Subject: 2020!!

Written By: mxcrashxm on 07/21/16 at 11:45 am

So, since we're getting closer to it faster than before, what do you guys think about this particular year? I have this feeling it's going to be more futuristic than ever before and even more so than the new Millennium.

I'm pretty sure I'll see some changes. Even though I'll be more focused on 2000s nostalgia.

But there still won't be any flying cars, unless they're secretly being made now 😛

You sure will and isn't 00s nostalgia almost in full force? I've seen it being subtle with some things being current.

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Probably not! Maybe they're going to surprise us.

I still see a lot of nostalgia for the early 2000s. I do see more mid 2000s nostalgia compared to last year, but it's not enough to me.

Well, there isn't a lot of mid 2000s nostalgia. Just a bit. It's not that big compared to early 2000s nostalgia.

Well, it's going to be huge soon. I can possibly see it occurring more by 2020. Early 00s nostalgia though, I know is here to stay for right now.

I've been excited about 2020 for a while now. Been very eager to see the newest innovations in tech and pop culture. It's funny how I see 2020 as this futuristic decade, but by the time we reach 2050 the 2020s will look insanely dated. I wanna hear the music, see the fashion, use the latest tech etc etc

I hope this whole 'dumbed down' culture of the 00's and 10's will go away. People like Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, and Kanye West, are popular in the 00's and 10's.

And yes, I'm excited to see what the technology of the 20's will be like, and look like.

Now that you mention celebrities I'm a bit curious on seeing who'll be the next big icons of the 2020s. New people who come up and do some unique/original and set new standards or something.

It's creepy that we're only 3 1/2 years away from 2020, AND the fact that it's 30 years, THIRTY years from 1990. People you remember who were young in the 90's will now be considered as old (just kidding...). Anyways, I don't think 2020 will be futuristic, but I can definitely see the 2020's being the most transitional decade since the 90's. The early 2020's should be an extension of this upcoming late 2010's without a doubt. When it comes to technology, the advancements should become noticeable by the mid or late 2020's.

Yeah, we're going to be hoverboards, VRs, teleports, etc.

Well there's a few in mind. Some of the celebrities from today will be popular in the next decade especially those who are currently in the teen sitcom shows.

I know right? Damn, even 2000 will be 20 years old by then and I remember that year like crazy. It's also amazing how some of us will be preparing for our high school reunions and will be closer to 30 as well ;D :o. This decade just went very quickly in 6 years :o

The fact that it's gonna be thirty years since 1990 passed in 2020 is really weird. I could remember in the 2000s, I could tell the 70s were really old, even for 30 years. But seeing the early 90s as almost 30 years, it's really just seems like time's going fast.

I don't think flying cars will ever take off, at least in the next 100 years, because governments won't probably allow flying cars to become mainstream. We mostly likely going to get self driving cars powered by alternative fuel instead.

Self driving cars will be really common by then, maybe 20% of cars on the road. Home automation will be more common too.

I agree, I can easily see electric cars or solar powered cars taking over long before flying cars become the mainstream. Automatic driving cars (which I don't feel 100% comfortable with personally) are already on it's way.

My youngest sibling gonna be about 4 once we reach 2020 while one of the oldest of the younger siblings will be 12 by 2020 (born 2008). Time flies on by.

That's the weirdest thing to me. As strange as it is to think about 2000 being 20 years ago, I honestly can't even fathom any year in the 1990's being 30 years old.

As a kid, I remember watching shows that were 30 years old back then (like Bewitched, The Munsters, The Andy Griffith Show, etc.) and thinking about how long ago the '60s seemed. Imagining kids in the next decade watching stuff like Seinfeld, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air or Family Matters and feeling the same way about the '90s is just bizarre! :o

Twenty Twenties is how I pronounce it. All '00s decades use a different name. 1900 was pronounced as "Nineteen Hundred" while 1910s was called the "Nineteen Tens". In the '00s for the 21st century the 2000s is called the "Two Thousands", but I remember someone calling it the "Twenty Hundreds" a few times before. As for the 2010s I mainly here "Twenty Tens", but I'd also hear "Two Thousand Tens".

I mean as of 2016 it's easy to spot the differences from 2010 and 2011 when comparing them to 2016. By 2020 those years will look pretty dated.

1. Wow, the hologram technologies of the near future will make things made in the 2010's look vintage.
2. Elections happen every 4 years and it's been like that for a long time. I do like how time flies all the time.

The innovations tech wise in the 2020s will instantly make the 2010s look old. Holograms being more advance, Virtual Reality being used more, Cybernetic limps may become common (we already have them as of 2016), self driving cars, Machines can now make 3D printed food etc etc

Yeah, I know the election happens every 4 years. I'm just surprised as you are on how fast time flies. It felt like we've been in the 2010s for a long time, but when I look at my time in this decade I'm surprised by how much as changed since 2010. 2017 is right around the corner.

I don't think flying cars will ever take off, at least in the next 100 years, because governments won't probably allow flying cars to become mainstream. We mostly likely going to get self driving cars powered by alternative fuel instead.

Plus, 5G phones, 9th gen consoles, 4K TVs, etc.

I'm loving the future already.

How many times do I have to get people to understand this.  ;D In society, only from 2000-2009 people pronounced the year as "two thousand and ......", however, since 2010 and probably on to the rest of this century, it will always be pronounced as "twenty ....." So yes, it's "twenty twenty". We're in "twenty sixteen" right now. "twenty ten" was six years ago. "two thousand and nine" was seven years ago. "twenty thirteen" was three years ago. "twenty twenty two" is six years from now. "two thousand and two" was fourteen years ago.

Due to wanting to be consistent I don't even say "Two thousand and two" anymore. I just say "Twenty oh two" (20-02). Like how people in the 20th century called it "Nineteen oh two" (19-02). Don't like having to change the pronounciation whenever I'm talking about a certain year number. So I just say "Twenty..." for all years 20-01 onward.

There are only a few people who says the 2000s as "twenty-oh-*". I only remember hearing one person calling 2005 as "twenty-oh-five" and that's about it.

I just find saying "two thousand and nine" for 2009 and then "Twenty ten" for 2010 to be just plain weird. Guess I'm that odd man out. Oh well. "Twenty oh.." is my forever used pronunciation format until we reach 2099.

Hopefully it won't suck. When it comes to technology, I'd like to see some true advancements and not the same old repetitive, trend technology of the 2010s. Some of the stuff I'd like to see would be hoverboards, VR (perfected, that is), more cars powered by alternative methods (such as electric and solar powered cars), teleportation (possibly), etc. When it comes to entertainment, people really need to step it up in the 2020s. The current state of the entertainment industry is just unacceptable. Movies, T.V. shows, music, video games, etc., all need to start appealing to people with a wide variety of tastes. Everything feels too homogenized right now. For example, in the 2010s, if you're not into serialized dramas, you will probably not like many of today's T.V. shows. If you're not a fan of generic shooting games, you will not like today's video games. And of course there's music. If you're a rock fan (or even a fan of true electronica) in the 2010s, then this decade's music is truly painful. We need to go back to the days where there was something for everyone to enjoy, so that everyone's tastes are represented. It's all about creating a balance.

The '80s have been revived too many times and that's what nearly happened with the '90s. I mean it's ok to play music and bring back some fads from the past, but to try and make it a previous decade all over again is ridiculous. Anyway, I wish to do it all in 2020. Feel the same way. The 2010s is annoying as everyone has this dumb obsession with bringing back the 1980s and 1990s. If there is one thing I'm happy about with the new generation is that due to them being so young the idea of reviving the 1980s and 1990s will die out. I agree, we need new culture, not rehash old ones. I just hope that the people in Hollywood, behind the scenes, are unconsciously, or consciously, saving their best cards, and creative genius, for the 2020's. It's like the people in the music industry, and movie industry, planned for the 00's and 10's to be culturally horrible, or something.

Guess people in hollywood are obsessed with the past. Add that to the fact that there are too many people in this world who're also stuck in their old past nostalgia. Add to the two together and you got yourself a decade's worth of nostalgia pandering products that're made to appeal to the kids of 20th century. Was cool at first, but it's gotten out of hand.

Like mentioned there are already early 2000s nostalgia coming back. With fashion and even in movies such as Finding Dory which is a sequel to the 2003 Finding Nemo. Also getting an Incredibles 2 from Pixar as well. I'm fine with 2000s nostalgia as long as it isn't taken too far like how it was during the 1990s-2010s. But I guess revivals will keep on happening no matter what. Oh well.  :-\\

Absolutely. With the exception of GTA V, I think that video games have become way too simplified (e.g. Saints Row 3 from its previous games; DOOM, which lacks the horror element).

The "hoverboards" we have are a poor excuse. Can't ride them anywhere. I would like to see us phasing out fossil fuels and recycling more. Teleportation to me is a little far-fetched.

TV feels a little boring to me now (e.g. Doctor Who since Matt Smith, as there were much fewer companions and it overall felt less compelling probably as a result of fewer companions and the lack of other characters in its settings, and with more frequent transitions between the doctors), although I have the Web to be thankful for.

There hasn't been a lot of rock music that has tickled my tastes as well. The entire culture of this decade lacks that edginess/badass feel that the 2000s had. I feel like I'm living in the dream world of some Republican from the 1960s, but minus the racism and the homophobia, or that of a hippy minus the long hair and plus the tobacco.

I also really hate 2010s fashion. Too many thin clothes, and, come on, are we living in the 50s? Why don't we make long hair on guys more popular, and not that stupid quiff haircut?

Basically, gimme back 2000s culture, music and fashion, but with less hate towards each other. Gimme car-free cities and more dependence on alternative fuels. Also, gimme flying cars and actual hoverboards, but those are less of a priority.

Especially when video games nowadays are just really boring and repetitive. The only interesting console games that you could go play is GTA V, Mafia II & III, and Mortal Kombat X. It's one of the reasons why PC gaming would slowly take over the video game industry, while console gaming would become a minority in the near future.

The "hoverboards" we have are a poor excuse. Can't ride them anywhere. I would like to see us phasing out fossil fuels and recycling more. Teleportation to me is a little far-fetched.

The hoverboards were just awful. I don't know why would people believe that stuff from Back to the Future II would actually become real? They didn't even have DVDs in 1989 (the year Back In The Future II was released), so it just seems technologically impossible to have hoverboards, automatic shoes, and other bullcrap to exist in 2015.

AMD may seem the lesser of two evils; they make CPUs for consoles, but the most mobile they've been is laptop CPUs, and most people who want AMD CPUs are poor gamers and those who work with encryption. Meanwhile, Intel has CPUs in a handful of Android phones and tablets.

If that's the case, then gaming would certainly be doomed. I should really feel sorry for today's kids, since they don't have a lot of time to have a prosperous future of playing their favorite games. Whether it's on any console or a PC.

1. I don't think mobile gaming will completely replace traditional console gaming in the near future. I was hoping one day that video game developers stop doing DLCs and season passes and make 100% complete games again.
2. I hope anime comes back in the 2020's. That would be awesome!

Why should we go back to the past with car-free cities, when we been driving cars for over 100 years? Unlikely to happen.

1. I don't think mobile gaming will completely replace traditional console gaming in the near future. I was hoping one day that video game developers stop doing DLCs and season passes and make 100% complete games again.
2. I hope anime comes back in the 2020's. That would be awesome!

I'm waiting for NVIDIA to include Saints Row 2 to GameStream (if ever). I think gaming will go that way instead even though there's no competition to this model. I see DLCs as another way of publishers and developers asserting their rights to that game, and streaming kind of does also, esp. for music and films. Note that only rich people like us will only benefit from it in addition to the DLCs business. Overall, I want to see copyright reform soon, and full games for cheap or free.
The cartoons I watched weren't exactly anime, but had that aesthetic and a lot of rock/electronic music, e.g. W.I.T.C.H., Ben 10, Teen Titans.
Why should we go back to the past with car-free cities, when we been driving cars for over 100 years? Unlikely to happen.

To save the planet, but then again, North Korea is strictly car-free for most of its citizens. There's freedom in car ownership, but a high cost.

Pretty much anybody would do that soon in the future.

Notice the music of that decade? It was both somewhat mainstream and in the theme tunes of the cartoons or in its soundtracks at least.

Well, I think there was some Japanese-influenced shows like Kappa Mikey or Speed Racer: The Next Generation that were like anime shows. So, you had a point there.

Subject: Re: 2020!!

Yeah, that would make the 2020s a much better decade. As for the teleportation thing, it may be a bit far-fetched for the 2020s, but perhaps it'll catch on sometime in the 2030s or 2040s.

Cars and teleportation can't be compared. Cars are tangible machines that provide transportation. They only involve the person getting inside and operating it. Teleportation literally involves ripping the atoms from something and shooting it to another location while then proceeding to put the atoms back together (and who knows if the person/thing would be put back together correctly). Getting something like this right won't be as easy as building a car (which can already be challenging). And even if some form of teleportation exists within the 21st I doubt it'd even be safe to use. But we shall see.

1. Trap rap will be gone by this point and hip hop will just fall into dormancy, only still popular by die-hard fans. Non-rap influenced R&B will become popular again.
2. Electropop will fall into dormancy and most kinds of popular music will not be electronic influenced throughout the 2020's.
3. Most forms of rock music will become popular again throughout the 2020's.
4. Emoji/Selfie culture will be gone by the year 2020.
5. The last games in the Battlefield and Call of Duty series is released, signaling the end of FPS dominance in the 7th and 8th gens.
6. Tattoos will fade into obscurity and tattoo removal becomes popular among the mainstream population.
7. We could see a new technological invention sometime in the 2020's. Maybe a few.

Half of this isn't going away anytime soon!  ;)

Yeah, a lot of the things that were a part of 2010s culture will fade by the end of the 2010s or early 2020s. A bunch of new tech, fashion, memes etc will take their place.

That would be nice, but I have a feeling that 2020-21 will still be thought of as "years of the 2010s" by society in the future.

I guess it's just that emojis are more corporate than emoticons ever were. The fact that there are advertisements for emojis on YouTube and even a friggin' motion picture based on them just causes them to come off as more pretentious to a lot of people. I personally like that there's such a broad range of emojis to choose from, including lesbian-related ones (<3), but the fact that executives are milking them in the same way they've milked the Despicable Me Minions this decade shows just how shallow capitalism can be these days.

I'm tempted to say "Not like Saints Row 2? Not important", but I just remembered I had some excitement for DOOM (partly due to its soundtrack) which is a first person shooter that lacks features and customisation compared to Saints Row 2, and VR is in its early stages.

One thing I would like to see is improved character movement; of course, you can walk around on a bit of space, but since it's quite limited due to (currently) the cables you're tied down to, the way they have movement in Hot Dogs, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades is quite artificial where you teleport to a short distance by pointing to a place you want to go to.

Yeaaahhhhh, VR certainly needs its improvements. But then again we can easily classify the present day as the early era of mainstream of VR technology. Within the mid 21st century when we're all in our 50-70s I'm sure VR won't be as limited.
