Subject: What time period was singer Gloria Estefan really popular ?

Written By: tv on 11/24/16 at 9:00 pm

I have been thinking about this for awhile when was Gloria Estefan really popular? Was it 1985-1991, 1985-1994 or 1985-1996?

She had 10 Top 10 hits from 1985-1991. It seems like after "Coming Out Of The Dark" hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1991 she fell off the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 permanently and was more of an A/C artist chart wise. However her her last 2 hits before "Coming Out Of the Dark" were Oyo Canto(Hear My Voice) and "Cuts Both Ways(Great Song BTW) hit #48 and #44 respectively on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1990. The closest she got to the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 was 1994's Turn The Beat Around(a cover of a 1970's hit by the late Disco songstress Vickie Sue Robinson) which hit #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1994.

She was more of a more of an A/C artist post 1990 or 1991:

1991:

Can't Forget You #44 US, #2 A/C
Live For Loving You #22 US, #2 A/C

1992:

Always Tomorrow #81 US #5 A/C
I See Your Smile # 48 US, #3 A/C

1994:

Turn The Beat Around #13 US, #4 A/C(Vickie Sue Robinson cover of 70's disco song)
Everlasting Love #27 US, #5 A/C(Carl Carlton cover of a 70's song)

1996:

Reach #42 US, #5 A/C
I'm Not Giving Up #40 US #9 A/C

1998:

Heavens What I Feel #26 US, #10 A/C

1999:

Music of My Heart(w/N'Sync) #2 US, #2 A/C

For me, personally, around 80s to mid-90's was her peak. Her 'hey day' if you will.

In the United States? 1986 to 1999, beginning with "Conga" as part of Miami Sound Machine and ending with "Music of My Heart" with *NSYNC. In other territories, however, her span of fame was 1984 to 1998, with "Dr. Beat" being her breakthrough hit instead of "Conga" and "Music of My Heart" not accomplishing much outside of the United States; her last notable international hit was "Heaven's What I Feel."

Simply putting it, she was popular when her singles and albums were in the UK charts, so it would be the same times as stated above.

Yeah, I remember she recorded an album of cover songs in 1994. This included a cover of Carole King's "It's Too Late"; I enjoyed that one. :)

So overall, mid-80s to late '90s, with IMO a peak from 1989 to 1992, where she was the halftime show performer at Super Bowl XXVI. IMO once Jennifer Lopez broke through in 1999 with her smash album and single "If You Had My Love", the mantle of "Queen of Latina Pop" had been passed on. "Conga" is now a staple on many Classic Hits stations these days, with "Anything For You" and "Get On Your Feet" often making an appearance. She was recently in the news with regards to her response to Fidel Castro's death, and still can draw some crowds when she tours on the Legacy Circuitâ„¢.

According to Wiki, the last album that she recorded was entitled The Standards; it was released in 2013. All the tracks from it are covers of classic standards, and were produced by her husband Emilio.

The original "Miami Sound Machine" is make a temporary New Years Eve Appearance? I think before 1989 Gloria Estefan was credited on her songs as "Gloria Estefan/Miami Sound Machine" than 1989 and after it was  just "Gloria Estefan".

85 - 94. I do. I don't recall her being popular in the later half of the decade.
