Subject: What is your favorite automotive decade?

Written By: Mr Steamer on 02/26/17 at 2:49 pm

From any decade from the turn of the 20th century to now. What is your favorite decade for cars? For me, it's the 70's, I am a sucker for classic American muscle. These are among my favorites;

I just love cars from the late 70s to the early 80s. I love the Volkswagen Beetle from the late 1970s! :)

For now, the 1960's.

Speaking of automobiles, I absolutely dislike 80's cars for some reason.
It's weird, because I don't care about 80's fashion, I can take it, or leave it. But there's something about 80's cars that makes me annoyed by it.

The 90s for me. I like the smooth designs better than the funky designs, because the ones made before the 90s weird me out. They also look more like sci-fi vehicles disguised as alien UFOs to me, especially the ones made during the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s.

I know why. They were too boxy in appearance and most the car designs were boring.

They were kind of ugly too.

Those seem like the ugliest cars made in history. It makes me wonder why people loved them so much?

My father always said they were reliable, and easy to drive or operate.

I heard that there was a gas line shortage throughout the 80's which is the reason why a lot of the cars during that time (including the early 90's) were very short and ugly looking. Go look up the 1979 energy crisis on google. Never mind the fact the same year the first 80's cars were being released.

I think automatic cars were much better.  :P

There were two oil shortages during the 1970s. One that happened in 1973, and one that happened in 1979 during the Iranian Revolution. Both of them were surprising for America's economy at the time, although it makes me feel uncomfortable due to how the 70s feel weird to me. But if that's the reason why cars looked all boxy during the 80s, then I feel so sorry for all those people who had to witness cars looking like sci-fi pieces of crap.

The 2020s. I'm a huge fan of self-driving electric cars!

Real answer though is 1950s/early 1960s.

1960's.

In particular, I have always been especially fond of Chevrolet Impalas from that decade.

Definitely the 1950s. Believe it or not, it was this decade in which foreign autos started to invade the shores of America, but it wasn't yet the cheap Japanese imports that took off during the '60s/'70s, starting with Nissan (branded as Datsun until the mid-80s), then Toyota, then Honda. But given how much we take Mercedes and Volvos for granted, they were truly the great exotic cars of the time. It was also the decade with the best designs overall, and I like the richer color palette, including the two-toned models along with then-new optional features in nicer cars at the time that we also find standard, from power everything (steering, brakes, windows, and seats), to air conditioning, to seat belts.

Subaru is my favorite foreign car company, even though they were being more widespread during the 70s, 80s, and 90s in America.

My biggest problem with Subaru is that some of its cars have weak engines (3 or 4 cylinders) with slow acceleration but at least they give you good gas millage. I'm probably not looking deep enough into the company though.

Definitely the 50's & the 80's:

1950's:

The fifties had a grand aesthetic to the automobiles at the time. The cars were powerful and tough! They remain pretty iconic years later. My dream car from the 50's would be a 1955 Mercury Convertible in Black 8)

I know some of you aren't big fans of the 'boxy' look, but to me I always found it pretty bad ass! The cars were more rigged but they also had a sleek appeal to it as well! My dream car from the 80's would be a 1987 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 Convertible in Black 8)

The boxy look of the cars were probably to fit in with the boxy look of the shoulder pads, big hair, very 1980's things, etc, etc.

I like of how they have All Wheel Drive cars, which my family uses because you have all the wheels moving at once. This is useful for mountain rides, whenever it's snowy. It's not my all time favorite company, but I like it because I grew up with a Subaru Outback.

Subarus have always seemed to be very rugged and durable cars. I test drove a new WRX about 15 years ago and I loved it, but I also knew that I'd probably lose my driver's license pretty quick in a car like that.  ;D

Chrysler also had some cool looking cars in the late 50's.

This one is kind of forgotten,  but I've always thought that the Mitsubishi Starion/Chrysler Conquest was a cool-looking car.
