Michael Myers would catch me behind a bush when I delivered the paper.

We saw this movie at a drive-in (remember those?). We had a station wagon (remember those?) For those of you who don't know the set up of a station wagon, you had the front seat (that had a bench where at least 3 people could sit-maybe more depending on the size of the people), the back seat, and then we had what we called the "way back" (I have heard it called the "back back") which usually had a seat facing backward or it was basically a platform. Ours was a platform. Being the youngest (and smallest) my "seat" was in the "way back" along with one of my sisters. Of course, today this would be totally illegal because there were no seat belts back there. Of course there were no seat belts in the front & back seats either.

Anyway, while I am in the "way back" watching the movie and the witch-in either form, came on the BIG screen, I ducked behind the back seat. I can't tell you how old I was-maybe 3? 4? 5? I don't think I was older than that.

We still have a drive in  in town. I pass it on my way to work when I'm on nights and i always wonder how many people are there.

When I was 4 or 5 years old my parents decided to go to the movies and see Lady Sings the Blues

They couldn't find a babysitter so they took me too and shoved me been the sheets for one particular scene that took place out side billie's bus.  Apparently I peeked.  For years I was tormented with images like this in my nightmares

http://i.ytimg.com/vi/1WaaMp8AWQM/maxresdefault.jpg

And also this

http://images4.fanpop.com/image/photos/15300000/lady-sings-the-blues-diana-ross-michael-jackson-15357016-440-308.jpg

I figured out who the klan was several
Years later but couldn't figure out why I had nightmares about them.  It wasn't until I was 14 and saw lady sings the blues on HBO that I figured out the source of one of my many nightmares as a kid.

I guess I didn't do well with horror movies as a child.  I was frightened by Jason (not whistledog. lol), Michael Myers, and on occasion, Freddie (although he was just creepy and didn't scare me as much (although had I actually run into him, I'm sure I'd be singing a different tune.))  I liked horror comics though, so maybe it was mostly the music in the movies.  :-\\

One that was scary to me but wasn't necessarily a horror movie per se, was "Something wicked this way comes" as a kid was fairly frightening to me.

Honestly I think the credit goes to John Carpenter. As the director he decided what the shot would look like. He said sit up faster! No sit up slower. Okay now look in Jaimie's direction. Turn your head slower. Now stare.  ;D

When I played that first version of res evil it totally freaked me out.  I remember I was sitting in apt with all the lights off and I heard the sound of chewing and then that first zombie turned and looked at "me" I jumped up and turned the lights on.  Also all those zombie sounds and you couldn't tell where they were coming from. I was afraid to open a door bc I was scared of what might be behind it!!!

Media can be written word too, no?

These books simultaneously horrified and had me enthralled as a kid.

The Headless Roomate and other tales of terror.  http://www.amazon.com/Headless-Roommate-Other-Tales-Terror/dp/0871313278 which are, more-or-less urban legends/scary stories to tell in the dark type stories.

One of many written (or I guess, collected by) Helen Hoke.  She did several: Horrors, Horrors, Horrors and Creepies, Creepies, Creepies (you get the picture) which also were young adult age horror collection. http://www.amazon.com/Horrors-Helen-Hoke/dp/0531022110

Alright, back around 1989, those commercials for the bones that made dogs' teeth clean scared me stupid. I hated the smiling dogs.
--Max Headroom
--Chucky. Because, come on. After I saw the movie, I put all my dolls except Nooney in my closet with a chair on the door for a week.
--The dogs in the "Leave me Alone" music video. (I didn't know who MJ was at the time, though)
--I was scared of the Penguin from the old Batman series.

That's all I can think of, but I'm sure I'll come up with more.

I was like that as an adult, I was babysitting in a new place and I started reading something that scared me, I kept hearing things outside, so I would turn on the *really* bright porch light to look out the window.  Apparently I woke the parents' neighbor/brother as he called, but didn't say anything on the phone.  Geez, I was having a urban legend moment..  Don't answer the phone

http://www.karenrauchcarter.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Toilet-flushed-away.jpg

I know this technically doesn't count, but throughout my early childhood since I was 3 and even as far as up until I was 10 years old. I would regularly have about 3-4 nightmares a week based off my bunk bed that looked just like this except it was black, or TOILETS in general. Two of the parts of my bunk bed, at the far left and right looked like a robot with one eye each that would try to catch me and beat me up as a little child. However, it would give me a warning sign to get away from it before it would catch me. So I had to escape out of bed before it would try to find me. However, you had different types with different powers that would tickle me so bad or hurt me really bad. In my dream it felt so painful though no joke.

My fear of toilets as a young child was NOT funny. I used to be scared that the toilets would grab me with its invisible hands and flush me away. Whenever I used the bathroom at home, right after I flushed the toilet I would close my ears and sprint away from it. Public bathrooms were the WORST though. Me being closed in that stall made me feel like I was trapped. Throughout my early childhood and most of my elementary school years, I would hold it every time until I got home. No matter how bad it was. I definitely refused to use it in stores as well. In some of my dreams it would take place at my house or my grandparents houses and ANY toilet on any given dream would try to attack me if I looked at it. I had to turn my head away from the toilet in order to avoid it. If I put my eye on it, the toilet would come to life and I had to out run it or it was over for me. However, when it came to public places, that was the worst, but then if I go inside the public bathroom, the door would be locked I couldn't get out. The public bathroom would be like a huge labyrinth or a maze filled with tons of toilets in a bunch of stalls, it would be an ARMY of toilets coming to life to catch me and flush me down. These nightmares were stuck with me for a long time.

Yes it sounds weird, awkward as hell, and doesn't make any sense, but true story, a lot of people tend to think that Clowns are the most scary things ever or the Chuckie-Cheese mascot LOL. Certain puppets from movies might be creepy as well. But no, those were a complete joke compared to the nightmares of toilets and parts of the bunk bed furniture I would have regularly.

I kinda got freaked by the pirate, but I became used to it after a while.

And as for everyone else here?
I like Kiss's music!
I was never scared of toilets as a kid.

Okay, so what scared me? The logo after George Lopez with the fetus, the horsefly close up from the SpongeBob episode Wormy, and King Ramses from Courage the Cowardly Dog.

The Mohawk Productions logo? I never cared about it entirely, but it was kinda amusing seeing it (I have a strange fascination with logos, btw).

the horsefly close up from the SpongeBob episode Wormy,

I really feel you on this one. Ever since I first saw that close up, it scared the crap out of me like nothing else would. Even 12 years later, I'm still afraid of that monstrosity. I can still remember the creepy buzzing sound it makes, while it made me hide behind the couch pillows.
