Subject: What's next after digital age?

Written By: muppethammer26 on 08/28/16 at 11:09 am

The transition from the analog age into the digital age was one of the biggest ever.  Digital bought many great changes that we have today.

Similar to how digital replaced analog, what could replace digital in the future?

The hologram age, I suppose.

Quantum age! Back to my sci-fi books.

Really though, I think automation is the next phase in technology. It's super easy to do, so it's only a matter of time really.

I'd pray for the virtual age, but that probably won't be for another several decades. I agree with NewYorkEagle, that holograms will become the next huge technology, probably emerging dominant in about two decades from now.

According to Wikipedia, the digital revolution, began between the late 1950's and late 1970's.

To me, the digital age had its roots between that time. Although, the technology that we see today was mainstream since the 80s, as I believe to myself. This may include personal computers and cartridge-based video game consoles.

It would be interesting to see what the future will bring us once the digital era ends.

The quantum age. The LHC is under construction and will be in operation, I've heard from a science class that people are trying to produce nuclear fusion as an energy resource and quantum computers may replace classical computers for specialised tasks due to the difficulties in improving computing performance with current methods.

I'd say the Holographic Age. Soon the idea of using a physical monitor on a computer/TV/mobile device would become obsolete as people would move over to holographic screens. The thing I'm wondering is when the Digital Age will come to an end. I'm sure it will happen, but I'm not sure if it'll be in this century or the upcoming ones.

It will be all back to writing on paper and committing to memory of the human brain like in the olden days, before all this technology started.

Who wants to know?  :o

I won’t be alive for when the digital age transforms into the hologram age in the last period of this century and I wouldn’t want to be alive for it.  :o

Too much is happening to the world around us and not for the best of humanity.  :o

I don't believe that. What was so digital in the 1950s or 60s and 70s?

Sometime in the late 1890s to late 1991: The Analog Age

Late 1991 to NOW: The Digital Age

In between you had The Electronic Age (c. 1970-mid 1991). Some pundits described it as "digital", but in reality, it was really a mixture of using both analog and digital technology. Think floppy discs, cassette tapes, VCRs, the first few generations of video games, early PCs, calculators, single-screen handheld games, telephone answering machines, dot matrix printers, Xerox machines, push button phones, and early cable TV.

Analog Age are things like classic automobiles, radio, shellac and vinyl records, rotary telephones, typewriters, non-cable ready TVs, film, sewing machines, player pianos, washing machines, refrigerators, and pretty much anything that relies on electricity. A lot of these were still popular in the Electronic Age, but their heyday was clearly behind themselves at that point.

A mini-transition between the two is the Atomic Age (1945-late 1960s), where you had things like lasers and of course nuclear energy, but in essence is just an extension of the Analog Age.

Still, it's pretty far-fetched at this point to what a post-digital age would provide, but I'd just hope that the Holographic Age would provide stuff like curable diseases for all, and man would be recyclable with the perfection of transplants, with the final triumph being the brain transplant, where as one body dies, it gets replicated into an entire new body. Of course, this would still be dependent upon numerous outside factors, including crime and sudden collapses. Of course it's probably a lifetime or two away, but just a fantasy idea of mine.

And doing massive harm to Mother Nature in the process. Perhaps, that’s how The Highest Power meant for it to be. Who knows?

I would say the Algorithmic Age is the era after the Digital Age, and we are already in it as it began around 2013. Over the past six years or so machine learning has become very influential on people's lives and most do not even realize it.

When people say "Facebook knows everything about you" they aren't saying that Mark Zuckerberg and his employees know everything about you, they are saying that Facebook's machine learning algorithms know everything about you.
