Subject: Is Obama Gen X or a Baby Boomer?

Written By: Zelek2 on 04/26/16 at 8:03 pm

Being born in 1961, do you think of our president as more of a Gen Xer or more of a Boomer? He could be considered either one based on various definitions, but I'd like to see your take.

I swear we had this thread before!

Anyway, he's not much younger than my dad born 1958. My dad blew his brains out in the disco during his university years, as did Obama. I consider them both Boomers.

We did, but someone deleted it I think? Can you see if you can find it?

Also, "blew his brains out" makes it sound like your dad shot himself. :P

What an awful influence on the children!!! >:(

That's what I thought too. I was just about to say "RIP Trollpoke's dad" but then I realized his dad was the same guy who forced him to delete Candy Shop from his Super Slim Mini 2005 mp3 player.

Looking at those school photos of his, they do seem very "Boomerish".

I'd say he's apart of Generation Jones.

Generation Jones is an interesting concept, but barely anyone acknowledges it in real life. :P

The transition between Baby Boomers and Generation X is strictly the mid-60s. Obama is just one year younger than my dad, who is a late Boomer from head to toe.

Is the 1946 to 1964 years, for Baby Boomers, reliable?

I'd say so. 1964 is the only iffy one, they probably didn't go to the disco. The rest are pure Boomer or close to it. Seems to be one of the better defined generations, because it's usually defined by cultural events rather than technology.

Agreed.  The first time I heard of it, I was, like, "Huh???".  That's not to say there aren't a lot of people born in the 1960s (like me) who don't clearly identify with either generation.  But when I read some of the supposed indicators or characteristics of Generation Jones, I was screaming, "I'm totally NOT that!"  I'm much more inclined to think of myself as a hybrid Boomer/Xer than as something distinct from both.

Yeah, like 98% of articles say it's 1946 to 1964. It definitely is one of the more defined generations.

It's a term used for people born from the late 50s through the early 60s. Generation Jones is a term used for them, as some people see them as a bridge between the Baby Boomers and Generation X. Though, I guess the term is not as common as I thought, and I guess most people just group them with the Boomers. Then again, generational lines can sometimes be arbitrary (to a certain extent).

A lot of folks here seemed very much attached to the "Gen X = 1965-1980" idea.

That's fine and all, but it should be noted that Douglas Coupland (b. 1961) was the guy who coined the term "Gen X", and considers himself to be of it! :P Also, Jeff Probst (b. 1961), the host of the new Survior season "Millennials vs. Gen X", has also referred to himself as Gen X. And his in his own writings, Obama has called himself a "post-Boomer".

Perhaps they should poll all the 61-64ers in the world and ask them who they identify as! ;D

1961-1964 babies identify themselves as either Baby Boomers or Gen Xers, since they are somehow alike to late Baby Boomers.

Since there's no official years for any generation, I can just make them up in my mind. For me, generation X is 1965 to 1980!  :)

He's more Boomer.

According to Strauss and Howe, Boomers are actually born from 1943 to 1960.
